A hurricane is a tropical storm that has winds of 74 miles per hour or more. The winds can sometimes reach up to 155 miles per hour. Hurricane Andrew was a category 5 that struck the Bahamas and Florida in Mid-August 1992, the most destructive hurricane to ever hit the state. *With wind speeds up to 175 mph, it left hundreds of people devastated. It was the most destructive hurricane of its time and sixth-costliest Atlantic hurricane racking up to an estimated *$26.5 billion in damage. (Rene Rodriguez)
Hurricane Andrew’s Path of Destruction:
Hurricane Andrew was born off the east coast of Africa in 1992 as a tropical depression. A tropical depression is an organized area of tropical low pressure in which sustained winds are 38mph or less. The hurricane formed from a tropical wave that crossed from the west coast of Africa to the Tropical North Atlantic Ocean with wind speeds of 35mph and a low pressure system of 1010mb. By the time it gets half way, it’s become a tropical storm which is a cyclone …show more content…

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speeds of at least 74mph and is accompanied by thunderstorms. For the hurricane to take place the ocean surface has to be 80 degrees, a sufficient amount of water vapor and a sufficient distance from the equator. This creates what we call, the Croiolis Effect.
When Hurricane Andrew hit the Eleutherea Island in the Bahamas, the wind speeds had reached well over 127mph and developed a low pressure system of 1,000mb. Extensive damage is done to the homes, complete roof failure, and even the largest trees have been knocked down.
Two days later, the massive storm hits the east coast of Florida. The wind speeds are now up to 144mph with low pressure system 930mb. The extensive damage done to Florida is one to shock. Homes were missing and trees were cleared from where they once stood. Flood damage is way beyond finished as the water is still coming in
