Colin Powell, former United States Secretary of State, once stated, “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” Many of us are dreamers; we thrive for something different. A dream is simply an unrealistic fantasy. Some fight to make their dreams become real, they refuse to be told “no”. Rosetta Wakefield, the courageous heroine of I Shall Be Near to You, follows her husband, Jeremiah, by enlisting in the army. Erin Lindsay McCabe presents instances where characters are faced with obstacles that conflict with achieving their dream. While dreams are usually unattainable, all it takes is hard work and determination to achieve your dream because sacrifices will be made and obstacles will be overcome …show more content…

People working on their dreams will encounter unmotivated, ignorant individuals who will try to convince them that nothing is possible. Nonetheless, they overcame the prejudice and heavily relied on determination and motivation to succeed. Because they realize that it is achievable and crucial to accomplish their ambition. When comparing “The Rose that grew from Concrete” By Tupac Shakur and “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, it is seen that both authors focus on how people must not give up, yet they have completely different perspectives which they express using personification and symbolism.
In the mystery book, When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead, justice is found because Marcus, the antagonist in the book, causes Sal’s death, even though it was not on purpose, and wants to get justice. On page 175 it states, “Because it was kind of his fault. Marcus didn’t mean for any of it to happen, but if he hadn’t ran after Sal, and Sal hadn’t run into the street, wouldn’t you still be alive?” In this quote, Miranda has an internal realization that, although not intended, Marcus had caused Sal’s death. This is because Marcus had established early on fear from Sal by punching him, and if Sal had not been afraid of Marcus, he would not have run into the street. In order for Marcus to get justice, he traveled back in time to save Sal. In the
In the book Unstoppable by Tim Green, the theme is to not give up on your dream no matter how many obstacles are in your way.
In a world where anything can happen, it is important to not the let everything occur by chance. More often than not, people have to make opportunities for themselves. To do this, people must be determined and rely on their hard work, rather than fate. In order to achieve a dream, sacrifices must be made. Homer Smith, the main character in William E. Barrett’s Lilies of the Field, is an African American Baptist man who learns that what he gained by accomplishing his dream outweighed the sacrifices and obstacles he faced. The dream, or rather vision, is originally that of a group of nuns, but soon becomes Homer, too. In the beginning, Homer plans on helping the nuns a little as he passed through, but soon learns that he cares about their dream being finished just as much as the nuns do. Homer Smith must rely solely on his strong will, hard work, and a little help before he is able to accomplish his ultimate goal.
Many essays in Joan Didion’s book, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, argues about the topic of dreams. In her essay “John Wayne: A Love Story,” she admires the star of her childhood, John Wayne. However, when Wayne becomes sick, Didion must decide if having Wayne shape her dreams was a mistake.
The world loves dreamers. Every, day people are inspired by other people who strive to achieve their dreams of grandeur. They pick their heroes: charismatic, daring, and habitually dead. The romantic ideals of these individuals present skewed views of reality and often lead to dire situations.
Rose is unable to fully accept herself or the statements made by her mother throughout the chapter, until she reflects back on her relationship and realizes how her mother predicted this by the condition of the garden taken care of by her husband. She understands her mother finally and stands up to Ted, explaining to him how she was going to fight for everything in the divorce.
Madness and desperation can motivate some of the most extreme actions of individuals. For instance, when faced with a loneliness she was forced into by her overprotective father, Miss Emily Grierson in “A Rose for Emily” struggles to cope with a changing environment after his death. Her mental deterioration even culminates into the murder of her significant other Homer Barron to keep him from leaving her as well. In his story, William Faulkner foreshadows Miss Emily’s mental instability from the very beginning with specific hints. Some of those tactics are portrayed in the description of Miss Emily’s family history, the words and actions of the community, and her inability to distinguish between the past and the present.
In conclusion, William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a short story that is, a tale of the pressures of society and the ways in which they can wear people down. Miss Emily lacked adaptive coping skills to help her maintain stressors, and for this reason, she was starting to have mental
In the short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner, Emily, the protagonist, is shown as someone who’s life is falling apart and brought down by society. An Anonymous writer once said, “it is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.” This quote is divided into two sentences. The first sentence represents the protagonist from Marge Piercy’s poem, “Where Dreams Dome From.” This is because College is important to her and she believes that she will find a way to accomplish her dream. The second sentence represents the main character, Walter Mitty, from James Thurber’s short story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Mitty is a man who has daydreams and wishes that his reality would be as adventurous as his dreams. However, that is not always the case. Marge Piercy’s protagonist and Walter Mitty both are members of controlling families that try to constrict them of their

I also felt a little curious as to what Mr. Hughes could have been facing in his own life that would spark the words. My curiosity ultimately inspired me to head out to the library to get the book “Montage of a Dream Deferred” so that I could get a better feel as to what Mr. Hughes was trying to help his readers feel.
As Walt Disney once said “All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” Courage is something that everyone is born with, but only some are courageous enough to find it and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as “Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As readers we must understand that there are going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to find the courage within, the reader is able to learn that courage truly is self-identifiable. There may be people along the way to help one find courage. However, it is
