My agency and my supervisor
For my internship, I served under the Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh, PA. I served as the National Health Corps Member for the Women, Infants, and Children Program as their Care Coordinator for all nine offices. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition agency that targets pregnant and postpartum women and young children ages 5 and under who are at risk of malnutrition. My supervisor Annie Nagy along with my mentors in the office made sure I was able to receive all of the materials and resources I would need to have a complete and successful internship.
They allowed me to act independently, but with supervision on projects that were of very high importance. I mainly participated in community outreach events and also provided nutrition education for mothers and guardians. In addition to these activities, I was also designing the nutrition and breastfeeding-themed educational bulletin boards that were to be placed in all nine WIC offices. The internship provided many opportunities for me to grow and overall, the environment was supportive, informative, and professional.
Contributions to reach goals and objectives
Being labeled as the care coordinator for the WIC program really made me excited for this position and what it was offering. Participants of the WIC program reside in almost every city within the county, meaning that the people I will be interacting with can vary dramatically from person to person (in
While interning for Head Start they gave me the opportunity to spend time in the classroom and in the office. In the classroom, the teachers included me in any activities of the day to help me learn what it takes to serve underprivileged children. I learned how to interact with parents that were not content and also learned how to interact with the children.
I completed my internship at Saint Agnes Home, Inc (SAH) located in West Hartford Connecticut. I was assigned to single Teenage Mothers. The Saint Agnes is a non-profit program licensed group home run by the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families for pregnant and/or parenting adolescents and their babies. The mission of the Saint Agnes program is to provide residential care and support services to single pregnant and parenting teen mothers and their babies. The Saint Agnes Home program emphasis values, respects life, and recognizes the unique dignity and optimum potential of each person served. The program is staffed by licensed clinical social workers, registered nurse, and other college prepares professionals.
The process of finding an internship was very stressful for me. I honestly had no idea where to start or even what I was interested in. It took me many weeks to do research into different facilities that had internships available. After calling tons of organizations I finally interviewed at one that felt right for me. The interview took place with Laura Crain, who I also interviewed for this essay. The internship is at the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition.
Since starting, I have step-by-step integrated myself into various aspects of the clinic, although I admit that I still have a lot to learn. I plan on volunteering there long after this internship is over, so hopefully those things will eventually come. Volunteering there has illustrated the joy of healthcare that I have always imagined. Even if the private sector of healthcare is like Maliheh, as a doctor, I will make volunteer work a core tenet of my life. These experiences over my internship have helped contribute to that burning desire.
The main task of my internship was to gain more experience and knowledge of our respective field. Overall, the experience proved to be both enjoyable and rewarding. During this internship I used the skills that I learned from my Medical Assistant class and used them in the real world scenarios at the hospital. Also while I there I was exposed to new experiences. Such as performing Urine test on Drug and alcohol patients. For this procedure I had to stand in the restroom with the patient's and watch them urinate into a cup. I had to stand in the restroom with the patients because in the past they try and cheat the system. For example
Unit 304 - Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of Americans by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services. In addition, HHS is also responsible to provide better services to people by adapting to new technologies to keep pace with the advancement in technology. As we compare the health and human services from last ten years to present, it is very clear to analyze how health and human systems have improved over the years. The Department manages programs that cover a vast spectrum of activities that impact health, public health, and human services outcomes throughout the life span.
Specifically, I was able to apply many of the concepts and skills that were discussed within the MIDCM coursework in a professional setting, such as language aid, guided research, community development, proposal/grant support, youth engagement activities and education initiatives. My two primary projects throughout the summer internship were the Vulnerable Populations Project and the CYFAR Grant Program. The Vulnerable Populations Project focuses on the nine groups of youth listed above. I was tasked with researching information on each group, finding federal laws related to each specific group, and condensing the information to be posted online to the public.
With an internship at Kane County Health Department, I hope to gain a better understanding of the different aspects of Public Health and County government. The areas I am especially interested in are disease prevention, epidemiology, and administration/policy. My goals include to learn and hopefully be part of the process of investigating and preventing the spread of communicable diseases. Being a sophomore at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville I am currently studying how to apply theories to programs. And I believe that this internship will serve as a great way to apply what I have learned in my classes. I am also very interested in the process of educating the community and raising awareness. I am currently volunteering for the Southern
When I first caught wind of the Clinical Care program at C-TEC I knew right away that this would be a great opportunity for me to get a head start in my career. Once I received my acceptance letter
I have greatly enjoyed my human services field experience. I usually interacted with a senior named Gloria, who lives in a retirement home, having conversations, playing games, and even going on short walks, allowing her to decide what we would do for the day. This gave me a great opportunity to get involved
For my cooperative practice in AHS 393, I interned at Indiana State University’s Student Health Promotion (SHP). SHP operates under Student Affairs as a part of the Student Counseling Center to create and promote a healthy college community. They focus on encouraging students to identify the benefits of, need for, healthy lifestyle choices through the promotion of comprehensive mind/body wellness, timely marketing, ongoing direct interactions and by supporting a community that enables these choices. My supervisor was Janet Weatherly, the associate director of SHP. My main duty and favorite part of my co-op was running their Motivational Monday programs. Each Monday we tabled in HMSU to talk to the student walking by about a different health topics and resources. Overall, I really enjoyed my co-op. I loved interacting and making a difference right here in my local community. No two days were ever the same! My only wish was if we could have stayed and done more programs.

The agency where I am completing my internship is called Center for Family Services. This organization provides a wide range of services. I am working in their Family First program. This program is a substance abuse program just for mothers who must attend drug court or have an open case with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency. These women are ordered to complete a substance abuse program. This program serves a diverse cultural and ethnic population who may have experienced trauma in their life. Many times, trauma and post traumatic stress can lead to substance abuse.
Today was my first day at my new internship at Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) at Saint James. I worked alongside with my site supervisor Sue-Ann Villano, she gave an introduction to RHIO and its purpose. I was also introduced with other employees in the office and their contributions to RHIO.
