Hanging With Hair Saginaw County Science Fair 2009 5th Grade Connor Blue Abstract The purpose of this project was to find out if there is a difference in the strength of different types of hair. I wanted to see if color or chemicals made a difference. My hypothesis was that blonde hair was stronger than brown hair and chemically treated hair. Individual strands of hair were collected from 30 female subjects. I tied one end to a hair hanging device and the other to a baggie. I added pennies into the bag until the strands broke, which is how I determined their strength. My testing showed that brown hair was the strongest and held an average of 27.9 pennies. Methodology My experiment was conducted using the following steps: 1) Gather 10 strands each of brown, chemically treated and blonde hair from female subjects. 2) Cut all strands to a length of 6 inches. 3) Make a hair hanging device out of tinker toys. See Figure 1: Hair-Hanging Device. 4) Tie one end of the hair strand to the hanging device. 5) Punch a hole in the top of a snack size Ziploc bag. 6) Tie the other strand to the Ziploc bag. 7) Add pennies dated 1982 to present into the Ziploc bag until the hair strand breaks. 8) Count the pennies and record the number. 9) Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 with every hair strand. For each individual strand, the number of pennies was recorded, so I obtained an average number of pennies for each hair color. Each penny weighs 0.09 ounces. I multiplied the number of pennies times 0.09. This gave me the weight each type of hair could support.
