Unless the rate of population growth progresses more slowly and remains at pace with food production, the hunger epidemic will worsen. Some countries use overpopulation to their advantage. China is one such nation, but China is an anomaly because it has the resources and buying power to support the large numbers of citizens living there. Since 1980, China has been working to lower its birthrate, by requiring married couples to have no more than two children, if either parent is an only child. Otherwise, and with few exceptions, there is a one child per family policy in China, according to Xinhua. This type of policy is likely to be less successful in other, less economically stable countries, like Haiti, where class warfare, religion, and lack of education about wise reproductive practices abound. Don’t be surprised if leaders who are expected to act on this project do not move as swiftly as anticipated. However, action is required and must be taken by the countries that are most in need. The citizens need to take action to deal with the root causes of hunger and to correct them. We all must focus on a solution. Only when each of us realizes that we are responsible for the issues in our lives will we take control and make change happen for the better. Humans have a tendency to escape from their problems temporarily by ignoring them or distracting themselves. These behaviors do nothing to improve the situation. Instead, they often make the problem worse. The famine crisis was identified early in this book, along with proposed solutions.
