She nodded, and smiled at him softly.
“Until next time,” she said, and dipped her head.
“Until next time,” he smiled, and bowed low to place a kiss on the back of her knuckles.
True to his word, Alexei became a regular visitor to Anya’s home. He was often there for dinner and all manner of other occasions. For one, Anya was happy with the development. She was suspicious, at first, that he fully intended to abandon her after their tryst. He proved, however, to be quite a gentleman.
Anya was also surprised that they were not physically involved, as she thought he would want. Aside from that single encounter, Alexei seemed intent upon maintaining the bounds of propriety, and the most they touched was for her to take his arm. They often

“What are your thoughts on marriage?” she asked him one day as they wandered through the gardens.
“What about it?” he asked, glancing over at her with raised brow.
“Do you think you’ll ever marry?” Anya asked, and she tried hard to keep her heart from beating too hard.
Alexei looked over at her, his eyes pensive and contemplative.
“I do not think I am made for marriage. What a question,” he finally laughed lightly. “Why ever do you ask it?”
“No reason, I suppose,” Anya shrugged as they walked along, feeling her heart sink. “I intend to marry.”
“Do you?” he said, and his voice was flat with obvious distaste.
“I have little choice,” Anya sighed. “I must bear my own children and manage my own household. A man may choose not to marry a woman if he pleases. But for a woman that is not so honorable.”
“And why not?” Alexei said, and suddenly stopped to face her.
“I’m not sure,” Anya blinked, suddenly flustered.
“The laws of society cannot dictate matters of the heart,” he said, a fire in his blue eyes. “Good day, mademoiselle.”
And with that, he left her in the garden alone.
The encounter had been bewildering and distressing to Anya, and she still didn’t know where they stood in their relationship with one another.
While this was distressing for Anya, it seemed to be a source of entertainment for her mother and Olga, and they mused aloud that it would only be a short matter of time before he finally asked her, and they would be wed.
“You can’t just stay here forever,”
she desperately tried to keep him close, but society prevented it. With Robert, she slowly began
"I realize the post mentioning the possibility of you becoming the next bride was facetious, but since I'm here I see no reason why you and I can't get to know each other better. Are you close to your parents?" she asked.
Why do you suppose they kept their love a secret? Does this sort of behavior fit his character as he has been described so far?
“It wasn’t to make a political statement or start a fight. We were in love and we wanted to be married.”
“Yeah, but you need to make sure that you’re ready no matter what,” Kara replied.
agreed, but the shiver in her voice told me she wished to escape the awkwardness of openly
“What are you saying?” I ask already knowing the answer. She already has tears forming in the corner of her eyes , “I’m saying that maybe we should call off the wedding for now. Just until you have everything sorted out and everything goes back to normal.”
‘No,’ she said. ‘That’s it. It’s already stopped.’ ‘Well, what-’ Her face was lowered a little, still, like they do in all her dealings with a man so he don’t ever know just where the lightning will strike next. ‘You are not married, are you?’
She might have known—Harry was always matchmaking, and he’d seemed particularly upset at the recent chilling in this relationship.
“My friend, no. I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement. Luchesi-“
“Sorry, but I'd rather marry Padraig. He’s a farmer, so I don't have to worry about his head getting ripped off in battle,” she said with a nonchalant shrug. “So… sorry?”
The two talked for hours and hours on. They had conversations about growing up, their past, their future plans, etc. He dreaded the question he was about to ask her for it would lead to her tragic death.
She was still licking her wounds when she met Evan. While a good distraction from her broken heart, she never saw him as long term. For starters they weren’t compatible in bed; something that’s incredibly important to her. To be just, it wasn’t going to be a fair fight for any man going up against Alex. Well, except maybe for Evan’s father, Leo.
“But doesn't it sound amazing? Don't you want to find the one person you were made to spend forever with? Your other half?”
"How was the wedding?" Slaine asks, instead, even though he isn't sure he wants to know.
