Humans have a lot of influence on the environment. Cutting down the trees, using up water, and polluting the air has been a common effect by humans. Not only do they hurt the environment, but also they hurt the animals they are living with too. The trash can end up in the oceans which harms the animals that live there. Marine debris can be characterised as any solid material that is disposed into the marine environment or Great Lakes (). Putting waste in the waters is sadly a common everyday thing. Marine debris can cause serious harm to the animals. They can cause rubbing, breaking, and smothering onto habitats in the water which are very critical to the animals living there(). The debris can also tangle up the poor dolphins, seabirds, …show more content…
Beachgoers, the ones that love to be in the sun, love to go into shores. Marine debris trashes the beaches everyday and can pose threats to the loving beachgoers that just want to have fun. Beachgoers can reduce this problem by throwing the trash away, and going out and volunteering to help minimize these wonderful sites. Beachgoers would not be themselves if they did not have the ocean. They can help protect their loving sea. Another very important stakeholder are fishers. Fishermen and women love the ocean to fish. There are a lot of generation on generation of fishermen. Marine debris can alter their fishing skills. The debris can get in the way of fishing. Also, the debris can kill the fishes off. The fishermen won’t be able to enjoy fishing because the fishes will already be dead. There are ways to stop this dangerous waste. One way we could stop it is cleanup the ocean areas. Join a volunteer group or even make your own volunteer and pick up the dangerous litter that floods the seas. You do not have to do an eight hour day, seven days of week kind of thing. You just need to volunteer for a couple of hours. If you have a lot of friends, family, and community helping you, you will be able to see a lot of differences throughout the weeks. It’s such a small act, but doing small thing will sooner or later lead into a big outcome. Another thing people could do is just educate citizens about the problem. Have teachers take a time out
When ever you go to the beach, do you ever think about what can happen to an animal and the water when you leave a wrapper in the sand or a plastic bottle in the water? If you think about it, even a small piece of plastic can harm a fish. The fish could mistake it for food. This could potentially kill the fish. There are other things that people d that pollutes the ocean. An oil spill from a boat can get fish sick (Doc.2). Also, solid waste, plastics, glass, and foam (OI). Marine life can get trapped in any of these items (OI). There are many things we can do to prevent this, like, reducing plastic waste in stream, improve solid waste management, and increase, capture, and reuse (Doc.1). These are just a few of the many things we could do to
Over the years many animals have been affected by the trash in the ocean. The trash can affect the animals by making animals eat and pick up plastic, by trapping animals in a net, and by cutting their wounds. The trash is causing animals to die, mainly from the plastic objects and from getting cut by trash or by getting stuck in the trash. Some animals mistake plastic for food. When the animals eat the plastic their organs can get ruptured. In addition to that, animals mistake plastic for food because the plastic smells like krill (a small fish that is found in the ocean, and a fish that is eaten by some animals). Another reason why animals die is because of ghost gear. Ghost gear is what people call fishing supplies that were thrown into
The greed and recklessness of humanity have impacted the ocean tremendously. Roughly over eight million tons of plastic waste dumped into the ocean on a yearly basis. Dumping eight million tons of waste is equivalent to having a U-Haul truck filled with plastic waste and other toxic waste Into the ocean every fourteen hundred and forty minutes of every day. Waste like foil balloons, silica gel packages, plastic bottles, and metals get trapped inside of marine wildlife, coral reefs, and upon the surface. When there is waste upon the surface like the silica gel packages that you find in a new Coach bag to help keep it fresh, end up getting scooped up by seagulls, pelicans, and other birds because they look like fish eggs. Birds choke on and
Society tends to blame the fisherman for the trash that turns into marine debris. They are wrong. According to the California Coastal Commission, “Only 20% of the items found in the ocean can be linked to ocean-based sources, like commercial fishing vessels, cargo fish or pleasure cruise ships. The remainder (80%) is due to land based sources like litter (from pedestrians, motorists, beaches visitor), industrial discharges (in the form of plastic pellets and powders), and garbage management.”. Fisherman and other trained workers in the oceans are not the only
If seabirds and marine life keep dying from eating cast-off garbage they will eventually become extinct. The dumping of toxic liquids in the ocean directly affects the marine life as they are considered hazardous and secondly, they raise the temperature of the ocean, known as thermal pollution, as the temperature of these liquids is quite high(causes and effects). Toxic liquids are not good for the water, humans and marine life. The temperature of the ocean is highly affected by carbon dioxide and climate changes, which impacts primarily the ecosystems and fish communities that live in the ocean(causes and effects). Too much carbon dioxide is a bad thing because too much can make the water warmer than it should be.
There are growing numbers of problems involving marine debris in the United States for the past few years. There have been excessive amounts of waste and dross that washed up to the West Coast from the 2011 Japanese Tsunami, as well as other places, in recent years. Even though voluntary groups and other organizations are trying to clean up the ocean, the debris keeps coming, as if it has an endless current of waste. People are frustrated of how much the ocean is being polluted; after months of cleanup services, by obtaining hundreds and thousands tons of garbage, the ocean is still contaminated with debris.
Marine pollution is deadly and dangerous toward our own health, marine life, and the entire ocean. Our health and oceans should be valued and we should not take it for granted so one of the ways to do that is stop the pollution. It will take effort from everyone to make a real change. Now this does not mean everyone has to go out and spend hours cleaning the beaches. It doesn't take much to just think green and throw away recycled items as much as possible. It will motivate people to know all the animals they are saving by not dumping their waste and having no debris lower the oxygen levels. This form of pollution does more damage to humans as well as marine life more than most think. The pollution is so deadly that it has the ability to hurt our drinking water and even the air we need to breath every day. So it’s up to humans to stand up, make the change, and teach our communities about the effects of marine pollution on humans life and health. Hopefully, in the future society and the world will learn from our mistakes and try to educate each other on the dangers of this pollution. So think, is it really worth it, next time you go to throw your trash in one of the world’s most beloved
Recently, oceanographers and ecologists discovered that about 70% of marine debris actually sinks to the bottom of the ocean. As a result, not recycling hurts the marine life as it leaves leftovers behind to rot. This is important because it affects the whole world we live in. Our mess our the result of our world.
Ocean trash is killing sea life. Theres about 5.25 trillion pieces of garbage is in the ocean. Thousands of seabirds, turtles, seals and other mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. Monk seals and pacific loggerhead turtles are among nearly 300 species that eat and get caught in plastic litter.
When I was young, I always think that most of trash gets burned or goes into landfills which are not healthy for our environment. Trash is not just a problem in the local places and on the side of the road; however, trash also gets thrown from islands into rivers or lakes that flow into oceans. Actually, most ocean trash comes from rivers or lakes. My biggest concern about ocean trash is that 80 percent of ocean trash is made of plastic. As you know, the average time for plastic to completely degrade is at least about 450 years. Some plastic can even take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. This is a huge problem for both humans and wildlife. Plastic and other junk can be very harmful to birds and other animals that live on the shore. Because
Solid material, typically waste, that has found its way into the marine environment is called marine debris. Marine debris is known to be the cause of many deaths and injuries of marine animals and birds, either because they become entangled in it or they mistake it for prey and consume it. Each year, a large amount of plastic debris enter the ocean from both land and sea activities. Plastic is generally non-biodegradable. However, plastic on the seafloor would take a much longer time to break down because of the lack of sunlight and cold water. Reducing plastic use is another way to display marine sustainability.
There are many ways to prevent ocean pollution. For starters we can gather up groups of volunteers and do beach cleanups. Taking part of beach cleanups is a good way to help make sure our beaches is clean and helping make sure our beaches do not get polluted. In the past 25 years, over 144,606,491 pounds of trash has been collected from beaches worldwide from Alaska to New Zealand. Beach-clean-ups is considered to be very important because throwing trash into beaches, and the oceans can be better known as
It is one thing for the information to be out there and another for people to act against this waste problem. My next and final step to this problem would be to get the local authorities’ attention such as the local mayor or governor that will pass laws that make it easier for the general public to dispose of waste. Most people do not dispose of their trash due to the inconvenience of putting in
We 're treating the oceans like a trash bin: around 80 percent of marine litter originates on land, and most of that is plastic. Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation. Scientists are investigating the long-term impacts of toxic pollutants absorbed, transported, and consumed by fish and other marine life, including the potential effects on human health.
People disrespect and pollute the ocean. They do this because they are either from underdeveloped countries, don't care, think because they litter a little bit it doesn't matter, they know about it and don't do anything about it, and sometimes causes for it are on accident, some of the damage to animals is from populated and developed countries. When people put animals in danger of pollution they tend to die down. The animals are at threat. Hopefully people can change their ways.
