I have always been a curious kid. I always pondered on how everything worked. I looked up at the vast sky and wondered why it was blue. I marvelled at my television. Although I grew up with a T.V. all my life, but the day I questioned its integrity was a very difficult one. I poked and prodded at every machine in my house trying to decipher its function. If I couldn't solve it right away, then I would ask my mother or father. Soon my parents grew tiresome of all my questions and would bid me to search for a dictionary or encyclopedia. I was always exceptionally curious in my endeavor of finding out how the world worked especially for the human body. I craved the knowledge, and I also made it a requirement for myself. Around high school I focused my curiosity on the human body, Biology and Anatomy soon became my favorite subjects. My Anatomy teacher made …show more content…
When the time came to choose what I would major in at Howard University, I knew at once I wanted to go into healthcare. I revered that I would be able to help those who were ailing, I also knew that I would enjoy learning more about the human body. When I got to Howard I stumbled on the Nutrition department, I enjoyed food and I enjoyed even more learning how it affected the our systems. I declared Nutritional Science (Pre-Med) as my major. I chose a Pre-Medical concentration because even though I loved Nutrition I knew I wanted to do more. I had always had Pharmacy in my mind but I was even more enticed when I walked past the Pharmacy College on my way to the Biology building for class. With haste I signed up the for the Pre-Pharmacy club in which I got to shadow a local pharmacist. At the Pharmacy, I immediately was comfortable, Since then I have been working in my local Pharmacy this past year. In this year I
Since early childhood, I have always been an inquirer. Asking my parents questions they could not answer became expected of me. “Why is the sky blue?” “How is milk made?” Because they did not know the answer, my natural curiosity steered me to researching them for myself. I remember being awake during the late night, anticipating the theme song of my favorite show How It’s Made on the Discovery Channel. In these moments, I felt as if I was entering another world; a world where time did not exist, things made sense, and my curiosity was fulfilled.
At 10 years old I had already read virtually all the books in biography series we had in our school library. Harry Houdini, Albert Einstein, John Lennon, Harriet Tubman, and many more famous individuals life stories were my favorite. Being a germaphobe, I always myself reading books containing information about disease and illnesses (which of course did not avail.) I believe those might be the books that sparked my fascination with how the human body works, the brain to be exact. “But at home I would hear my mother wondering, “What do you see in your books?”
In high school, there was no clear picture for my future. With an immense grasp in science and math, I knew that was my calling. I wasn't sure of the overall field of study I aspired but I know I wanted to master it and enjoy it for life. My high school teacher referred me to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Pharmacy School Preview Day. I attended the event my junior year and was washed over in awe. I found a greater appreciation for the use of medicine and the applications
medical field. Biology, my science of choice, always piqued my curiosity time after time. I was enamored with the
As the first generation in my family to go to college I learned the importance of education. I graduated from Benedictine University with a Bachelors in Science and an Environment Certificate. I became intregted by pharmacy when I started to spent countless hours at a hospital watching my grandfather go in and out of surgeries and treatments for cancer. Seeing the different medication being handed to him inspired me to understand biological and chemical processes that happened. A Pharmacists, role is to aim to help patients treat illness by introducing new developed treatment of medicines with a range of patients. I began to take special interest in memorizing all my grandfather’s medications and how practical and clinical aspect pharmacy worked.
The pre-pharmacy courses ignited my love for the sciences so much so that I declared my major in biology; however, the path has been difficult. Freshman year, I became depressed due to poor time-management skills, lack of support, and by over-extending myself. My grades suffered and I contemplated withdrawing from college, something I promised myself I would never do. Due to my dedication and perseverance, I pushed past my depression. With the guidance of my pharmacist and therapist, I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression for which I was able to receive proper medication A combination of seeing a therapist and antidepressants have proved to be revolutionary for me. I improved my GPA and excelled in classes I previously thought were impossible. My pharmacist was a tremendous help when it came to the anti-depressants, and without her guidance, I wouldn’t have succeeded as much as I have. When I saw the close interaction between my therapist and pharmacist, I knew I was receiving the best help possible. I also realized that as a pharmacist, I can help properly care for patients and build a long trusting relationship with them, which makes me enthusiastic about the future. My early college setbacks, not only prepared me for future academic success through perseverance, but also reaffirmed my passion and desire to join the medical field as a
I have always had a passion for education and being at Saint Vincent Academy, I have grown into a passionate young woman. Academically, I have been exposed to many different classes such as American History, Women's History, Modern History, a very graphic freshman year health class, and Human Anatomy and Physiology. Each class has helped me in forming my passion of helping people and the ability to empathize. Through my history classes, I have learned about the need to help others and through my science classes, I have come to the decision to become a nutritionist/ registered dietician. My goal as a nutritionist is to help people take better care of themselves and it will start by acknowledging them on what they put into their body's and the
By the time I entered college, all I wanted was to be a doctor. My pre-medical classes were everything that I could have hoped: engaging, relevant, and exciting. A far cry from the banal boxes to be checked I had been warned about by my high school guidance counselor. My major, Neuroscience, brought me even deeper into the human body, and my Public Health minor gave me a macroscopic view of health to round out my educational experience. I was excited about
While growing up, I spent a good portion of my life struggling with asthma. At a very young age, I realized how much trust I always had in health officials to save my life. This trust made me develop a strong interest in the health sector. Not too long after my first semester at Madonna University, I Atime sitting in amazing pharmacy lectures. My interest increased in my second year, when I took a pharmacology class and made the best score. During the summer of 2012, I decided to work in a pharmacy. It was a terrific experience. I loved every day and looked forward to the next. Pharmacy has many promising career options, which range from retail to drug research and everything between. All these options show how flexible pharmacy is. It enhances challenges in the work field, because no two days are the same. I have always found subjects like chemistry, biology, and pharmacology fascinating. These subjects have a direct relationship with Pharmacy, and my love for them increases my ability to excel in any Pharmacy College. Although it may sound cliché, I take gratification in actually helping people. I am aware that all departments in the health sector are geared toward helping people and promoting the general health of the population, but I particularly love Pharmacy. The importance of a Pharmacist in health care cannot be overrated. I want to be able to play a part in improving the quality of life of the
When I began my journey through college, I was unsure about where my love and respect for science and healthcare would take me, but I knew that I wanted to take those two interests and apply them with the personal fulfillment I felt when it came to helping others. It was not until I began to have health issues, that I became sound in my decision to pursue the path of pharmacy. Being on the receiving end of treatments, made me have a drastic change in the mindset of how I thought about the healthcare of a patient and how I would apply my science knowledge to my future pursuits. When learning about diseases, illnesses, and deficiencies I would always find myself drifting towards trying to develop a plan of action on what could be given to a person suffering and how a person’s treatment could be optimized.
I value and try to get the most out of any educational opportunity. I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of health. I want to pursue a well-rounded education where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader. My goal is to earn at least a bachelor's degree and plan to continue my education at a graduate level. I want to obtain a doctorate degree that reflects my passion. My high school science courses solidified my desire to pursue in a health field for college and led me to enjoy more than just the science taught in school and have inspired me to satisfy my desire for more knowledge. It is my lifelong goal to become a doctor, someone capable of saving and helping others. The fascinating knowledge that I acquire from science and my experience is what I love and is what truly drives me to choose Pre-Medicine as my
My interests in health and nutrition began when I was a child. As I was growing up, I watched my dad as well as many other family members suffer from diabetes. At the time, I did not understand the disease or what caused it. As I grew older, I began learning about diabetes, obesity, and other nutritionally related disorders. I began to realize how diet and proper nutrition play a significant role in the prevention of disease and that proper nutrition can improve overall health.
However, rather than discouraging my love of reading with material I couldn't hope to understand at that age, my father had awoken an even deeper passion. I came to him with my books and demanded explanations for the words I did not know, and that demand for knowledge has not been assuaged since. Since then, I have been enamored with science, with its intricacies and the satisfaction which it brings through sheer understanding. There is nothing else like it, and it is my endeavor to continue learning until the day I die. Although my school does not offer true advanced or AP classes, I have chosen the most difficult science classes with the most infamous teachers I could. I’ve taken dual enrollment classes on computer sciences, medical terminology, and am scheduled to take a course on medical law and ethics next semester. Although all fields of science are fascinating, and I would happily study any of them for hours, anatomy and biology have always been of special interest to me. I plan to continue striving to understand the world around me, and to use that knowledge to improve the world in any way that I
This is year is my first year attending Oakland University and I knew that going into the year that I wanted to go into the medical field, I was just undecided what specifically I wanted to go in to. After taking this class, I have decided that I want to go into the pharmacy program. I am glad that I took this course because it introduced me to many career paths that I did not know about let alone think about as a possible career choice. I decided that I was very interested in pharmacy after learning more about it during the week three weekly response. I think this will be a great career path for me because I am very interested and enjoy math and science, which are a big part of this program and I also want to have a job in the medical field with a less hands on approach.
The High school years are full of great experiences, but also the next step into your future as an adult and what you’re going to become. For myself, I’ve always had a passion for fitness and health. I have settled on my career choice and would like to major in fitness physiology, along with a minor in dietitian/nutritionist, so I can combine meal plans or nutritional advice with working out. This profession had me convinced that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It involves helping people through health and fitness, and also rehabilitation through physical activity. It has all the elements of what I love to do, in helping people and training them. Dietitian/nutritionist is something I also had an interest aside from
