Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall, How Does Odysseus Compare To Us All?
(A Reflective Essay) “You are what you love, not who loves you,” is a from the song Save Rock and Roll by the American band, Fall Out Boy, tying closely with the themes of life and humanity explored in The Odyssey. The main character, Odysseus is the truest expression of humanity, and the challenges that we all face in our lives. Learning in the end that he is formed by those he loves, Odysseus is able to overcome mountainous obstacles to find home and meaning. The Odyssey contains many similarities to the “journey of life,” comparable challenges and choices to one’s own life, and the perfectly imperfect gauge of humanity’s soul.

Odysseus represents what it means to be human. He is our question mark, our ellipses, the semicolon that means the story does not end yet. Audiences must realize that The Odyssey and Odysseus’ voyage is indicative of us as humanity. No matter where we are in our lives, we find pieces of ourselves and histories in Odysseus’ life. Students, scholars, and readers thousands of years later still read and analyze the emotions and the actions of Odysseus. His failures represent what we have failed, the people we have let down in our lives, the tragedies of war. His successes, however, are beacons that guide us forward in the mists of time-reminding us in blinding light that no matter who far we stray, humans have not given up and will continue onward into the great unknown, searching for home, making one wherever our boat lands.
