Describe why you would like to pursue a degree in Exercise and Movement Science in 500 words or less. Many different things have steered me towards the Exercise and Movement Science major. When I was younger I would go with my brother to physical therapy for his cerebral palsy. I would do his exercises with him and be his support system. However, within the past semester and a half the biggest influence has been my skiing accident in mid-January, which left me with a torn ACL, MCL, and displaced femoral cartilage. This has allowed me to understand the mental, emotion, and physical tolls a person goes through during an injury. Balancing my schoolwork and self care in order to recover has definitely been tricky; however, by taking EXMS
9th grade I fractured my lateral condyle of the femoral head, leaving me with 2 months of physical therapy. At first I hated it never wanting to go, saying my trainer was too young to even know what he was doing. However, when my trainer, Adam, started to make it a game with me on how fast I can progress my competitive side came to play and i couldn't help but want to take him up on his offer. As the weeks passed by I started loving the atmosphere watching patients work towards
I have always been interested in physical activities and how it can influence an individual’s mental and physical health. My passion towards athletics developed at a young age as I have been involved in various sports including swimming and tennis. Moreover, my desire to study Kinesiology stems from the technological development and its impact on modern society. As technology advances, it allows for many individuals to become dependent on their devices thus proposing health risks. I wish to pursue a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree in hopes to promote a healthier lifestyle amongst society and gain a greater understanding of how physical movements can affect the human body. Furthermore, my experience as a cooperative education student at Humber
I plan to use the knowledge I will gain through this University to take my dream one step at a time. To assist in achieving my goal of owning my own business, I have also decided to minor in Business. A business minor will be a great asset for the intention of working with clients and creating a successful business. After I acquire my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science Applied, I plan to attend MSU's Exercise Physiology and Nutrition graduate program. This program will allow me to focus on understanding the determinants of physical activity, exercise metabolism and nutrition, and provide me with all the tools necessary to make my dream of owning my own fitness and wellness facility a
The start of my exercise science journey began when I was a little kid. I played sports throughout my childhood and into my senior year of high school but my desire to really exercise started when I went to gym class. I thought our Gym teacher, Mrs. Starnes was the coolest lady and I enjoyed how she could talk about our bodies and knew different activities that got everyone to exercise. Also, I loved watching college football and baseball as a child and remember seeing that when the athletes would get hurt; that they would get help from one or two people who would try to find out the problem and what happened. When I was little, I did not know that the job that I saw on television would be one that I would be aiming towards as I got older.
My major is Kinesiology and with my degree I hope to become an athletic director. The main reason why I am taking this course is for my minor where I plan to have a background with Health Service Admission.
As I have almost completed my sophomore year of college, I know what my career goals are at this point. I am currently on the physical therapy track planning to declare the major of exercise science: applied kinesiology. I became interested in PT after hearing many appealing things about it such as: the rapid growth and demand of physical therapists, the purpose it serves, and financial stability that comes along with the rewarding work. I am eager to learn about the functions, progress, and healing of the human body in the most natural manner, and through exercise science my knowledge in this study will certainly grow.
During my undergraduate studies, I was a four-year collegiate athlete. Being a student-athlete broadened my time management, effective communication, and leadership skills. While I had been playing soccer since I was in diapers, I knew that my education was far more important to my long-term professional goal of becoming an OT. I majored in health science and psychology because I was fascinated with the connection between the mind and body. I was
Participation in sport alone has not been enough for me. A degree in Sport and Exercise Science is the obvious option to satisfy my fascination with how the human body functions, a deep-rooted passion which has only been amplified by my own exploits as an athlete.
To accomplish anything in life, you must set goals. These goals must be realistic and achievable. Two years ago, I was at a point in my life that I never believed I would see. I was finally at my associate’s degree graduation day. Becoming at teen mom at 17, college had never even crossed my mind. This was a moment in my life where I was able to not be your average teen mom statistic. Continuing to better my life and my daughter’s I set a new goal after graduation to achieve my bachelor’s degree. After speaking with UMUC counselors, I decided to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Social Science with a minor in Emergency Management. Currently, I am in my final two classes at UMUC with a scheduled graduation date of May 15.
Working with children and supporting their learning is my passion. I have always been inspired by the opportunity teaching offers each child to reach their full potential; which understandably plays a crucial part in children achieving lifelong learning.
As a student athlete who has suffered several sports-related injuries, including concussions, I plan to pursue a major and a career that allows me to help other athletes recover physically and mentally from sports-related injuries. I plan to major in Athletic Training with possible minor in Psychology. From my conversations with a faculty adviser in the School of Public Health, I know that the Athletic Training program at IU is extremely competitive. In case I do not get accepted into the program, my back-up major is Exercise Science. After earning that degree, I hope go on to earn my Master’s in Athletic Training.
I didn’t know what I was going to study or what my plans for the future were. I began speaking with a variety of professionals in areas such as healthcare and business. During my pursuit of finding a career path I decided to observe a physical therapist as well as a physical therapist’s assistant at Northwest Ohio Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. While observing, I was able to view the physical therapist work with a diverse group of patients. One patient was a young athlete working towards rehabilitating a knee injury. Although this particular patient helped gain my interest in physical therapy, there was another patient that genuinely opened my eyes to the importance of physical therapy as a profession. This patient was a middle aged woman who had been in a car accident and had shattered multiple bones spanning from her foot up to her hip on one side of her body. When I met her, she had been working with physical therapists for months and was just beginning to get comfortable walking short distances. Meeting this woman changed my perception of the profession, and after these observations I decided physical therapy was what I ultimately wanted to do with my life. I began contemplating how I could use my strengths and make a difference in this career. Hopefully, from my knowledge of science obtained from the exercise science curriculum I would be able to develop new methods of
Life can change in a split second when an unanticipated injury or disease hinders someone’s normal daily life. Modern medicine, physicians and families can only do so much but physical therapy can help recoup the life many of us take for granted. It often isn’t until we lose something that we as humans realize what we had such as the value of our body’s ability to take us through each day. A physical therapist is the person who stays with a patient for the duration of the rehabilitation process. A physical therapist leads the patient through the process of regaining physical strength and helps the patient regain control of their future. Much like many careers that involve interaction with individuals, physical therapy reaches beyond
Some of the major skills that students gain from majoring in Exercise Science are exceptional knowledge in human anatomy, and physiology relevant to exercise and wellness. The knowledge
You get a real appreciation and respect for the rehab process after going through it first hand. Many students came to me knowing I could emphasize what they were going through. In less than twelve months I had two major surgeries on my knees. Thanks to my athletic trainers and my physical therapist I was able to cheer, tumble, and start every game of my senior year. I was also given the opportunity to play collegiate soccer! Without my trainer and physical therapist none of this would have been possible. After experiencing first hand the difference athletic trainers and physical therapist can make I know without a doubt I have a future in the medical field. My heart is in it, I want to start with earning a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training then continue for a masters in Athletic Training. Being a student athlete I've seen and experienced first hand how vital athletic trainers are. I understand and have the dedication they have to possess in order to excel in their career. They have to be on alert at games and practices and know their players. A less observant athletic trainer may have allowed me back on the field the night I tore my ACL, but he knew my mannerisms and ability to block out pain and knew something was very wrong. He told coach I was done for the night even though I had been trying to run/shake it off. I want to learn all I can and be the best athletic trainer I can be to help others
