I am fortunate enough to have parents that can afford to send me to college, and support my choice to pursue a higher education. By attending college, I will eventually graduate with a degree and later earn a high paying career. Along with this, I have found college to be a way to discovering who I am. I have been able to move out, take over my own bills, and earn responsibility by doing so. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to attend college. Financial reasons typically hold individuals back from attending universities, and that later may affect their lives. Although I attend class daily, the true effect college will have on me in the future goes unnoticed. An education is something that is highly valued, and so important. I was raised in a environment of Generations after Generations of parents grandparents and family members that had a disadvantage of attending College because lack of finical funds and knowledge of the importance of college. Getting an education is extremely important in my family because it signifies hard work. No one in my immediate family has attended college yet and I would like to be the one that ends this cycle and graduates college. When going into the 5th grade, I would drive by kipp every single day. Every time I would drive by, I would constantly tell my mom that I wanted to attend kipp my 5th grade year. When I got accepted into kipp, I was so excited. At the age of 10, I was being introduced to college. My very first homeroom was Brown University. Kipp pushed students to want to attend college to better their futures. I stayed in kipp from 5th-12th grade. Those years in kipp, we went on plenty of college tours so that the students could get a feeling of how college is. In high school when preparing for college, kipp offered so much help when it came down to ACT prep and also preparing for college interviews. I am a daughter of a father who migrated from Sierra Leone with nothing but a suitcase, opportunity and a high school degree. I am a daughter of a mother who struggled to finish high school and she never went back to school for her college degree. I am a sister of four brothers: 1 didn’t graduate from high school, 1 graduated from high school but never pursued a college degree, 1 enlisted in the army and went to college for chemistry and the last one struggled in college for 6 years because of his learning disability. I am Gonto Robinson, a senior, psychology and nursing major, and I will graduate a year and a half late in order to pursue two degrees. Staying in school and pursuing a higher education wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for my family and teachers in high school.

My mother worked four jobs at once to make financial ends meet, while always stressing the importance of education and financial independence to my brother and myself. My grandmother only achieved a second grade education due to the financial constraints on her family at a young age, but still in the end managed to make certain that of her children and grandchildren had what was needed to flourish and become successful, educated members of the community. The tenacity and history of these two women I still carry with me today. Their struggles have inspired to me to only want more from life, but also serve as a positive role model for the younger members of my community. I observed from other family members how an education can open a multitude of doors and opportunities. I want to make the biggest and most significant on my community and on my family as possible, and the only foreseeable path is to achieve a college education to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and connections needed to flourish and implement positive

One day in 2011, I had an epiphany that I wanted to become the CEO of a hospital one day. The CEO of Rose Medical Center became aware of this and informed me that I could certainly have his job one day, but I must first go back to school and get my Master's degree. He is not the only person that has hounded me about going back to school. Many other managers, administrators and even family members have said the same. Clearly they see something in me that I had not quite yet see in myself. I think I am finally coming to the realization that if they think I can obtain a Master's degree, then I certainly possess the skills, knowledge and motivation to go back to school. Perusing higher education, going to college, getting a degree seems to be way too easy for people to accomplish these days. Getting through high school is simple enough, all you have to do is show up and stay on task. The next step after high school is college for most people, anyone can do it, but why is it so simple? College used to be difficult to achieve, you go to college and people look up to you. The answer to all of this, Financial Aid, the government will pay for your college tuition based on your family’s income.

If a high school wants to go to college, a high school diploma is needed. Also, if a person does not go to college after high school, he or she is still eligible to go to college later in life. A high school diploma will help a person make more than minimum wage as well as give opportunities for raises and promotions. Students are taught to write, figure out math equations, and discipline study habits. These method will help a person in the future when he or she is presented an opportunity. For example, a person who wants a job needs to write an essay about their personality. Graduates will have the basic training on how to write the perfect essay and nail their job interviews!

Many people, since I was little, pressured me into going to college. My parents didn't mind what I decided, all that mattered is what makes me happy. They would support me no matter what my heart decided to do. Over the years family members tried to persuade me into believing that without a college degree you'll never become successful. To them, college had to be a part of my future which I think is the main reason I decided that college would be for me. Ever since I was told that I started to disagree and pushed myself to realize that I wanted to prove them wrong. I can do anything I want and accomplish any goals I have as long as I set my mind to it. College isn't the only way to become successful, working can get you places you never thought possible.

I always wanted to go to college growing up, but because my family, along with my sisters and myself, we born and raised back in a refugee camp in Nepal. The school in which I started my schooling was also in a refugee camp. We didn’t have enough financial help to have all the things that we needed. We had to depend upon the support we got from the agencies. When we arrived in the United States, we got a lot of assistance from different agencies. I also got chance to attend school again. But, my family is composed of five members. My parents have to look after the education of the three of us. They do not have a lot monetary resources to fulfill my desire to go to college. I had nagging feeling that college was a dream that won't come true

By participating in the University of Madison College Access Program I'm hoping to achieve many wonderful memories, meet new people, and familiarize myself with the process of going to college, but also to take advantage of the program and retain useful information for later use in my academic career.

My family always has a high expectation on me; they think that a college diploma is a must for the society nowadays; I would be a loser if I can’t get a diploma in such a competitive society. I can understand why they think going to college is that important. My parent started working after finishing their middle school as they couldn’t afford the expensive high school tuition at that time; they know how difficult it was working with such low education and they always shared this kind of experience to me. By their influence, I had been working hard on studying and I was clear in mind that going to college is what I have to do in the next few years.
