I knew when I first signed up for this class that I would have both write a lengthy research paper, and do extensive research. I felt confident that I could deliver in writing a well thought out and research paper. With that said, this class has given me new skills in terms of the writing process of a research paper, and also in what it means to be a conscious writer. While I admit I still need to improve in my editing process, I fell that this class helped me notice some of my flaws for which I plan to improve upon. Building off of WRD 103, I felt that in this term my grammar had improved. While I still made mistakes in grammar, I felt that in this quarter I faired much better than in the original WRD 103 class. For example, in my multisource exploratory essay I notice that for the most part my grammar was on point. I can attribute this to the timeliness in which I completed that paper. Similarly to what I notice in my WRD 103 class, the cohesiveness and grammar of my papers always improve when I have enough time to write my papers. Through this class and the quarter I also notice that the most important step in my writing process is the organizational part. Formulating my ideas on paper better before I actually start typing better prepares me for my writing. Another important aspect I picked up on was the analysis on my own work. Usually when I thought of analysis I always think of how I analyze someone else’s work, but I found that analyzing my own work, such as I did
I have written more in the past year in this course than I probably wrote throughout high school career. This class made me notice that prewriting really does make a difference in the end result as well as having a peer critique your paper. Instead of writing a quick paper and just handing it in, I was actually forced to take the time out to write a rough draft, read my own work out loud, and revise my work. It helped me make my writing more organized and have a better flow throughout my paper In the future, I will continue to use this method as well as visit the many resource we have on campus that can give feedback what can make my paper better or just checking for grammar errors, spell check, and sentence fragments.
I feel as though I have really grown as a writer because of this class. Before taking W131, I always had a hard time trying to put my thoughts down on paper in a way that made sense. No matter how many times I would rewrite my past papers I never seemed to be able to convey my thoughts and beliefs accurately. This course really has taught me the importance of prewriting and revising. Before, I would simple sit down and stare at a blank computer screen and just kind of start typing and what I ended up with was extremely unorganized and hard to follow. Now that I have found a way to prewrite that works for me, I feel as though my writing has really improved and become more organized.
Putting all the parts of writing together is what makes a good piece of writing. Over the semester, my realization of what I was doing wrong paired with the different formatting strategies and the desire to become a better writer has helped me to become better overall. I believe that practice makes perfect, and while I have not perfected my writing or even come close yet, I believe that I have gotten closer to being a proficient writer. I believe that this class has helped me to get closer to becoming a proficient writer, and will help me in my future classes and
Writing 205 has taught me more then just writing stratagies, it has taught me who I am as a writer. Throughout the course of the semester I have learned new strategies, techniques, and tools that have helped me develop as a writer, as well as establishing my voice. Through vigorous course work I can say that I am more educated on writing skills in addition to annotating sources and genres. Reflecting back on this past semester I see how each unit has branched from each other as a guide for what was to come next. This made going from unit to unit flow in a natural way to achieve the best final product.
I have been a San Jose State University student for 4 years now, and over the course of my learning I have grown and learned more than I thought possible. I came to SJSU knowing that English was my least favorite subject; I consistently dreaded writing assignments professors would assign in class. Going through English 1B has taught me to face my fears about writing papers, whether they are short reviews or extensive research papers, I have become more comfortable in writing. I have learned how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things I don’t know. Most importantly I have learned that revision is essential.
Over the past four months, I have made great strides as a writer. The area where I have seen the most growth is in my use of the writing process. Prior to my enrollment in this course, I would sit down and write all my papers in one sitting. This class has taught me how to lay out a plan for my papers. I have learned how to effectively brainstorm/research, draft, and revise my writings before I complete them. Also I have learned to not just stop there, instead I am now going back and reflecting on my work after I complete it. This allows me to identify where I prospered and also where my downfalls may have been. With this information, I am able to apply this to future writings of mine; lessons that will stay with me forever.
I have attended WRA 110 almost four months and I appreciate that I have a deeper and further impression about American college writing. Since I am an international student, honestly, I am not good at writing at all, I have to spend more time on fixing some grammar problems in writing, especially, analyzing article. Sometimes I even very struggle with how to write it clear for readers, but after I accepted advice from professors and peer review, I have improved my writing skills and learnt a lot from the class.
I have always had a trouble in writing and after taking this GSW course I feel much more confident in my writing abilities and have learned many skills that I will always be able to use in my writing. I feel that over the course of this writing class that I have learned a lot of useful information and have grown as a writer. I have learned many skills that have improved my writing from the sources I use to the styles I write into using visuals in my papers. I have also improved my writing process. I go through many more steps to make sure my writing is to its best. I use more than just myself in my writing process I use others to help me and give me feedback on how I can improve even more on my writing. I have made a huge change in my writing
I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.
The process I used when writing previously changed during the first few weeks of this class. Already I have altered the way I write my drafts, and the way I read other people’s work. Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” made me come to the realization that one draft isn’t always the best approach. Therefore, I took multiple steps in examining my draft and critiquing it accordingly. Additionally, I started brainstorming topics, and this led me to create a roadmap for the list of destinations and topics I wanted to touch on and the message I wanted the reader to take away. This is just the beginning of the year and I already have a sense that as I progress through the semester my work will be continually get better.
At the end of this course, I feel that a lot has improved with my writing. When I first started this course, I was struggling with a lot of writing mechanisms. One of the things was transition. I was just writing without thinking of how to connect my thoughts. After completing numerous writing assignments, I am fully confident with my ability to have a paper that flows. Another thing that I struggled with was organization. Although I still have a lot of improvement to make, I think this aspect of my writing has improved. One of the things that helped me immensely was creating an outline before writing my paper. Another aspect of my writing that also improved has to do with run-on sentences. I see a lot of changes in my writing and writing run-on
I have learned and improved many skills during my time in GSW 1110. Before I took this class I was very unconfident in my academic writing abilities; however, I have greatly improved them during this last semester. I have learned how to gather and organize credible information; write to audiences with opposing viewpoints; identify the audience I am writing to and cater my writing toward them; draft texts using personalized strategies; use grammar, punctuation, and mechanics to make my writing more interesting; and think critically to synthesize multiple points of view. I believe the skills I have learned and refined will allow me to move on to further college writing classes, as well as help me for the rest of my life at work and in the community.
I feel that the biggest change to my writing this semester is in the way I organize myself for assignments. I was homeschooled and did all my assignments online. Making the change to a classroom environment was difficult for me due to my Asperger’s and learning about how to organize all aspects of my writing has been a challenge. I feel that I have improved as the semester progressed. I would like to discuss each aspect of the writing process and how my skills have improved by taking this class. I will be able to use the organizational process in my future career as a film maker and director.
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
Going through the material that we have read so far, I have connected with a lot that has been said. Thinking back on my own life experiences, it didn’t dawn on me until after reading or watching a film that I have experiences that fall under many of these concepts. Some that I have connected to the most is onlyness, micro-aggression, and model minority myth.
