From a very young age I was aware of the importance of education and the amount of hard work it entailed. My mother decided to go back to school for nursing when I was six years old. Looking back, I remember her studying late into the night and attending study groups on weekends to facilitate her dream. It took her four years to complete her degree, a task that wasn’t easy for her since she was also raising four children, but this set a remarkable example for me. Watching my mother complete her goal taught me that you are in control of your own circumstances. Since the age of 18, I have been financially independent. I paid for (and continue to pay for) my undergraduate degree, as well as my post-baccalaureate studies, predominantly by working. As I continue in pursuit of my doctorate, working may not be a possibility and has forced me to explore other options. If awarded this financial need scholarship the additional money would help me; focus on my studies, decrease my loan amount and increase my overall quality of life.
Paying for my education has given me immense pride. Working while in school has taught me excellent time management skills and has given me a vested interest in my success. However, it does distract from my studies. The minimum wage in Florida

Having an outlet for the rigors of student life is important. My first year returning to school at Kapiʻolani Community College (KCC), I work full-time in addition to attending school full-time. Not only were my grades lower, but all I had time for was school and work. I had a high amount of stress, and was not getting enough sleep. I got through the demanding year, but I knew something had to change. The subsequent years at KCC I attended school part-time. When I reduced my workload I noticed a vast difference in my grades and attitude. Receiving financial assistance will help me create a balance between all aspects of my
I believe that I am a worthy candidate for this scholarship due to my recognition of the financial impact of college. Growing up in a single parent home has been a financially and emotionally difficult feat for my mother and myself. When I was seven years old, my father passed away from a blood clot. During his life, he served in Vietnam, where he was granted a Purple Heart after shattering his kneecap on a landmine. He was on disability, and my mother was employed as a rehabilitation nurse, the only source of income in our family. After his death, my mother and I both began to go to therapy for our grief over losing my father. Focusing on my mental health helped me accept the meaning of death, and struck my motivation to honor my father and ensure that he would be proud of me. When I grew up, we always relied on getting clothes from thrift stores to save money and cutting any unnecessary expenditures. My mother always worked to have enough money for food and comfort. I received monetary Survivor Benefits after his death until my high school graduation this past May. As mentioned before, my mother has Multiple Sclerosis, which is an unfortunately expensive illness. Shortly after her diagnosis, the rehabilitation unit of her work closed and she was left on unemployment right before my sophomore year of high school. I was not old enough to drive or work, so finances were incredibly strict. On my 16th birthday, I attended an orientation to work as a lifeguard at our local YMCA. The next day, I also got my license to eliminate transportation issues. My employment alleviated financial and emotional stress on my mother, as I was able to contribute to the bills and my personal expenses. Throughout my life, my mother has also been very dependent on alcohol to relieve stress. There were numerous times where I
Both my older sisters are in college too, and a long way from home, which is difficult for my family to afford rent. My mom has never had an education at all, which makes my mom wanting us to pursue an education that she never had. I am a first-generation student and this motivates me to take my education seriously. Since education is a privilege and an opportunity I plan to take full advantage of it, but in order for me to continue, a scholarship will help open the path to my next step in attending college. Public housing and high school experiences have influenced me to take advantage of every opportunity and take the chance to get a degree so I can learn to take responsibility for myself so I can provide for my family. They taught me to pursue an education so I wouldn't have to get help for funding for my family's rent and instead for asking for help maybe one day when I have a career I can help fund other families in need. I wish to achieve greatness and accomplishments like Stephen J. Bollinger did. They showed me that education is the answer to success and that I can pursue any career I
i currently work 24-30 hours a week while going to school full time. This has been one of the most challenging semesters for me trying to keep up financially and keep up my good grades. I live on my own and pay for my own school and living expenses. This scholarship would help me relieve some of the tension I have for next semester and the following after being that, I wouldn’t have to worry about school expenses.
However, my joy is marred by the fact that I have to cope with significant financial problems. During all these years I was forced to take low-wage jobs and, as a result, I don’t have any savings. I live on my own. My amazing parents have supported me morally and financially throughout my life, but they are not young already and close to retirement age. As a 30-year-old woman, I realize that very soon it will be my turn to take care of them. I live alone and have to pay all learning and living costs and to support myself. My student loan will not cover my accommodation costs. These are the realities of my life. That is why receiving this scholarship means a lot to me. It will give me the opportunity to complete my education and subsequently will allow me to succeed in life. Therefore, any financial help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.
College tuitions are about the annual income of my family. Receiving help from my family and working a part time job will not be enough to cover the expenses that come with post-secondary education. Therefore, any financial help I can get, will be crucial to my future academic success. I have a goal to break the routine all my family
Since I am the fourth child of six heading to college, it is very important to me to be able to pay for most of my schooling. Having five other kids to support my parents will not be able to help out a lot so most of the funding for my school will be up to me. I know it is hard to come out of school with no debt but I want to be able to graduate with a degree and have the least amount of debt possible. To accomplish this goal I have worked hard throughout high school to maintain good grades and stay involved so I am worthy of scholarships like this one. Participating in three sports every year and being involved in 4+ extracurricular activities can be very demanding but I have used these experiences to build character and leadership. I have
My philosophy is, those who to choose to go to college and earn a degree are the strongest of people. Everyone should know that college is difficult, time consuming, and expensive but they should also know how beneficial going to school can really be. Although what I said is true, some people would disagree, and that is totally fine. At first I didn’t think college was for me, but I’m glad I made the right decision like so many other people.
“Alexandria De Jesus please report to room 21 to assist in the OR.” These are the words I would like to hear after graduating college. College will prepare me for road to success. After earning my degree, it is up to me where I decide to take my life and I want to drive my life to a road that includes a medical profession. Being a surgeon is crucial to me because my grandmother was in the medical field and was head of the ER in a hospital. My aunt, who is also in the medical field, is currently a neonatologist. Also my godmother has a degree in bio pre med. My family members have a great influence on me as I grow. As you can see the year after I graduate college will be crucial for me to get my career started. I will graduate with a PHD and
I want to go to college to fight my boredom while doing something productive for my future. I need to start fresh since I’ve graduated my Diploma in Business Management and I was really lost after graduating. So it’s time to start my energy again to figure out who do I want to be in my future instead of
College as great as it is, is expensive. It can be a burden just thinking about how to pay off our student loans. Although, one of the greatest ways of relieving this burden is through scholarships! If I were to receive this scholarship, it would help a great deal in relieving some of the financial need for my education. I have several siblings my parents are probably also worrying about too. It takes a lot of money to send four people to college. But with this scholarship, I hope I can alleviate some of the money for my brothers and sister. It would mean a lot to me if could make my parents by not having to worry about me as much. Scholarships like this are stepping stones for students like me trying to get into college. After I am done with college at Mississippi State, I will happily and diligently pursue my passion as a Computer Scientist. If I can receive a scholarship, it can begin the process of paying for the hike over the mountain of a college
For the last 15 years, I have been a part of a school system where a majority of its students fail to take their education seriously. It's hard growing up in a community where the people who I go to school with every day aspire to do nothing more with their life than to work at the local factory. While it does have good pay, I want more. I want experiences, I want opportunities that I can not pass up, I want to be more than this small community has to offer, but it's treacherous. It takes hard work and dedication. Two characteristics I pride myself in having. I work hard in everything I do; from maintaining my high GPA, to receive multiple awards for my countless athletics and extracurriculars, I put my all into it. You need the right attitude,
As a child of a single parent of two I have witnessed my mother struggle to provide for our family at times. She works two jobs while I watch my five year old sister when necessary. Along with my mother working two jobs I also have a job just to help pay for the things that I know I will need as a high school senior. Our situation makes me wonder how I will manage to pay for school because my mother cannot do it on her own. In addition to that my grandmother is in remission from breast cancer treatment and my mother provides for her when she asks. I am constantly applying for scholarships with the hope that I will go to school for free.
Growing up in a small town, Jackson, Tennessee, seemed like nightmare at times and I was determined to move away the second I graduated high school. I would not necessarily descript Jackson as an exciting place with a lot of fun activities, but it is my hometown. Because there was nothing for me to do throughout the city, I spent a lot of time with my family. My family means everything to me and I honestly do not know where I would be if it were not for their support and love. Not to mention, I was compelled to go to church twice a week and because my grandfather was my Pastor, I was present on the third row. My family and faith has taught me the importance of staying true to my morals and values, which has helped me make the best decisions in life. Nonetheless, I was inspired to be a leader and a mentor to those around me.
Life was flashing before my eyes. I was in awe that the moment was actually taking place. As I concluded my junior year of high school, many of my peers applied to universities and had an idea of the profession they planned to pursue. Although I had somewhat of an idea of the route I wished to take, I still felt a little nervous and uneasy. I knew that college was for me however, I did not think I would succeed at a large university my first year of furthering my education. Originally, I thought of orthodontics. As a matter of fact, I went back and forth for quite some time with orthodontics along with considering the pros and cons of the career with my own orthodontist, Dr. Cynthia Fee, over several different talks. Yet, I decided this was
Going to college will allow me to fulfill a childhood dream and better my chances for promotions at work. Education has never been a priority in my family. My mother has an eighth-grade education, my siblings and I have either high school diplomas or our equivalency GED’s. However, no one in my family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins has ever graduated from college. As a child, I wanted to be the first in our family to earn a degree, now, thanks to University of the People I have the chance to earn a degree. Staying enrolled in at least two courses per term, I will graduate a semester before my son and my niece will, allowing the dream to come true. After completing my studies, I will be eligible for promotions into management at
