Pittacus Lore’s novel title, I Am Number Four, is appropriate for the storyline because it represents the main character. Smith is one of the nine alien children from the planet Lorien that escaped to Earth after his planet was destroyed by the Mogadorians, a villainous race whose mission is to kill every last surviving Loric. Before the children fled Lorien with their Cêpans (guardians), the planet’s elders placed a charm on them, which forced the Mogadorians to have to kill the remaining Loric children in order of their numbers. John is the fourth alien child. With the first three children already killed, he is the next target. John is always on the run, as he is trying to stay hidden and off of the Mogadorians’ radar. This is one of the main conflicts and themes in the novel because John is …show more content…
One of his main struggles is staying invisible. John knows that he cannot draw attention to himself and that he needs to act normal. He yearns for the chance to have a normal life, make friends, and to stay in one place. However, he is being hunted by the Mogadorians and in order to stay alive he has to constantly move and change his identity. When John and his Cêpan, Henri, move to Paradise, Ohio, John ends up making a friend (Sam Goode), an enemy and later ally (Mark James), and getting a girlfriend (Sarah Hart). Nevertheless, because of his new found relationships in Paradise, John unintentionally leads the Mogadorians to him. Another conflict is that John’s legacies (powers) have not presented themselves yet. This really worries Henri because as the Mogadorians get closer and closer to finding their location John does not have a way to defend himself. Luckily, John’s legacies do show up at instrumental moments in the novel. His powers include enhanced speed, endurance and strength, lumen (which allows him to produce light and fire with his hands), telekinesis, and the ability to talk to
John's life seemed to be one major drama after another; he didn't have a good male role model as a kid, and it seems he never was able to get on track. What was amazing about his life was the number of problems that he seemed to get into and how he wriggled out of them (with the help of a friendly person who just happened to meet him) only to run into more problems.
Lastly, John gains a reputation of being a sorcerer by others through means of manipulation. As a child, John's father often teased him about his "fat" and he was hurt by it. His childhood was difficult because he was very antisocial and always stood in front of his mirror perfecting his magic tricks. Anthony Carbo states, " show me a politician, I'll show you an unhappy childhood. Same for magicians" (O'Brien 29). John is both a magician and politician
John's character development begins when he is first shown to be very distrustful of people he thinks are
John Wilson settling in his new job with new people at a new place. John is liked by everyone in Blaine Lake, which would later catch the eye of Jesse Paterson. What is wrong with society? And what can people do about it? Society is plagued by hate, discrimination, and selfishness but it can be overcome by love, cooperation, and applying the concept of mind over matter. These questions and answers are provided by the ‘’I AM’’ documentary, where the director Tom Shadyac asked different religious leaders, authors, and historians to find solutions. Through the whole documental he uses these positive qualities of human beings as the three key themes as a cure to an unscrupulous society and to show humans have the power to change the world and make the planet a better place. The three key themes that seem to resonate throughout the documentary are the nature of humanity, the world’s ever-growing addiction to materialism, and human connections.
“Why should I play games? I’m on the edge of panic half the time.” says Adam Farmer in the novel I am the cheese written by Robert Cormier. This novel has many characters but there is one in particular, who is the main character. A boy name Paul Delmonte also known as Adam Farmer. This essay will begin by describing Paul and his personalities, and then explain why he is important to the theme.
Negative radio messages were sent out over the airwaves created and created turmoil fueling the already angry mindset of the KKK. They packed their things and started towards the town Rosewood with a revenge full mindset to take action in demolishing the town at any penalty. The group heated, overwhelmed, and full of angry. They went through the woods behind the Taylor’s home looking for a rapist. Suspicion soon fell on Jesse Hunter, a black man who had apparently just escaped from a dangerous street gang, but no proof of that so called escape was ever
John basically tells Virgil to stay out of his way so that he can go after Virgil’s mom Maggie – as he engages in a conversation with virgil “You see, I knew your grandmother way, way, way before you were born…That was the last time I felt good. I want that feeling again. I’m hoping it runs in the family, if you know what I mean” (Drew Hayden Taylor 115). John’s determination to impress Maggie led him to steal ancient bones from a museum and burry them in a newly acquired piece of land as he tells Maggie “you told me you didn't want anything done with the land… [I buried] human bones there… [now] no one will want to build there, not even your own people.” (Drew Hayden Taylor 313). This directly relates to John being a perfect trickster, as he devious enough to get into the museum, and out with ancient bones. John also is definitely willing and capable to throw arms when it comes to proving how much someone means to him. As John aggravates a situation by saying “Good morning Virgil. And who is your friend?... Let me guess Maggie's fabled weird brother. Dwane” (Drew Hayden Taylor 292). John, the arrogant man that he is starts a fight with Virgil’s Uncle Wayne. After some time of combat, it was showtime for Maggie’s press-conference. John emerged out of the fight with a broken rib but could not miss this event as he did want to see the outcome of his elaborate plan he carried out for Maggie. John, despite the pain he was in from the fight, made it to maggie’s conference just in time to rescue her from the enraged crowd. He is
In the story, you can see that john is passive men that try’s to avoid conflicts in any way possible. There was when john lied to the stranger and also his boss about what the stranger wanted so that it wouldn’t make Mr. Berry upset. Also, when John agrees with Mr. Barry about his son broke his plants knowing that it wasn’t actually his son and that some white bully threw it up there, but instead went along with it to avoid conflict. John is trying to protect his love one and those around him which makes him passive.
To start off with, John travelled into a forbidden area and he started seeing much more then he was supposed to see and that is when he started losing fear. In the story it states, “The north and the west and the south are good hunting ground, but it is forbidden to go east. It is forbidden to go to any of the Dead Places except to search for metal […] These are the rules and the laws; they are well made. It is forbidden
The Sacred Realm is a theme of art that involves the concept of aspects that cannot be seen but can only be brought to existence through faith by viewing a piece of art work. This faith is usually in form of a sacred realm. It’s vital to understand that this theme cannot be viewed by the naked eye. For instance, the religious images in the visual art are employed to bring about the opinions and beliefs of the individuals who are in faith of the specific religion and this is reached by provision of abstract ideas with images thru the work of art. Therefore, the Sacred Realm theme of art explains in a virtual way the reason and purpose behind the existence of certain aspects of nature such as religion
The major development seen in John’s character takes place near the end of the story, as he seeks a more pure life in a remote location. John feels as though he’s been poisoned by this new civilization “I ate civilization. It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then, I ate my own wickedness.” (241). He wants to not only live a noble life, but to make this life on his own, so chooses an abandoned lighthouse, far enough away from the disaster of a community he views Brave New World as a negative place with negative ideas. This is a major change from the identity he showed before being poisoned by this civilization, but once again he stays true to his values by leading this new life on his own. John’s strong moral values prove to be the one constant in his character.
In the film, “We are Marshall”, there is a major theme that includes being able to move on and a rebuilding of a community after a tragic event. In the following paragraphs I will be discussing with a chain of events how football helped rebuild a community after a tragic event and how religion and sport are intertwined. This paper is significant because within a short span it highlights different aspects of not only rebuilding a football team but a community. This paper is important because it shows how the concept of structural functionalism played a big part in this film in addition to the socialization of youth and adults in the community. This paper will also talk about major points and scenes from the film that have a connection with the
Although John fell victim to Don Hector’s betrayal, he still felt the need to explain himself. He wanted the happiness he felt when he joined the ranch to last longer. John wanted to mend the patch with Don Hector and meet Alejandra again. However, when he arrived at the ranch,Don Hector and Alejandra already left. Instead, he found Senora Alfonsa, Alejandra’s great-aunt. Senora Alfonsa bailed the boys out of prison “because of Alejandra [and in return] she wont see [him] again”. Although Alejandra helped persuade her aunt to bail the boys out of prison, her decision created false hope for John. John believed that his old life would return to him once he left prison. But he showed up to the ranch to find everyone left him. He could no longer rely on anyone, which twisted the many knives that people left in his body. Everyone around John betrayed and hurt John to the point that he became numb to the
Based on the Play ‘Trifles’ written by Susan Glaspell, the literary element that I would like to suggest is theme. Theme is used to convey the main idea of a story, novel, play or drama to create a better understanding of the readers about the story. In the Play ‘Trifles’, the themes that I found aregender differences and oppression of women.
