There are many different types and kinds of sports, but only one comes even close to being my favorite. All sports provide a variety of natural health benefits but one in my mind stands out as being neutralizing and peaceful. The sport to which I am referring is the simple, yet complex, the sport of golf! Golf… some would say it’s only called that because all the other swear words in the English language were taken. In my opinion this is the furthest from the truth. There is just so much about the sport that is overlooked. For instance, the fact that it’s slow and unrushed. Most people see this and misinterpret it for being a sport that is boring and lacks motivational charge. Being slow and unrushed allows you to properly challenge yourself and your ability to play the game well. Dating back to the B.C, small sports were created for people to have some sort of entertainment and a way to avoid the problems people were facing. These sports were then put into the greek olympics where people competed in different categories and their goals were to amuse the audience and showcase their skills. This is what inspired the concept of sports and since then sports have become one of the most talked about topics and continues to be used for strength and amusement. Doing sports was a way to face fears and overcome difficulties. In fact, sports were what got people through the most difficult times each country has battled. The whole purpose of a sport was to serve as a distraction from reality, but times have changed. Golf is a sport in which a player uses clubs to get a ball into a hole usually a great distance away. There are not many rules in golf except you can not touch the ball with your hands, unless you hit it out of bounds and are moving it into play. The only other time you can touch a ball is if you put a marker down on the ground to show where the ball was that you just picked up.
Although competitive sports can have many negative effects, one positive effect is that you learn many life skills by just doing one thing. The greatest memories I possess concerning family and friends center largely around the huge trees and rolling green hills of Springbrook Country Club. Looking back on my childhood, I most vividly remember the countless afternoons of spending time with my great aunt and uncle, learning the ways of golf and, unbeknownst to me at the time, allowing it to grow into a major part of my life. Some of these flashbacks occur while I drive up the long lane, through a tunnel of trees that manage to block out even the brightest sunlight, or during a round when I pause to appreciate the oak trees that greatly exceed my own age. I sit and remember the earliest lessons given to me by Gordy, my great uncle, learning more about life than golf technique.
