In 2006, a dreamy, wide eyed woman launched her own vintage Etsy shop- NastyGal Vintage. Sophia Amoruso, 22 at the time, began “one-woman merchandising.” Amoruso singlehandedly found vintage clothes, scouted models, styled and photographed photoshoots, edited photos, and ran the online shop (Elle.) She viewed the world as a place of opportunity, with each job as a stepping stone to something bigger and better. Sophia Amoruso is a self-made woman, and refers to herself as a “Girl Boss.” When asked what a “Girl Boss” was in an interview with Elle Magazine, Amoruso stated: “A Girl Boss is someone who has big dreams and is willing to work hard for them. So being a Girl Boss is really about being the boss of your own life. You don 't have to be the boss of anyone else to be a Girl Boss. So it 's about keeping personal responsibility for your future, being comfortable taking risks, and understanding that failure is the byproduct of your own invention. If you 're learning from everything that you 're doing, even if the outcome is not what you had anticipated or expected, you 're learning. If you 're learning from everything that you 're doing, you 're winning. I think a lot of people might be afraid of taking risks in their life because they 're afraid of failure. Failure is just not learning from everything that happens (Elle).” Sophia is a prime example of the modern day working woman. She is a strong, wise, independent woman, and has created an example of success for young women
