At the University of Iowa I am currently involved with greek life, specifically the sorority Pi Beta Phi. Being in the chapter involves many different aspects. The chapter's philanthropy is called, "Read, Lead, Achieve." Pi Beta Phi is dedicated to help raise money to donate to literacy causes. Pi Beta Phi has also donated 1 million books to children in need of materials. I chose to join this sorority for their philanthropy, because I value literacy as a future teacher. I also hold a position in my chapter, a Policy and Standards Board member. This means myself and a team hold the women in our chapter accountable for any misbehavior, and work with them to find ways to change it.

I learned so much about the things I was capable and not capable to do and about the foundation of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. The lovely ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. always made me feel very comfortable to the point that I was able to be myself around them. However, when I tried that with the other sorority members it did not felt the same way. The other sorority made me feel left out and uncomfortable when being around them and that’s something that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. did not. Being able to talk one on one, ask for help and talk to the ladies like a regular friend was one of the reason why I chose Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority

I live by Alpha Delta Pi’s open motto “We Live For Each Other” which is the ultimate ritual. Our shared values of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and leadership to create better women, are things that I value and try to weave into my daily life. This is accomplished by actively thinking each day about what we can do for each other and putting it into action. I strive to be the best version of myself by giving back what this sorority has given to me. Above all else, I live my ritual by creating a positive environment in the house and finding ways to help my chapter see that they joined for our shared values not for the social benefits. Being in a sorority is very rewarding yet can be very time consuming. Each member that is part of a sorority has a huge role to play even if you do not hold a position within the organization. My most meaningful moment in Gamma Phi Beta was the day I was elected Chapter President. Throughout my life, I have never been very confident in myself or my abilities. During the whole election process, I was expressing a lot of self doubt. I didn’t know if I could hold a position, let alone help lead our chapter. My hesitation soon disappeared when my sisters wanted me to become president. Without my sisters supporting me and encouraging me, I would not be as a happy as I am, nor would I be as confident as I am today. The three main reasons I am excited to join a sorority include my personal development, loyalty and friendship, and support of my aspirations. As a sister, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal development. I am confident that my experience and communication skills will be enriched by the activities that I participate in, the responsibility I take, and the people I meet. I am seeking membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated because I want to grow and contribute my time and talent to an illustrious, originating organization. I aspire to be a part of a sisterhood where I can express myself, and have my skills nourished by prospering African –American women. This summer I was involved in a traumatic car accident and survived, tragically two of my dearest friends did not. On the car third spin I squeezed my eyes shut, and braced myself for a collision. Suddenly, the car jolted forward and flipped. At that very moment I realized that I am here for a greater purpose, and vowed to take the necessary steps to fulfill that purpose. God is not finished with me yet, and I do not want to sit on my Lord.

A sister may tell one that a sorority may appear as a partying thing, but in reality a sorority is a group that gives back to the community while having fun at the same time. Many resources do not talk about sororities in general. The resources mentioned a special group called the Divine Nine. Together these nine societies make up what is known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Barker 17). The NPHC contributes abundantly to the community from: improving health care, raising scholarship funds, and promoting literacy to working for women’s rights, aiding the NAACP, and organizing social justice and civil rights, … (Fine 2). There are only four societies in the Divine Nine that are sororities. These were the first sororities formed on college campuses and have successfully made a massive impact in every community.

My involvement in the Greek community has allowed me to grow my leadership skills and opportunities. I am heavily involved within my fraternity and I hold leadership positions as well as giving back to community. I currently hold the position of house manager within in my fraternity which I am responsible for the physical appearance and proper maintenance of the building which includes maintaining a filing system for receipts, bills, and inventory of Fraternity property. In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. “Being in a sorority is about learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters,” Danielle explained. After hearing her explanation, I couldn’t agree more.
