The protagonist shows unbelievable strength in perseverance during his journey. Typically in this archetype, the “Last Man” is striving to discover something that may bring mankind back. For Robert Neville, this is not the case. In the novel, I Am Legend Robert Neville is a failed “Last Man on Earth” archetype. He does not have the bravery to continue on throughout his conquest and continuously proves himself to be weak.
All Neville has is himself. If he wants to keep living he has to work hard to keep his home up. He struggles with the motivation but yet he still perseveres. His will to live is often almost non-existent but nonetheless he gets up early and does his daily maintenance routine. He knows that it would be so easy to just give up but he doesn’t and the question is why?
Everyone encounters obstacles in life that they feel like they can't overcome. People that have 'resilience' can take these challenges head on, stay calm in any situation, and use their problem-solving skills to take advantage of the situation and get themselves out of it. In a section of "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, a biography of war hero Louie Zamperini, Zamperini is adrift at sea after his bomber crashed in the ocean. He is left with just the remains of the plane and two others, Phil and Mac. Louie Zamperini's key characteristics of resilience and the differences between all three men allow them to overcome adversity, and Louie and Phil make it out alive.
For some people the strong word resilience can impact one’s life in a significant way. Overall, resiliency is having the ability to still enjoy and continue your life with positive, good times, regardless of a hard past or bad experience. It can be shown in various ways throughout a text, including the setting, the plot, and characterization. This is how the texts, The Other Wes Moore, The Art of Resilience, and The Third and Final Continent share their common theme. This theme the three texts convey is that resiliency is vital for a positive as well as successful life.
Resilience is the power or the ability to return to the original form. “Resilience is born by grounding yourself in your own loveliness, hitting notes you thought were way out of your range” (94). Father Gregory Boyle says this because he knows that resilience is needed in order to change. Resilience is important because we can become better people by doing things, we thought we couldn’t do. In the book, Tattoos on the Heart, The Power of Boundless Compassion, by Father Gregory Boyle, resilience is essential in our lives because it is the key to do better.
They all knew they were safe to escape after this. However, none of them, not even Rainsford, wanted to leave. They talked together
Neville has created a restricted space that fights and defends to keep it for himself. He is an alone white man who tries to survive in an apocalyptic world in which he must learn to adapt himself by controlling the environment surrounding him imposing his authority and establishing his dominance. It is vampire what he must confront and upon whom he must establish his control, they metaphorically are the black population. Neville estimates his own state of humanity against the contaminated monsters with blood as the factor that indicates the difference between the identities of both beings. Neville takes his own blood as the standard to identify what is pure and as a consequence what is human. At some point in the novel, he finds Ruth, a woman of whom he thinks to be a normal human because she can walk in daylight. Although he finally achieves to take her into his house he still does not trust her, being afraid of the fact that Ruth could be infected by the bacillus. After such belief, Neville insists on testing her, first by shoving a plate with crushed garlic on it under her nose, and later by asking her for a sample of blood.
The memoir The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, takes the reader on her life journey as a child and how her family represents resilience. But, what exactly does it mean to be resilient? Resilience is the capability of a person to bounce back from a hard time, to get back on their feet after stumbling, to understand that there is no end and you can always become better. This essay will model the explanation of resilience in my words, the explanation of resilience from both what was seen in the memoir and Elizabeth Edwards, and how these three tie together to model the same title; resilience.
Even in the hardest of times, it is in the human nature to find different ways to triumph. The human spirit is strong enough to triumph anytime. There are three vital things that the human spirit uses to survive. For example; During the Holocaust and during World War Two, there were a few amount of people whose spirit triumphed during these terrible happening. The biggest question now is; How does the spirit triumph?
Resilience is the ability to overcome struggles. In the book Night, Elie Wiesel is put into a concentration camp during the Holocaust. During his time there, Elie would not have been able to be so resilient without his father by his side. In Boys in The Boat, Joe Rantz would also have struggled to overcome his struggles without his dad. However, without Joe’s father treating him so badly throughout his childhood Joe might not have been so motivated to prove to his father that he was strong. In both books, Joe and Elie both demonstrate resilience by using their family to overcome their struggles.

This summer I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it was amazing. I really loved every page of Jeannette Wall’s novel, and it just seemed to get better and better as I kept reading. Wall’s novel is recognized as “a remarkable memoir of redemption and resilience.” But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn’t really truly comprehend what resilience was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. In this paper I will find my own definition of resilience, which’ll not only help me finish a summer assignment but also help me to fully understand resilience.
Resilience is defined as the quality that allows people to be knocked down and come back stronger than ever. Resilience is demonstrated throughout the novel Defending Jacob by William Landay, and the ancillary texts “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and “The Third and Final Continent” by Jhumpa Lahiri though different literary devices. The similar conflicts of Defending Jacob and “Third and Final Continent” help develop a theme of resilience throughout the stories. Another literary device that helps to show this theme in Defending Jacob and “If” is point of view. Finally, the theme is displayed once more in the novel and “Third and Final Continent” through the use of characterization. The theme of keeping one’s head through troubled times and not giving up is developed through the use of conflict, point of view, and characterization in Defending Jacob, “If”, and “The Third and Final Continent”.
Everyone experiences adversity. Challenges that everyday people experience can potentially shape, improve, or destroy one's sense of self and personality. Through all these hardships and seemingly impenetrable obstacles, the most pertinent component of one's ability to overcome can only be shown in actions taken despite the odds. People have one of two options; to let those obstacles overwhelm them and keep them from pursuing all that they were destined to accomplish, or to march forward, fight harder and push past the seemingly impossible circumstances to become greater than they ever expected to be, but until they take the step that enables them to be successful -- they are stranded. All of our actions, mistakes, successes, and behaviors shape our person and what we can or cannot become, but what will always matter is our individual decisions and actions not those of the people around us because at the end of the day, we are the ones who have to deal with ourselves.
One of the most important traits for my education and my life is resilience. The ability to make a mistake and come back from it quickly. This is one of the most important and basic skills I have learned in life. It however is not a skill everyone has learned, some people are adults and still aren’t resilient, tossing their life away over menial things. In today'sthis day inand age this this is more clear than ever, people can’t take insults, can’t take small infractions on their beliefs, and most of all aren’t ready for the reality of life.
