Originally slated for October 1, 2014, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had planned to replace the current ICD-9 codes sets with the new ICD-10 code sets. However, on March 31, 2014, the Senate approved a bill that has delayed the implementation until at least October 2015. The numbers of the ICD means “International Classification of Diseases” (ICD) and the numbers nine and 10 describe therefer to “editions,” just like with books. ICD defines designations prescribed for every possible description of symptom, cause of death, or diagnosis that a human may experience. These codes are utilized used for reporting medical diagnoses as well asand inpatient procedures, according to the CMS. Everyone who works in conjunction with the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required to adopt these code set changes. The CMS has issued a reminder that ICD-10 will not impact affect coding for physician services and outpatient procedures. The World Health Organization (WHO) is the entity which monitors, copyrights, and develops the classification system.
