Hurricane Harvey, the category three hurricane was first discovered August 17, 2017, in the Atlantic Ocean. By August 25, it had reached land, causing heartache for many people and their families. In the United States in caused damage throughout the southwestern states, etc; Texas to Louisiana. Derrick Freeman, the mayor of Port Arthur, Tex. stated, “Our whole city is underwater.” Many people in this storm were injured, hurt, and killed. According to New York Times article, “At least 39 people have died, including a Houston police officer, a family trapped in a van beneath surging floodwater.” New York Times article also said that Houston was ‘built to flood’. Since this catastrophe has struck, a few positive things have happened such as volunteering
Three weeks ago, Houston experienced one of the largest and costliest natural disasters in American history. The storm impacted all, regardless of socioeconomic or immigration status. Thousands of people were under water and many became homeless. Harvey produced a record 49 inches of rain since it came ashore. It caused many unexpected destructions along with death of some people.
The New York Times writers explains all the events happening during Harvey’s next landfall in “Harvey Live Updates: Trump Heads to a Flooded Texas”. In case you’ve been living underneath a construction site for your whole life, Harvey made hard landfalls in Corpus Christi and Houston, TX along with other cities in Texas. With hundreds of thousands of people under evacuation orders, shelters in Houston filled to bursting with people who craved some news about the safety of their loved ones and the state of their homes. Parts of the Houston area set a record for rainfall from a single storm anywhere in the continental United States, with a top reading on Tuesday afternoon, since the storm began, of 51.88 inches. Jeffrey Lindner, a meteorologist for the Harris County Flood Control District, said 25 to 30 percent of Harris County's 1,800 square miles of land was flooded.
After Hurricane Harvey ravaged the coast of Texas, a countless number of families found themselves with nothing; their homes, which once housed cherished memories and treasured possessions, were left in ruins. Though my family and I were fortunate to have remained unaffected by the hurricane, many others in our city could not say the same. By the third day, the rapidly-intensifying storm had already devastated several neighborhoods.
Sitting out this year has been a roller coaster I was affected by Hurricane Harvey. During this past year, I also, began my employment with the Department of Homeland Security. I never would have imagine working for a federal agency. I worked in the mass care department and also Public Assistance as well. In my role with mass care I lead a team of 10 members together we provided assistance to over 1,000 Hurricane Harvey survivors. Looking fellow survivors in the eye and helping them rebuild their lives knowing that I too am a survivor of Hurricane Harvey helped me grow as a person. This experience gave me strength through the storm.
On August 17, 2017, a tropical storm/hurricane cyclone swept through southeast Houston, TX and southwest Louisiana destroying everything in its path. This category 4 large swirling storm known as Hurricane Harvey, is the costliest tropical storm on record in approximately 2 billion dollars of damage. It lasted until September 2, 2017, and showered 60 inches of rain, destroying and damaging 150,000 structures, and killing 82 people. With wind. upward of 130 miles per hours, some 30,000 people were left homeless to find shelter, food, and clothing. People's lives in an instant changed, schools were closed down, people were left with no work because businesses had closed or were destroyed. Some people were looting businesses and stealing from evacuated
Hurricane Harvey was the costliest tropical cyclone on record, a lot of things were destroyed, but Harvey, primarily from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area. The hurricane affected Texas, Louisiana, Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras, Eastern United States & more. Many people had to leave or move their family to a different location due to the hurricane. Hurricane Harvey did damage to things other than homes. This natural disaster was the first major hurricane to strike south texas since Celia in 1970.
Hurricane Harvey effected all of us. Whether you live in New York or downtown Houston, it hit us all. Hurricane Harvey was one of the few storms to strike American to the core. All of the country public support was very prevalent from the beginning. Food, clothing, water, money, and general happiness; Americans all over the world gave back to those who were effected by theses monstrous storms.
“Based on Irma’s projected path, which includes Florida’s heavily populated eastern coast, the enormous storm could create one of the largest mass evacuations in US history,” CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen said. Hurricane Irma is the most powerful storm to have been recorded, its wind has reached a speed of 185 mph and gusts at 225 mph. Families are having to evacuate their homes and go to a safe place to ensure their safety. We determine how severe a hurricane is by a category of one through five, Irma is at category 5! People's homes are being demolished and six people have been reported dead. Irma has caused 95% of the Caribbean island to be destroyed.
On August 25, 2017 around 11 P.M., businesses, houses, cars and trees were swallowed by flood waters. Debris started building up and copious amounts of water started to over flow the drainages causing dams, levees and bayous to exceed anything beyond their conceptual holdings. Areas that have never come close to flooding found themselves suddenly become "lakefront properties." The storm churned out water, lightning, and wind and went back over the gulf to start the cycle again. The destruction that Hurricane Harvey caused to my beautiful hometown Houston, Texas including a large portion of south Texas, wester Louisiana and other parts of the country has been extremely surreal. Watching the destruction of this beautiful city that I love dearly,
Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans, Louisiana on August 29th, 2005. The events that followed would leave the whole nation in shock until this day. One of the major topics of discussion after this disaster was whether or not the government's slow reaction time had anything to do with the fact that New Orleans is sixty-seven percent African American. As helicopters circled a wasteland that was once a major tourist attraction, the racism of the Deep South, thought to be extinct, proved it was only dormant. The same racism against African Americans that could be seen on Bourbon Street in the months prior to the hurricane reared its ugly head once more in Gretna, LA and was pointed out on live television by rapper Kanye West.
Hurricane Harvey left many people in despair. Houston is flooded and people have to stay on roofs and in boots. The mayor told the residents of Houston not to leave, which is wrong because lots of them could have died. The Federal emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a group that helps these natural causes. Donald Trump tweeted about going to Texas and visiting but he’s not doing anything about it. Hurricane Harvey has been the fiercest Hurricane after Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Harvey hit Texas on Friday night and it kept raining all weekend. On Saturday Hurricane Harvey weakened and the hurricane became a tropical storm.
There was a category 4 hurricane that hit towns such as Houston and Rockport Texas on friday of August 25, which went on through september 3, 2017. This is one of the worst hurricanes since 2005. This hurricane really affected people on the saturday. On the southwest of Houston a man named Jamie Ellie said he was watching a movie about 1:00am, when a tornado swept through and the doors flew open, he had to take refuge with his family in a bedroom closet. In some towns such as Houston rainfall was estimated to be about 50-60 inches, which is enough to cover signs on the road. When this hurricane swept through towns the roads were completely empty, people had to take shelter immediately. Even if people tried to escape the hurricane after
Hurricane Harvey started on August 25 of 2017, it lasted until September 2, 2017. Harvey was one of the strongest hurricane to hit the United States. The most affected area that Harvey hit was Houston, Texas. Janice Forse told the American-Statesman that “even Katrina wasn’t this bad.” Many people evacuated Houston, but the ones who stayed remained in shelters. A lot of the people left in homes or retirement homes had to be rescued by the National Guard or people on boats.
In the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels examines the class struggle. According to Marx and Engels, the Bourgeoisie are the middle class, the people who are self employed, who own the land, resources, factories and other means of production. The Proletariat are the people who do not own the means of production and work for people who own them. In order for it to succeed, the bourgeoisie must constantly revise and renew the means of production in order to ensure a constant infusion of capital by building larger cities, and securing cheaper commodities. The unfairness in class was shown through the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels and through Animal Farm by George Orwell. These two sources highlight the unfairness in class in which the oppressed fight against their oppressors. My argument in which power destroys both the individual and society because too much power corrupts an individual leading to his downfall and that of society.
The very first community service I had was in Theodore Payne Foundation. In 9th grade, my sister had a good opportunity to learn about this foundation at school. TPF is a non-profit organization that strives to preserve California native plants. Because our family all enjoyed planting and gardening, we decided to try volunteering there. We first thought we would only do plant/garden related jobs; however, we not only worked on weeding and planting, but also organized the shop or contributed in stapling and distributing the pamphlets. I am currently still volunteering there and I am exited to learn more about different types of native plants and skills in gardening.
