I anticipate backwards design will be successful because it allows me to analyze the standards and match our materials to them. It will allow me to have a scope and sequence that will outline the content that will be taught in every lesson and it allow me to expose the students to different activities to meet the different standards. By using backwards curriculum design I will keep the standards in mind when designing assessments and planning lessons and will not expose the students to unnecessary material that is not relevant for first grade. This design has strengths that make ideal for this setting. It allows teachers to keep the goals in mind when teaching and assessing students. This helps students achieve their academic goals and teachers
In all three of these artifacts, I have developed relevant, integrative, challenging, and exploratory units of study. The “Preserving the Past” unit incorporates all four core subjects as well as a service learning opportunity. My interdisciplinary unit on geography connects Language Arts with Social Studies with visual art mixed in, and the Greek mythology ELA unit was taught in conjunction with a Social Studies class (1). The Civil War unit and NC geography unit I have created incorporate Common Core standards as well as NC Essential standards. Lesson plans and assessments in all of these units were created using backwards design in which I started by looking at the standards and objectives students would be expected to reach and based my assessment based on those objectives (2,10).
Have certain interrogatories popped in your head repeatedly? How do we know if someone hears us beyond the grave? Can they determine if I died of natural causes or did someone cut my life thread short? Never really thought about it have you? Well, if you did or not the answer is yes people!!! There are people who are adamant about understanding what caused our life to take a quick or long turn to the big paradise in the sky or the land of milk and honey as most people heard and proffered. They are the superheroes, advocates for the dead, Forensic Pathologist is the name. They hold the most important jobs in the world, because like I said before they are insistant with knowing what or whom triggered your expiration date? Ha just a little humor for my comedy readers, yes you may have heard or be familiar of this occupation on Law and Order, Law and Order Criminal Intent, Law and Order SVU, CSI, etc.
Although not a new idea, the deliberate use of backward design for planning curriculum units and courses results in more clearly defined goals, more appropriate assessments, more tightly aligned lessons, and more purposeful teaching.
When curriculum are designed, planed daily activities follow. Curriculum designed by the interest of the children and go through steps. Include philosophies of education, theories, standards, principles values, research, and views on how children learn best. Usually contained different domains that children develop through the activities. Socio emotional, intellectual. Then, goals and objective are written and say how this goals will be recognize. A plan is coming for outside and inside environment, the activist have to be planned to be out or in the classroom.
An intеgratеd curriculum is a way to tеach studеnts that attеmpts to brеak down thе standard way of tеaching bеtwееn subjеcts and makе lеarning morе mеaningful and еnjoyablе to studеnts. Thе curriculum is intеgratеd so that childrеn 's lеarning in all corе subjеct arеas occurs primarily through projеcts and lеarning cеntеrs that tеachеrs plan and that rеflеct childrеn 's intеrеsts and idеas. Tеachеrs instruct childrеn 's participation in projеcts and еnhancе thе lеarning еxpеriеncе by using childrеn 's idеas, rеsponding to thеir quеstions, еngaging thеm in convеrsation, and challеnging thеir thinking. Standard based educational services for our societies students has transformed through the years. The establishment of the National Governor’s Association set of common core standards (CCS) has gained widespread attention according to Allman and Lewis (556). Within this shift, general education teachers and teachers of students with disabilities are being held more accountable for their student’s growth and knowledge. These standards have been adopted and implemented throughout our nation in order for our youth to be better prepared for higher learning once they
All that being said, the students are in desperate need of a curriculum that can be individualized and that will keep them motivated. Implementing this program will require both the other teacher and I to be credible in our knowledge base beforehand. From there, we will start the new curriculum from the beginning of the school year and lay out clear expectations for the students. Some bumps in the road should be expected, but persistence is key. Constant reflection, however, is of the utmost importance. In order to make sure that the curriculum is effective both teachers will need to reflect on each and every lesson so that they can constantly be improving. Pre, formal, and summative assessments will also be utilized in evaluating the program.
The Stanford curriculum’s structured program of study coincides with my specific learning styles and interests as a medical student. As a kinesthetic and social learner, the “flipped classroom” approach will allow me to dissect the material on my own and then exchange ideas and questions with members of a small group. Together we can challenge our understanding of concepts and ensure a solid foundation to our medical careers. Additionally, the scholarly concentration provides an invaluable opportunity to customize my education towards my interest in working with underserved populations. The Community Health foundation will enable a better understanding of the many determinants of health that affect the lives of my future patients every day.
The learning design has an array of unique supports. The variables include, but are not just limited to: teachers, assistant principals, cafeteria workers, counselors, and parents. You, along with these integral features, must prepare students to successfully graduate from high school and from college. Therefore, you must ensure they leave their high school with a burning interest to pursue higher education, and a compelling urge to become productive citizens.
Horizontal and vertical alignment are the main ways by which the change can be effected. However, the change in curriculum and instruction is often such a controversial task. School leaders have often found it to be challenging, especially with regards to creating a balance of the needs, appropriate assessment, desires, and the instruction. In this era where reforms in the education sector are standard-based, educators are required to set content standards that will ensure an improvement in the students’
‘High quality’ learning outcomes should result from the interplay between student’s learning efforts, the curricula, and the teaching methods used (Leonard and Penick, 2000) Curriculum design is an overwhelming endeavor. Never the less it is necessary in order to be an effective teacher. An effective teacher must be diligent in the creation of her units and lessons. Diligence as we create learning units will ensure student achievement at all times. Students’ readiness, interests, and learning profile most be at the center of any lesson set up. This should drive a teacher’s curriculum design. During this session, I have evolved in many aspects of teaching. Also, I have been able to pin point certain areas that need to be address.
By using the Backward Design approach, my assessment practices have also been positively affected. Now that I know exactly how I am assessing my students before I teach a unit, I am able to address misunderstandings in advance and provide students with rubrics and assessment materials before they start a project or assignment, so they know exactly what is expected of them. I have found that students perform better and are more engaged when they know my expectations in advance. I have also discovered that students are more conscientious about their grade or performance when they are able to look at my assessment tool and ask questions or check off the tasks they have completed.
Prompt: Discuss the impact of Curricula on their intended beneficiaries as described in the readings of Jean Anyon and John Taylor Gatto.
The Curriculum is part of epistemological access. Epistemological access is the assess to school and to the resources within the school. These include the content. The curriculum is a guide or a plan which high lights the topics and the time line on grade to grade. It states what needs to be covered in a grade and how time should be spent on each topic.
Today, the Japanese university entrance test is becoming difficult and the system is changing too. Many examination candidates have to study a lot and therefore the amount of time needed for preparation of the test becomes inevitably longer. If so, we must spend the time as wisely as possible to pass the test. Currently, our school does have lessons of the subjects that we may use in the entrance test, but the lesson is not really for the test. In the test, what we get asked is the basic knowledge. Thus the amount of the knowledge you have is very important. What our school does in the lesson is make students think a lot. I do believe that thinking is important, nevertheless, I think high school students have to study for the test. TGUISS should change its curriculum and I say this because for one, to prepare fully for the entrance test, two, to have basic education and three, to make the status of the school even better.
