“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The dreaded question we are asked countless times throughout our early life. Through my years, I never exactly knew what career I would choose. I always knew medicine greatly interested me, but I was not completely certain what field best suited me. It was not until my second year of college that I came across the PA profession and saw firsthand what these medical professionals do. This realization replaced my mindset from what I want to do, to what I want to be. I strive to be an advocate for patients, and a medical professional that provides exceptional care to those in need. I have a strong desire to obtain more knowledge and improve the lives of those around me with the skills obtained through a PA program. In 2012, I went through an experience that really opened my eyes and pulled me even more into the opportunities offered in the PA profession. My grandmother was diagnosed with kidney cancer, and my grandfather was diagnosed with end stage lung disease. My grandmother underwent a Nephrectomy for Renal Cell Carcinoma. Though the procedure was successful, she contracted a resistant strain of C. dificile colitis and chronic urinary tract infections from the hospital exposure. She has seen countless doctors and PAs while trying to resolve the constant back and forth of her infections.
