I agree with your statement: "The hygienist can become culturallycompetent by finding out information on the patients culture before they arrive to the appointment. The hygienist can learn about diverse cultures in populations that they are treating". Working as a dental assistant has allowed me to help dentists communicate with patients that only speaks Spanish. I have witnessed how hard it is for dentists to communicate with patients to discuss the treatment plan they need and why. If a provider cannot gather all the necessary information, then he/she wont be able to have the right diagnostic and will not have the best treatment plan for the patients. I know that it will be impossible to know all the languages and cultures of all the
Therefore, I will always keep in mind that those skills and behaviours are necessary to work together and communicate sensitively and efficiently with Indigenous patients. Ultimately this cultural awareness will lead me to provide better health care. This reading emphasises the importance of cultural awareness which improved my understanding and respect for other cultures. This understanding encouraged and influenced me to practice in a culturally sensitive way, which is safer way and in addition it creates responsiveness between professionals and
The field of cross-cultural care mainly focuses on the ability to communicate in an effective way so that proper health care is provided to patients with from diverse sociocultural backgrounds. Unfortunately, there is no empirical literature comparing the effectiveness of different models of cross-cultural care and communication. However, there is a strong empirical evidence which shows that educating health care clinicians in cross-culture care can significantly improve skills, knowledge and attitude. (9, 10)
The dental hygienist is expected to respect the diverse values, beliefs, and cultures present in individuals and communities. When providing dental hygiene care, dental hygienists must support the right of the individual to have access to the necessary information and provide opportunities for dialogue to allow the individual patient to make informed care decisions without coercion (ADHA Policy Manual, 2016.) It is important for the oral health care provider to focus on the needs of the patient versus their own needs or those of the practice. It is also important that every patient be treated with the upmost respect regardless of race, color, age, gender, ethnicity, social class, disability or oral conditions. The patient must also be respectful towards the provider and dental team and what they are doing to improve the patient’s oral health. This balance allows the patient and provider to both be
Having each employee participate in this activity will lead them to tolerate each other beliefs and lifestyle. In addition, it will hopefully lead them to build long-term friendships and making it more comfortable to work together. Furthermore, researching other’s cultural differences can help them come up with better solutions and building a stronger connection with patients outside their race. Also, it will help the employees strengthen their interpersonal skill in and outside of a workplace. In conclusion, the dental health professionals taking my plan into consideration for striving for diversity in the dental offices in Arkansas will improve dental care and could help alert other dentists outside of Arkansas to diversify their office too. Each dental office across the world should incorporate a cultural swap in their workplace so employees can learn about one another's
Cultural competency is a set of appropriate behaviours, attitudes and policies among professionals and enables them to work efficiently in cross-cultural situations (NCCC, 2006). A culturally competent health care system can eliminate cultural inequities, provide greater quality of care, and have less patient dissatisfaction and more positive health consequences. A conclusion reached in a study (Palafox et al., 2002) states, culture influences the outcome of medical examination and; therefore, it is vital to provide culturally competent health care services. Cultural competency is especially important in the context of radiographic examination due to the variety of culturally different patients a radiographer comes in contact. The following case study effectively highlights the impact of cultural competency.
Dentistry, in one form or another, helps abate feelings of hopelessness and accountability that occur during periods of confusion. Not only are they knowledgeable about specific nuances that accompany oral hygiene, but they are also very good communicators. During my interview with the interviewee continually stressed the importance of communication. Communication is imperative in many respects as individuals seek closure within the context of an uncertain world. As she indicated throughout the interview, dental hygienist helps to facilitate a healthy exchange of both concepts and notions to an already emotional individual. This is quite important as the dentist can
“Patient-centered care would allow for the dental hygienist to form a working relationship with his/her patients.” I think that is great that you think that because it seems like a lot of offices I know they have like a patient quota that they have to meet each day. Dental offices should not be like a drive through at a fast food place with just clean teeth then off you goes. Hygienists should be able to connect to their patients to have a better understanding about their dental health and overall health. We are proud to be hygienists because we can say that we help our patients one way or another to better their
As dental hygienists, we will see a variety of patients in our dental office. Each patient will present with a unique medical history. It is essential to know how to treat our patients to the best of our ability, so that they are comfortable and cared for throughout the entire treatment process. They might have a certain disability, disorder, or disease that may alter or affect how we treat them.
Hundreds of years ago, the dental profession and the medical profession was perceived as two separate entities, however, this bifurcated health system has created an epidemic in oral disease with our aging population (Nagro, 2016). Dentistry should be more closely integrated with medicine and the health care system, however, organized dentistry has fought to stay a monopoly. They have protested regarding dental personnel being independent, even in the advancement of serving more rural areas, just as they repelled being part of Medicare. Finally, there are a few states that have alternative choices for a dental hygienist to travel to people who can’t get to a traditional dental office. Some of these states include Minnesota, Colorado, Oregon,
Culture is defined as specific set of social, educational, religious, and professional behaviours, practices, or values that individuals learn and adhere to daily, including communication styles, customs, dress, cultural beliefs, and societal rules ( Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, 2012). With respect to such societies with different cultural backgrounds, it is very important for dental care providers to be aware, active, and ongoing about learning cultural competency level to be able to assists clients better and understand the etiology of a client’s dental hygiene diagnosis. It also plays an important role when it comes to explaining the desired planned dental hygiene intervention to a client. Dental hygienists must keep in mind the cultural beliefs that specific clients may have and thus, use it as an education tool when explaining the importance of any dental treatment to a client, that way the client will understand and accept the
Our practice manger want all of the hygienist to do prophy and have the patient to return on Monday because the all of the dentist will going to mandatory training (this training was schedule for two hours at the end of the workday). All the hygienists were in agreement that we can perform prophy on patient that already who happen comprehensive exam with in the year, not patient who need to be updated for exam. In this case all of our patients need needed comprehensive exam. Therefore, these patient needed to be rescheduled, all us will be in violation " Not being under general supervision and patient not getting an comprehensive exam until Monday." When we confronted her about why it was ethical. What make this so ridiculous she only care
1) Core values that were used by the dental hygienist, Brittany, were beneficence when, Brittany, performed the oral exam on, Mrs. Claren. Brittany, also, used veracity when she sat, Mrs.Claren upright in the chair to discuss her of the findings and the treatment plan.
This are great tips to have in mind when discussing whitening treatment with patients. As future dental hygienist we will be educating patients on the different options available today. Even though, whitening can still be completed if the patient suffer from gingivitis, I think is best to wait. as we learned the gingivae tissue is already inflamed and the chemicals used for whitening are very strong. Also, after the gums get better, there will be a diference in color since the part that was cover with the over grown gingivae was not
Cultural Competence When dealing with different cultures, and not necessarily different ethnicities or races, I as a pharmacy technician had to be sensitive to the work culture, that is, respecting the employees and their procedures in the different departments of the hospital. And so when I was checking expiration dates and location of medications, at the nursing stations, operating rooms, and the like I had to be to adhere to the existing order of things. If I had to speak to someone I had to use their language, for example, if I used different language with physicians than I did nurses, as to keep within the profession and not step on any toes. It seems, that hospitals, whether large or small each department has their own way, their own
In any case, providing competent care to a patient of a different culture must first start with an understanding of the culture itself (Potter & Perry, 2011). Culture is
