“I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past.” These offbeat yet abiding words have always struck a chord of fervor within me each time I read them. Once said by the honorable Patrick Henry Jr., and under a different context at this time in history, this quote can render an abundance of meanings if given the proper circumstances; which is why, in my opinion, it will remain everlasting to me. Experience is what guides many of us. It is what allows us to develop into the individuals we seek to become. Not too long ago, I was a student at an esteemed college of my choosing. As ecstatic as I was in receiving my new- found freedom of entering into adulthood, I unfortunately, after a few years of school and due to some very personal circumstances, decided to suspend my studies momentarily and to take a break from school. I do not regret the decision, for regret will hinder you from providing those experiences that will shape you to progress into a better person. Instead, I embrace them. Those experiences have “guided” me to be more formidable and wiser as an individual, and through those experiences, I feel blessed, honored, and fit to retry to continue my education at your venerated institution: The University of Washington in Seattle.
