Midterm Assignment
In 2002, I left my native country Costa Rica. I left everyone and everything that once matter to me. When I first arrive to Canada to my mother’s house, I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know what was coming. The language and culture were not the same; everything was so new to me. I had to adapt, the lifestyle was rapidly and noisy. Back in my native country everything was so different, it was a little town, where I could walk to school or ride my bicycle and my mother wouldn’t have to worry. Toronto was a big city, but on top of being bigger than my hometown it was cold and the days were shorter. It was 2004 when my mother decided that United States seems like a better alternative to live, and once again I was leaving everything behind.
At 18 years old, I was receiving my high school diploma from Brien McMahon in Norwalk, CT. A mixed of emotions was going through my mind, I didn’t know if I was able to go to College or not, I never looked into it because I wasn’t sure, I never liked School, but I did know one thing and that was I wanted to help those who were in need. I have learned through my years that values, beliefs and ethics can have a profound effect on the decisions people make on a daily basis.
Even though I never enjoyed moving from country to country I enjoyed the many cultures and beliefs from every country. All my life I’ve been doing what is right, I try not to overstep any boundaries that will lead to trouble. I learned that through
High school graduation marks the start of young adults’ lives, a time where they are expected to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Many young adults are pressured into attending college, whether they have determined their goal or not, but is it necessary? “The Case Against College,” an article written by Linda Lee, a mother who has questioned the former belief that college equals success, claims that “not everyone needs a higher education.” College, though beneficial to many, is not for everyone and should not determine an individual’s life.
When I graduated high school I had no idea what I wanted to do, all I knew is I was done with public school and could live my life as what I thought an adult was. My father and most of my family believed it was important for me to go to college, and get a kick start with my life. Though they weren’t wrong, I had no idea what I wanted to do and no discipline to do my studies to the full extent of my abilities.
It was my very first time to leave my native land, to migrate to a new country. All I thought about was, that I moving to a better place with a much more superior system. When I first set my foot in this country, I was amazed by the beauty and how developed the U.S. was. I was literally living my dream, and sometimes it seemed impossible to believe, I was living in the most powerful country. Although, I was living my dream until I had to start
From a very early age, I always assumed it was a part of my future to pursue an education. The American educational system engraves the importance of school at a very young age. Elementary school children are motivated through rewards when they try their hardest to reach their goals. Students are exposed to statistics and facts outlining the consequences of not getting a college degree as soon as they reach middle school. High school counselors and staff make it their priority to ensure that students apply to college. Students are conditioned to believe that education is the building block to a successful future. My cultural upbringing did not support my choice to pursue an education, however, I refused to conform to my family’s behavioral expectations because certain norms must be challenged due to progressive time periods and conflicting values.
Costa Rica is a very beautiful and unique place. It was my first time going there and I loved it! It was much different than the United States in ways I didn’t mind or even enjoyed. We saw many things and went many places while we were down there. I am ready to go back again already and do new, exciting things. However, we did a lot while we were down there.
Each house-- painted a very vibrant, dazzling color, purple, orange, yellow, green, and pink. I had never seen houses like that in the United States the usual house colors are gray, white, tan, blue, very dull colors. The sight of these vivid houses was just a small glimpse of this beautiful country. As I nervously traveled without my family for the first time the lush terrain of Costa Rica dotted with colorful houses welcomed me.

I was born on November 22nd of 1999 in Beruwala, Sri Lanka into a wonderful family. When I was seven years old, my home was destroyed by the tsunami and my family got the chance to move to Canada. When I heard the word Canada for the first time, only three words came to my mind; snow, cold and igloo. Later I learned that there was much more to this country. Before coming to Canada, I was really happy as I waved goodbye to my grandparents, my relatives, and my homeland. Unfortunately, I did not realize that it would be the last time that I would see all of them. Since arriving in Canada, I have attended a French elementary school in Montreal named Barthelemy- Vimont from grade two to four. As my parents wanted me to know both bilingual languages, we moved
When someone says, “Canada”, people might envision freedom, igloos, beaver, snow,or maple syrup, but to me, Canada is home. The warm colours of the maple tree in autumn, the rapid water sparkling under the sun, and the buzz of multicultural cities make up the sense of familiarity and feeling of home. From the amount of resources, to major breakthroughs and the multicultural population, the world’s second largest country is full of wonders and opportunities.

When I moved to Canada, it was a great experience to meet with new people of different cultures and countries. After the few days of my arrival, I came to know very bad things and experience many bad things that happened to me. For instance, I have to make many adjustments after coming here. Firstly, in India I never do a job, even I don’t work at home like cooking and other stuff. Moreover, in India high-grade school students doesn’t do any job. But in Canada, I experience so many jobs and I learn how people survive in these countries because people are very hardworking and nice. Secondly, the climate of Canada gives me a very bad experience and I don’t want to face this winter again. I have to wear more than three layers of clothes to protect
In my last essay the place I chose was Costa Rica located in Central America. Costa Rica is known for its wonderful landscape, fiery culture and trades with other countries. Although a little difficult but not impossible but I researched about how American music globalized into Costa Rica. The era I wanted to discuss was the 90s which ranged from 1990 through 1999. The 90s era in America is well known for its bubble gum pop teen music such as Britney Spears, boy band N*Sync, powerful Christina Aguilera. Additionally R&B soul music was another aspect of this era with soulful groups such as Destiny Childs, LSG, and 112. On the rise along with R&B was Hip-Hop. It also was the era of the grunge metal that was on the rise. However, in Costa Rica is known for different types of music but mainly marimba, calypso, Costa Rican folk music and rock music. The last one mostly amongst the urban youth who are interested in American music Rock music known for usage of guitars, drums and
As these assignments continue I seem to come at a crossroad to find legitimate information about television in Costa Rica. Yet I was able to find some type of information and hope that what has been discovered is credible. What I learned was that Costa Rica has free press and a large television following. Television has become Costa Rica focuses on original programming, dubbed American programs and international shows that have gotten a strong following. Costa Rica has various channels and their first ever channel was Canal 7 (Telecita) which was created in 1958.
Canada is one of the best multiculturation countries in the world. As one of the immergain of this big family, I am more than proud to say that I came from China to Canada three years ago because of my family. Within three years, I accept any challenge that the god gave to me: studying new language, learning new cultures, meeting new friends and fitting in the new society I got. I had experiences that I have to change myself in order to fit in this society, and I succeed with that. Therefore, what made me different than other elses is my ability to adapt new environment or a position very quick even though it means to change perceptive in some way.
