Humans Are Wiping Out the Marine Ecosystem Essay

Our ecosystem is in danger. Fish, corals, octopuses, turtles, and even whales are dying. One may ask why: humans. Humans are wiping out multiple ecosystems on a daily basis. If this atrocious rate of marine life genocide continues, the human race probably won’t be able to have fish on their dinner plates in approximately a hundred years. The water is murky, and life is fading away. Several factors act as a cause for this catastrophe. For example, the annihilation of marine organisms is kindled by pollution, overfishing, factory fishing, bottom trawling, global warming, and whaling. Albeit the migratory birds had not landed in the region, seagulls and numerous more marine creatures were tarred with oil. The spill continued to get worse and worse. On 14 December, the oil balls floated to Anmyeon-do, which ruined at least five beaches with lumps of tar. Though people believed that the oil belt would not reach Anmyeon-do, but difficult situations with unpredictable weather further spread the oil. By 15 December, the oil lumps also contaminated Boryong and Gunsan of the North Jeolla province as well. This tragic incident not only destroyed the marine life of South Korea, but also set back Korea’s social life and economy. Countless numbers of people were involved in cleaning up the tar. Volunteers, soldiers, people sent by the government, and residents of polluted regions. Because multitude of people had to partake in helping cleaning up, labor forces at work sites reduced. With labor forces reduced, there were less people to work and earn money which naturally decreased South Korea’s economy. Moreover, the fishers and sea farmers had lost their source of income as they could neither fish nor farm in the sea anymore due to the oil spill. Recently, another oil spill occurred in Yeosu, South Korea as a pipeline run by the GS Caltex Corp cracked.
