Hunger in North Carolina Children Most people in the United States today are unaware of the increasing numbers of child hunger throughout the country. Today, a staggering one in five kids struggle with hunger in our own country (Francisco 18). Not only does it affect their concentration and grades in school, but also their overall health. Over 1.02 billion people in the world are considered to be malnourished, and hunger and malnutrition is the leading cause of child deaths, which accounts for 6 million children each year (Nah and Chau). When most people think of children and families going hungry, they think that it is just a problem in other countries. It is estimated that one in four children, or twenty-five percent of all children in the state go hungry on a daily basis (“Hunger in North Carolina”). Not only is North Carolina ranked one of the top ten states with the hungriest children, it also has cities which are ranked nationwide for food shortage including Asheville, Greensboro, High Point, and Winston Salem (“Hunger in North Carolina”). Many of North Carolinians rely on food from food pantries, government assistance, soup kitchens, and many other independent organizations freely providing food. Receiving free or reduced school lunch is one of the first things hungry children receive. The NSLP (National School Lunch Program) makes it possible for children to receive breakfast and lunch every day by

This means that all eligible schools can participate and all children attending those schools can participate. Soup kitchens and food pantries are also important and mostly unfunded organizations that are helping to fight hunger. Food pantries are located throughout North Carolina and almost every county or town has one. Here, families can purchase foods at a discounted price or receive them for free. Most are set up just as a grocery store would be and have many different options for food. Almost all sites accept donations of money or food. The most common donated items are canned foods, such as soups and canned vegetables; and boxed sides such as mashed potatoes and macaroni, because most just need to have water added and can be easily fixed. Although there are thousands of food pantries, twenty-eight percent of clients get turned away because a shortage of food, which means many end up going hungry (“All About Hunger”). Soup kitchens also provide free meals to families and their children. Soup kitchens rely on citizens to volunteer to cook and serve food. Volunteers must buy and cook the meals with their own money and some money donated by the kitchen. Most kitchens serve foods with a lot of carbs to keep the children full longer since most only get one to two meals a day.
