How Far Are We From Human Trafficking? When watching a horror film we are submitted to the momentary feeling of tension and unrealism. Deep inside we know it’s not real and the movie will soon be over. “The Jammed” (2007), “Redlight” (2009), “The Whistleblower” (2010), “Not My Life” (2010), all have two things in common. The first, they are all based on true events of surviving victims of human trafficking; the second is they are films recommended by the (UN.GIFT) an international organization for human trafficking prevention and awareness. So when it comes to human trafficking what role are we each playing in real life? Operation Cross Country began in 2008 but was previously known as Innocence Lost which initiated in 2005; it’s an FBI …show more content…
There was a case in Laredo, Texas where a teen boy was under the investigation of Detective Roberto Garcia for the murder of Noe Flores. Rosalio Reta began his violent lifestyle at the age of 13 when he decided to drop out of school. He was hired by Miguel Treviño Morales, the leader of the Zeta drug cartel, at the age of 13. On their first meeting Reta and a friend were taken into a ranch where Treviño was executing three people by decapitating them. In this situation any person could be intimidated and accept the job for their sake of their own lives. Treviño took them to an unauthorized military camp where he gave his recruits high level military training and “practice” outside the field by killing random people for fun. Treviño was known to butter up the teens by rewarding them for their …show more content…
He told authorities they paid him $200 a week for his work. Notice that the younger the child the less the cartels have to pay. They take advantage of the minors because of their poverty level and their undeveloped minds. Remember when you were a kid and someone gave you $20 dollars you felt like the luckiest kid now visualize $200 a week that’s almost minimum wage here in the U.S. The boy stated participating in four decapitations while drugged and under threat. “It has been esteemed that 20,000 minors fill the ranks of Mexico’s organized crime gangs”, said International Business Times, while reporting the death of a 13 year old hitman the day after being released from jail. On the other hand Richard Fausset said “A few years ago, there was a study that estimated that 1 million children in this country are at risk of being recruited by the drug
Luis Garavito murdered 140+ children; but was charged with killing 172 children throughout 59 town in Colombia. Garavito lured young boys that were between the ages 8 and 13 that were poor and on the streets like himself. Garavito altered his attitude and often changed his wardrobe from a disabled person, to a priest, to a street vendor, to a bum, and then back to a disabled person to gain the trust of these young boys. He would also offer them money for small jobs or drugs and then he lead them into hidden areas with tall plants overshadowing the two. He would then tie them up, rape them, torture them, then slit their throats, and lastly dismember their bodies. Garavito had a wicked twisted fantasy of becoming involved with young boys, boys that was his preferred victim type and he needed to become intimately involved with these boys. So he binded them in a way that was apart of his sadistic fantasies. El Loco was someone who craved to feel Godly. Garavito started his killing spree in 1992; by 1994 citizens and law enforcement agencies were desperately searching for boys that disappeared. By 1998 naked decomposed corpses were being found all over Colombia. Colombia’s well known Anthropologist Walker and Facial Reconstructionist Mario Leonardo was called in to identify 114 skeletal
On October 17, 2015, Michael Santiago, a Chicago father, was jailed after his 6-year-old son accidentally shot his 3-year-old brother. While Santiago was at work, their grandfather, Israel LaSalle, was at their house watching them until Santiago arrived back. While the grandfather was upstairs, the boys were downstairs playing “cops and robbers” when all of a sudden the 6-year-old grabbed a gun that was on top of the refrigerator, wrapped in pajamas, and shot his younger brother, Eian, in the head. Immediately, LaSalle ran downstairs and rushed the boy to the hospital that was located across the street. However, in spite of the efforts, Eian’s wounds were too great and he died at the hospital. Michael Santiago, faces felony child endangerment charges. Police say that Santiago “confessed to purchasing the weapon illegally from a gang member. He told authorities he kept it for protection”.
This research is exploratory because the researchers attempt to point out social trends that play a role in becoming a human trafficking victim. It goes beyond the mere description of human trafficking its causes and effects, the information that the researcher provide might be able to prevent the crime. Or at very least, educate potential victims. This is pure research because the researchers want to expand the body of knowledge of human trafficking. There has been substantial research in regards to victims of human trafficking, this particular study lists a few previous research components.
To make this story even more heart-crushing this young man was merely slapped on the hand with a sentence of two years in physciatric juvenile detention facility. If tried as an adult, this young man would have received 20 to 35 years maximum sentence in a state penitentiary without bail. Maybe this sixteen year old should have gotten more than two years but he came out a man from the detention facility (Wadsworth 11). He matured and learned to be himself, not wht other people wanted him to be. Rehabilitation programs are one alternative that has proven successful and helpful (Age 61). An example of a success story was Trina Leas of Peoria, Illinois. Trina was only 13 years old when she brutally shot and killed her classmate in the middle of class. Trina subsequently attended a local camp for troubled youth called "Peoria's Camp Neighborhood" and was totally changed. Now Trina lives a life free of crime and works in Peoria to help counsel youth (Age 64). Another success story from Wichita, Kansas concerns an eleven-year-old boy named Iman Reed. Young Iman had been hanging out on the streets and was a prime target for a revenge shooting. Out of fear for her son's life, Iman's mother enrolled him in the "Big Brother Program." This program paired Iman with a big brother, and now five years later, he has all A's and B's and has his sights set on a law degree. Iman is no longer involved with any street activities and
Human trafficking is the modernized version of slavery that involves force, fraud, and/or a type of labor in a sexual act. The United States government defines it to be “In which a sex act is forced in which the person induced has not yet been attained eighteen years of age” (National Institute of Justice). Human trafficking is a threat to all nations and promotes breakdown of families and can support organized crime. Trafficking can occur everywhere. Human trafficking and human smuggling are related to one another, but different crimes. The difference between smuggling and trafficking is that smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border while trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person.
Although these kids are young, they are still murderers and still criminals. An example of this, Lionel Tate, he was “...twelve when he savagely beat to death a six-year-old girl” (Lundstrom 87). He was sentenced to life in prison after this crime, which was blamed on pro wrestling. What about Thomas A. Preciado, who “...was fourteen when he stabbed to death a minimart clerk” (Lundstrom 87)? He was also tried as an adult after committing this unnecessary crime. These crimes are gruesome and the kids are old enough to know better.
In some murder cases the offenders are underage but in other cases the offenders are really young. In one case the murders were 10 and 11 years old. The young boys names are Jessie Rankins (10) and Tykeece Johnson (11) when they abducted a 5 year old Eric Morse and took him to a building on the 14 floor and dangled him then dropped him. This all happened because the killers wanted the 5 year old to steal candy for them. They were Chicago’s youngest inmates and it was one of the most notorious murders in Chicago history.
I have decided to write about human trafficking it may also be known as teen trafficking. Human trafficking is also about organ harvesting and not just about sexual labor (Lehnardt). Trafficking is dangerous in every way.
Sex trafficking is a serious issue that many in the United States but also the world is not aware of the magnitude. There are thousands of victims of sex trafficking and there are some who are more likely to be victim than others. In this essay, I will show why sex, gender, race, sexual orientation, and economics increases ones' chances of being sex trafficked.
Imagine for a moment a place like no other. Imagine for a moment a place where peace, tranquility, and calm reign. Imagine a place where hurt, pain, suffering, strife, hatred, and envy are absent. Imagine a place filled with good. Imagine a place of beauty, of plenty, of wonder, and of serenity. Think of a place where the ills and burdens associated with the fallen nature of man do not exist. Wars are unheard of because the struggle for power and superiority does not exist. Murder, suicide, and abortion are unheard of because the value of created life is still respected. Homosexuality, adultery, polygamy, prostitution, and human sex trafficking are unheard of because the sexual element to human relationships was pure and intended to be enjoyed
When people think about human trafficking they think of what the victims go through, but not what they experience after surviving it. When a person gets a victim out of the human trafficking system, are put back out in the world and expect them to function normally, but what they experienced will catch up to them. The mental ailments of human trafficking are harder to adjust to than the physical ailments. They might be in fear of getting back into the system, they feel people might disown them and they think they might be kidnapped again.
