Once you have the client seated, you should sit next to the client without a barrier in between you both. Ideally at about a 45 degree angle from the client. This is so the client’s rest gaze is not on you so they only look at you when they choose to. You should adopt an open posture. No crossed arms or legs as this can be construed as defensive. You should lean in slightly to the client as you listen to what they have to say although not too far. You don’t want to make them uncomfortable. You should use encouraging responses where appropriate. For example nodding or smiling. Be very wary though of judging your client as this may show on your facial expression as the client speaks. You should also have your phone off or on silent and ask the client to do the same. You do not want to have any distractions or at least, try and keep them to a minimum. Showing the client sympathy can be disadvantageous as showing the client pity and sympathy distracts us from actually dealing with the actual feelings involved in the situation and trying to resolve the issue or at the very least working towards a solution.
