Hyperlipidemia affects nearly 30% of Americans (CDC, 2012). Hyperlipidemia may be better known as high cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty wax-like substance that is naturally produced in the body (NLM, 2013). People with high cholesterol may never even know they have the condition. But when they become aware, they have to make immediate changes in relation to adhering to specific diets, exercising regularly, and undergoing prescribed treatment or alternative therapies. Incorporating more fruits and vegetable in the diet, and less fried and processed foods should be one of the first steps taken after diagnosis. Exercising at least 3 days a week can serve as a fun and healthy way to reduce blood cholesterol levels. And taking natural …show more content…
This may be a difficult feat to undertake. More people are working longer hours, and it may seem as though there is never enough time to do everything that needs to be done. On top of this, there are ample fast food restaurants available with 24 hour supplies of food that may not be the best option for perfectly healthy individuals, let alone individuals with high cholesterol. Eating a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables; consuming fish, such as salmon; and increasing fiber intake can all help to lower cholesterol levels. Even drinking 1 to 2 glasses of red wine a night can serve to reduce cholesterol levels. People affected by high cholesterol have to be mindful of how much red meat they consume; they should limit the amount of eggs eaten, fried foods, and dairy products. Total cholesterol intake should be between 250 and 300 mg/day (heart.org, 2013). Eating processed and fast food only exacerbates hyperlipidemia, so making an effort to devise a diet plan and cook the necessary foods, would serve to decrease cholesterol levels. Increasing physical activity is also a necessity that can contribute to having good cholesterol levels. “Enjoy at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity more days than not for a total of at least 50 minutes per week” (heart.org, 2013). That equates to working out for about 45 minutes at least 3 days a week. Those individuals with high cholesterol need to walk, run, dance,
A decrease of candy bars for snack and changing it to eating fruits instead as the fiber from the fruit benefits to reduce LDL levels
“You're more likely to have high cholesterol that can lead to heart disease if you have any of these risk factors such as smoking, obesity, large waist circumference, poor diet, lack of exercise and diabetes.” (Mayo Clinic Staff)
Cholesterol is a compound chemical that contributes to coronary artery disease, which have a various risk factors which includes poor dieting, smoking, and a family medical history. This disease is very high risks, its one which runs in my family, and family history.
Dairy should not be a primary food group on the dietary guidelines set by the government because of its many negative effects on human health (given that people care about their health and the health of those around them). Dairy and other animal products are the only food sources which contain cholesterol. Arguments have been made saying that humans need to consume cholesterol in order to have a healthy balance of fats; these arguments fail to acknowledge that our bodies naturally produce all the cholesterol that it needs. And many studies have been conducted to support the theory that consumption of dietary cholesterol overloads arteries and can cause heart disease, artery disease, as well as sudden heart attacks. The Department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School worked to interpret an international study based on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. The overall conclusion was that “…dietary cholesterol levels are consistently related to CHD (coronary heart disease) mortality rates” (Stamler). A study conducted by Lena Ohlsson at the Laboratory of Gastroenterology and Nutrition within the prestigious Lund University in Sweden also linked dietary cholesterol and milk fat with artery disease and other metabolic disorders. In short, the abstract of her lab report said that low-density lipoprotein (LDL)—“bad” cholesterol—was found to be directly associated with coronary artery
Cholesterol is a lipid that helps manufacture vitamin D on the surface of the skin, produces hormones, maintains cell membranes, and possibly helps cell connections in the brain.3 Based on what is known about calcium transporting throughout the body we can infer that cholesterol also has a similar process. When there is an imbalance of cholesterol homeostasis we can have high density lipoprotein (HDL) which is known as good cholesterol, or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) which is known as bad cholesterol. Lipoproteins differ in size, shape, composition, function, and contribute to vascular
Hyperlipidemia is the abnormal elevation of any lipoproteins present in the blood. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) are commonly used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, specifically lowering the levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels. As with most classes of medications, there are many potential side effects. A less common but serious side effect of statins is myopathy. Myopathy is a dose-related side effect that causes skeletal muscle weakness, aching, cramping, pain, stiffness and tightness. The mechanism of this occurrence is unknown, but as will be shown, there is a possible correlation between low vitamin D levels and increased occurrence of statin induced myopathy. The vast numbers of patients on statins results in a high number of patients with statin-induced myopathy throughout the world. This consultation will determine whether vitamin D prophylaxis is safe and effective in the prevention of statin-induced myopathy.
While it is beneficial to acknowledge the connection between cholesterol and heart health, it is equally critical to take into account their general contexts and ponder the countless
The Wearer of the Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter affects the view and morales of all the main characters in the novel. The purpose is to show an “adulterer”, in this case, the letter is put on Hester. Hester may be the official wearer of the letter, but Pearl, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale all feel the effects of the evil emblem.
I come from a very large Mexican family where there is a lot of meat, cheeses, fried food, butter and of course always a lot of sweets. Due to this diet there are many health related concerns in my family, three being diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, although high cholesterol seems to be more of a genetic issue rather than a food related one. Even so, the diet we maintain does not help lower it. Due to this diet and genetics, I have very high cholesterol myself; my doctor even shocked me by saying that I could have a heart attack by the time I’m 25. This obviously scared me and I knew then that there needed to be a change in my diet.
There are many ways that have been proven to help in preventing cardiovascular diseases; certain exercises and foods in particular. The American Heart Association gives a breakdown, of what you and should be doing to help prevent heart disease, depending on your age. They clearly state, no matter what your age is, you should be eating a healthy diet; this includes, eating a diet low in sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat. Sodium is the salt added into your food. Foods high in sodium are chips, table salt, crackers, pickles, sauces, dressings, and canned foods. Saturated fat is a molecule that has no double bonds, which makes it “stackable” and is considered an unhealthy fat. Foods high in saturated fat are; fatty beef, poultry (with

One source of great mortality and morbidity in Europe and North America is the cardiovascular disease, Atherosclerosis. It is recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease of the intermediate and large arteries characterized by the thickening of the arterial wall and is the primary cause of coronary and cerebrovascular heart disease (Wilson, 2005). It accounts for 4.35 million deaths in Europe and 35% death in the UK each year. Mortality rate are generally higher in men than pre-menopausal woman. Past the menopause, a woman’s risk is similar to a man’s (George and Johnston, 2010). Clinical trials have confirmed that lipid accumulation, endothelial dysfunction, cell proliferation, inflammation matrix alteration and foam cell formation are
Earnest Hemingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” describes a couple - man and woman - held up at a train station in Spain. They begin to waste time on drinking beer and liquor in order to forgo the possible circumstances that has been placed upon them. The American tries his best to persuade the woman to have an abortion, but she is ambiguous about the challenges she might be faced with. Earnest minimizes his words throughout the story in order to exemplify a greater thought, called the Iceberg Theory. Earnest uses hills, landscapes, a white elephant, and the railway junction throughout the story to express the Iceberg Theory.
However, there are also different types of foods and drinks that can raise your LDL levels which are fatty meats such as beef or pork, poultry skin, butterfat such as whole milk, ice cream, cheese, and tropical oils like coconut and palm oils (Healthwise). Other foods such as junk food that contain high levels of saturated fat and trans fat can raise cholesterol levels, so it is very important to consume vegetables, food high in fiber, whole grains, and fruits. It is also very essential for an individual to exercise on a daily basis to help lower cholesterol
One of the reasons for this is that low-carb diets tend to get rid of excess water from the body. Because they lower insulin levels, the kidneys start shedding excess sodium, leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two.” Low-carb diets can actually lower blood sugar and insulin levels while helping to treat diabetes, Gunnars states, “by cutting carbohydrates, you remove the need for a lot of insulin. Both blood sugars and insulin go way down. The best way to lower blood sugar and insulin levels is to reduce carbohydrate consumption. This is also a very effective way to treat and possibly even reverse type II diabetes.” Another great health benefit to going on a low-carb diet is that it will also lower your blood pressure, which lowers your chances of getting a stroke or heart attack. “Low-carb diets are very effective at lowering blood triglycerides, which are fat molecules in the blood and a well known risk factor for heart disease,” says Gunnars, and this is because carb consumption elevates blood triglyceride levels. HDL and LDL are referred to the two types of cholesterol; HDL is considered good, and LDL bad. “HDL carries cholesterol away from the body and to the liver, where it can be reused or excreted. One of the best ways to increase HDL levels is to eat fat… and low-carb diets include a lot of fat,” says Gunnars. So by increasing the
