In today’s society what does an average person like to do for fun? Let’s go around asking many people form the age of 10-25 and see what their answer may be, It will more likely be something along the lines of “watching television” or “hanging out with my friends” but when that one person says “I like to read for fun” Some people may find that weird or amusing, but in all reality reading is fun, it is something wonderful to do in our spare time. It takes our minds to a different place than your own. It is like escaping and pretending to be someone else for a couple of hours. As Neil Gaiman said in his lecture, “You get to feel things, visit places and worlds you would never otherwise know. You learn that everyone out there is a me, as well,
What do we do for entertainment? These days, we amuse ourselves with our cellphones, tablets or computers. Back in the 1840s, the people there didn’t have any of these electronic devices. Does that mean that there was no entertainment? The 1840s was a time of suspense and excitement. Slaves were still legal, but abolitionists all across the country were crying out to stop slavery. The Native Americans’ land were being taken away forcefully. If you wanted to talk to someone who lived far away, you couldn’t since this was even before the Pony Express. Disease was uncontrolled and seemed to be incurable and vituperative. To cure yourself of diseases, doctors put leeches on your face thinking that they would
Since 2013 when I started college, I have found a new hidden love. I love reading! I love how I’m able to pick up a book and just get lost in the reading. For that moment I don’t have a care in the world other than the material at hand. In my house I am constantly encouraging my children to read or be read to for at least thirty minutes a day. I would love them to experience a wide variety of genres, even if they sometimes disagree with a selection. Actually a majority of the time they end up enjoying the
In one study it is revealed that “literary readers are markedly more civically engaged than non readers… more likely to perform charity work, visit a museum, or attend a sporting event.” Gioia adds this study to her essay because she her audience to know that not reading doesn't just affect your job or work, it affects your daily
Larissa MacFarquhar’s essay titled,“Who Cares if Johnny Can’t Read?” , was published in the Slate magazine in 1997, rebuts the misconception that Americans in today’s society don’t read as much as people did in the past. MacFarquhar presented factual information to back up her claim that Americans do read and that they read more now than they ever did. In addition, people do not read classics as much as they read genre fiction and self-help in today’s society. MacFarquhar also stated that reading books is better than television. According to MacFarquhar, she believed that reading can stimulate emotions and allow people to participate unlike television. Later, she acknowledged that certain television can also stimulate emotions and allow people
In Kevin Clarke’s essay from Speaking of Reading, the greatest obstruction faced by Clarke in learning to read was his own negative mindset and way of looking at himself as a reader. When Clarke was young and had just commenced reading it was evident that he had struggles and even says himself “I was too afraid I wouldn't be able to understand another book” (4). Clarke saying this illustrates that he created his own negative way of thinking by fearing failure and not understanding something which is a major obstacle for him in learning to read. In addition to this, Clarke feels as if he doesn’t have what it takes to be a superior reader and goes on to say “I assumed I was wrong...I don’t trust myself to read it right”
People love to be entertained; they can't get enough of it. Ever wonder why actors and entertainers are some of the highest paid professions in the world? As Bradbury portrays in 451, people spend almost all of their waking hours in front
The Pleasure Of Reading To Impress Yourself written by Rebecca Mead in August 13, 2014 was intended for older people who shared a similar experience to her. She wrote the pleasure of reading to show other readers how reading can give people pleasures. Some of people’s pleasures she tells us is that people read for the entertainment, the feelings, and the challenges they get. Most of the time people read, either because they want to or because they have to which, is why commercial novelists don’t get paid too much attention from book reviewers.
That’s all we live for, isn’t it? For pleasure, for titillation?’” (Bradbury 59). Their society believes activities such as sports, watching television, etc. are vital in order for citizens to achieve happiness.
They read because they live in an often terrible world. They read because they believe, despite the callow protestations of certain adults, that books-especially the dark and dangerous ones-will save them” (Alexie). Readers use literature as an escape, they use it to get away from their life. Reading literature can distract the
Thirst for Facts When I was a child, it was already clear that my personality was remotely out of the mundane. Clearly shown by my reading habits, I showed interest in things most children I knew didn’t care for. The struggle I displayed was similar to how Richard Rodriguez describes his experience in his essay The Lonely, Good Company of Books. “In spite of my earnestness, I found reading a pleasurable activity.
In this paper, Gioia argues that there has been a major decline in reading among young adults. Additionally he argues that this issue affects not only literature and the arts, but all aspects of life. He creates this argument through the use of relevant facts and examples.
What do you think of when you hear the word entertainment? Do you ever wonder why it’s the way it is? Have you wondered what forces, ideas, and people have molded and shaped it over time? How does entertainment affect culture and a society? These are questions that might have many different answers of varying explanations and magnitudes. For centuries, people have looked to a multitude of different things to do as a way to escape their normal lives and to have fun. So then came various forms of entertainment. Although it may not seem so at first glance, taking a more critical look at the similarities that our society shares with the Brave New World’s society may yield some shocking discoveries.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places you’ll go,” says the famous author Dr. Seuss. In today’s culture though, many children spend great amounts of time staring at their personal devices or watching television. Children do not realize that reading provides a form of entertainment that proves not only educational but fun, too. Providing an exciting way to learn, books offer better entertainment than a movie, since books last longer than a movie because reading takes longer, as a result of this, they give more detail. Also, books grow the reader’s imagination because they allow the reader to envision the setting themselves. Whether through fairy tales, historical
Do you believe that being bored helps creativity? That is what the author of the article “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do” claims. However, I find that technology has sparked more creativity in the minds of people around the world. It has also made our generation more technologically advanced because people are starting to interact with technology at an early age. Creativity is also different in everyone. When you look at the app store on your iPhone and you see the thousands of apps different people have made that is creativity. Therefore I find that technology has actually allowed people to be more creative.
One of the benefits of popular culture is entertainment. First, people are entertained by attending public events. For example, people attend sporting events. For example, in action movies such as Mission Impossible there several Hollywood stunts that entertains the people who are watching the movie. Also, in mystery films the main goal is to keep people guessing on what is going to happen like in the movie cube. Next, entertainment benefits society through electronics. For example, people are entertained by downloading apps that allow them to listen to music, play games, and watch movies some examples of these examples of apps that people that are downloadable includes apps such as Candy Crush, Spotify, and Crackle. Furthermore, entertainment is a benefit to society because it relieves stress. For example, if a person isn’t having a great day they can click on a website similar to YouTube and watch funny video such as “ghetto chef” series by a YouTube channel called DashieXP. Also, stress is relieved by watching movies on a site such as Netflix, which features different types of categories such as tv shows, comedy, horror, and action.
