The objective of this research paper is to investigate modern day slavery, otherwise known as human trafficking. A look at why it has become a global phenomenon. Discussion is made of the different kinds of human trafficking. References are made to the effects on different cultures. Examination of the steps being taken by United States and other countries to put an end to human trafficking.

Human trafficking is nothing more than modern day slavery. Through cultural awareness, education, global initiatives, human trafficking can be eradicated. It has become an International epidemic. In 2007 Human trafficking generated more than 32 billion dollars, that was more than corporations such as Google, Nike, and Starbucks make combined ( Grillot, 2013). Human trafficking today is a huge business generating huge profits annually. “According to the International Labor Organization, an estimated $31.6 billion in profits was accumulated through exploitation, either sexually or through coerced labor in 2014” ( Miller, 2008, p.11 ). The profits are used for helping with criminal activities and even help fund terrorism. Awareness has increased in past decades. The sale of humans is nothing new as it dates back as far as ancient Egyptians. The victims are preyed upon by the traffickers looking for those who are young, poor and isolated from others such as homeless or addicts. They lure them by promising jobs and education. They are physically and emotionally abused. Some even tortured. They can suffer from malnutrition, alcohol and drug use, exposure to STD,s, such as HIV and unwanted pregnancies.
