Human Trafficking Slavery

Human trafficking is the modernized version of slavery that involves force, fraud, and/or a type of labor in a sexual act. The United States government defines it to be “In which a sex act is forced in which the person induced has not yet been attained eighteen years of age” (National Institute of Justice). Human trafficking is a threat to all nations and promotes breakdown of families and can support organized crime. Trafficking can occur everywhere. Human trafficking and human smuggling are related to one another, but different crimes. The difference between smuggling and trafficking is that smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border while trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person.

Many people know the basics of what human trafficking is but what they don’t know is how often it occurs. People do not spend time thinking about how many people human trafficking affects or how to stop it. Human trafficking is an issue that is highly ignored. Many people believe that the selling of people into slavery is not a problem in America or not a big problem at all. The truth is that there are large amounts of human trafficking happening all over the world, even in the United States. People must be informed so society can begin to take action to stop the problem.

Normally upon hearing the term human trafficking, most people in America think, “That is something that happens in other countries, not here.” However, that is a very wrong assumption. The United States has multiple hubs throughout the country and so many citizens are unaware of the cruelty around them. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) “trafficking in Persons as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power” (par 2). Sexual exploitation is the most common form of human trafficking which commonly impacts children and women. The common ways that women or children become involved in sexual exploitation or sex trafficking are by a lies being told by a recruiter. Things such as a false marriage proposal which turns into a bondage situation, being sold into a sex industry by their husbands or even parents, or they be kidnapped by human traffickers. Someone times these traffickers are people you know such as someone you though was your friend, boyfriend or a neighbor. Forced labor is another form of human trafficking is forced labor which is less frequently discovered in comparison to sexual exploitation. Victims of forced labor often work in disclosed locations, such as mining camps, private houses, sweat shops, factories and basements. Due to this finding victims of forced labor become harder and less likely to be saved. These victims are drawn in with a promise to work and earn money. There are different kinds of human trafficking, there is sex trafficking, which forces people into different sexual practices in which they are an unwilling participant. Forced labor is a modern day form of slavery, forcing people to do things such as agricultural work, sweatshops, or even being a child soldier.
