I was quite a rambunctious child, always getting myself into precarious situations; whether it was climbing trees, playing with matches, or running with scissors. My actions did not reflect my parenting; my parents tried to teach me to be careful, unfortunately it took an unpleasant, but humorous experience to teach me that lesson. I was three years old at the time and that day I decided to run through the house like a superhero. I pulled an Atlanta Braves hat over my head for some odd reason and proceeded to start my mission. As I ran into the kitchen I felt something grab the corner of my mouth and it completely stopped my momentum. It just so happens that a few minutes before my run, my mother opened the kitchen cabinet and forgot to close
Waverly was going to tell Lindo of her and Rich’s engagement, but whenever she mentioned him, Lindo cut her off and began to talk about something else. Waverly was convinced that her mother did not have any good intentions, and that she never saw good in people. Due to this, she was afraid of what her mother will say when she would meet Rich. According to Waverly, she and Rich shared a “pure love”, which she was afraid her mother would poison. Waverly planned to go to Auntie Suyuan’s house with Rich for dinner, knowing that her mother would then invite the two over for dinner to her house, and this would give her mother a chance to get to know and warm up to Rich. However, when they went for dinner, Rich did everything incorrectly- he didn’t understand Chinese customs and made several mistakes that were seen as
One evening, my sister named Bella was trying to get a cup from the cabinet. She had to sit on the counter to reach it. In the process of getting down she caught her pants on the microwave. When she attempted to get down from the microwave, her feet couldn’t touch the ground. Trying to get her pants loose from the microwave, the microwave door came open. The microwave dish fell out and shattered when it hit the floor. She did finally get free and she was fine.
In the novel, Joy Luck Club, we see Waverly Jong and June Woo’s competitiveness when Waverly becomes a child chess prodigy and June struggles to master the piano. This rivalry reflects how success and worth are depicted in this novel. A mother’s success would be encouraging or coercing their child to master a particular hobby and to improve constantly. A daughter’s worth would be determined by the daughter’s talents, and whether or not the daughter brings a good reputation for the family. We can tell that Lindo Jong was very proud of her daughter Waverly Jong when she was a chess prodigy, competed in different cities, and would bring home a myriad of trophies. Because Lindo was so proud of Waverly, she would brag excessively about her and
The form of communication created by the television is not only a part of how our modern society communicates, but is has changed public discourse to the point that it has completely redefined it, argued Neil Postman in his convincing book Amusing Ourselves to Death. He viewed this as very harmful, and additionally so because our society is ignorant of it as they quickly becomes engulfed in its epistemology. When faced with the question about whether the television shapes or reflects culture, Postman pointed out that it is no longer applicable because "television has gradually become our culture" (79). What kind of culture is this? Postman warned that it is one in which we
The bond mothers and daughters share is unique, it’s connection that can only exist between mother and daughter. The article talks about how a mother and daughter don’t always get along the older the daughter gets, and the more independent the daughter becomes. This can relate to the story of the Chinese mothers and their daughters in The Joy Luck Club.
The story is, I had my hands full, and I had to go put something up downstairs. I somehow opened the gate with my foot, I went downstairs, put the items away, then I came back up to put some groceries up in the kitchen. Of course, with my forgettable and clumsy self, I forgot to close the gate back. My little brother fell down the stairs while I was busy putting away the last of the groceries.
We had a great plan, we decided to go explore the fourth room of the basement. Once inside we started climbing and playing with the elliptical. I looked over to the treadmill and said to jerry, “I’ve got a great idea. Why don’t we get on the treadmill with only our socks on and run as fast as the treadmill can go and then jump off.” Now jerry was only a year younger than me but he of course thought it was a great idea. So, we each took our shoes of and stood on the treadmill, the treadmill itself was relatively old and was so close to the wall. We stood there not thinking of the consequences of our actions, looked at one another and grinned a big grin. I turned the knob slowly, we started speed walking the running and running faster till we were panting, the knob was on fast burn the fastest setting on the treadmill. Jerry jumped off, me on the other hand tripped over my socks, I fell and the treadmill still on the fasts setting pushed me up against the wall my neck to the back of the treadmill and my legs bent over my head like a contortionist. I screamed and screamed. My cousin sat there in silence watching this horrid event unfold before him, all the color flushed from his body. I screamed and yelled at jerry to go get help as I attempted to reach for
Laughter is an essential human phenomenon. Smiling in response to pleasant physical conditions occurs in early development, usually in the first month of life. As a motor reflex, laughter is usually present by the time a child is 4 months old. By the age of eighteen months, a child smiles once every six minutes, and by four years of age, the rate increases to one smile every one and one-third minutes. The ratio of laughs to smiles increases from one laugh to every ten smiles as eighteen months to one every three smile at four years. The individual differences in the rate of both laughing and smiling become greater as the children grow older. (Stearns, 1972) The instinctual development of smiling and laughing occurs very
This is the story of how I did this terrible event. It was a cold December night and we were having a giant party with our very close neighbors and friends at my house. At the time I was six years old and was all for having fun and not thinking about safety. As the party went on the parents were watching college football, eating pizza, and having an amazing time. All of the neighbors children were over and we were all around the same age so we decided to play tag were all the
Happiness: a Human Disease -- An Examination of the Allegorical Theme of Existentialism in the Happy Man
Andreas asked me and Emily to jump with him but we quickly refused. As other children crawled up i carefully climbed to the edge making sure not to fall off. Andreas was still telling me to jump off with him. He started to sound frustrated and and angry but i just kept refusing because i had a bad feeling something bad would happen. Out of anger he pushed me off the monkey bars! I landed on one of the wooden planks holding in the sharp cold rocks all over the ground. I didn't scream but i did start
Over 350 million people suffer from depression worldwide. It’s Kind of a Funny Story, written by Ned Vizzini, is a realistic fiction novel about a high schooler named Craig Gilner who struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. This story was a great read and for multiple reasons. Vizzini does a great job of making Craig, the protagonist, a very interesting character, and the novel itself is very relatable to anyone who is/was a student. Craig has many intriguing qualities that are hard to ignore.
I remember one incredibly funny day from last year. It was the day I fell through the glass display case at school. Boy, I tell you that sucked so bad. I know for a fact I’ll never live it down. I’m known for being pretty accident prone so it was no surprise to people when they found out I was the one who had left the blood stain in the hallway.
My life has been a crazy roller coaster with many events that have affected my life all in different ways. There have been times where my life has been at its highest peak in the world then it falls down, right into a deep valley. From the time my lovable younger sister came into my life to when my grandpa had a near death experience, I have learned many valuable lessons through the rough times as well as the more happy times. When I was a young girl, my mom had always told me the same thing over and over again. I never really thought about how a few words would have a deep effect on me in a short amount of time.
Throughout life I have had many memorable events. The memorable times in my life vary from being the worst times in my life and some being the best, either way they have become milestones that will be remembered forever. The best day of my life was definitely the day that I received my drivers' license. This day is one of the most memorable because of the feelings I had when I received it, the opportunities that were opened up for me and the long lasting benefits that I received from it that still exist today.
