Monday night was the first meeting of IIDA advocacy group of the year. The group consisted of eleven people total. We had four students including myself who attended the meeting. The professional members jobs array from working as a space planner at Open Square to an interior architect from IA. The meeting started with the president of the group asking each one of us to write down three goals and ideas for a community outreach project. My ideas consisted of working with a homeless shelter to provide adequate rooms for the families, working with a local elementary school to build a maker’s space for the children, and creating a large event that mimic’s TED X by creating a large educational form for all design fields to support a cause.
The process of being chosen for Future Leaders of Jones County included writing an essay and then being interviewed by a panel that oversees the Future Leaders of Jones County. In the organization, we were broken off into small groups and mixed with students from different schools around the county. I played a large role in my group— the fundraising leader. Our goal was to meet the needs of our local Battered Women’s Shelter, which were providing bedding, laundry, and a new playground for the women and their children that were also being homed. This project was very close to all of us in my group because there are so many battered and abused women in our community. In order to achieve the shelter’s wishes, we had to raise at least $1,000, so I had to go out and raise the money. With the help of many in our community, I was able to help my group reach our $1,000 goal, and we were able to go above and beyond accomplishing our project of service. After buying the necessities (pillows, sheets, blankets, detergent) for the shelter, we were able to purchase and put together a completely new play area for the children. The whole project was a success and getting to help better our community by enabling these women to stand up and get out of the situation of being abused so that they can start a new life. Seeing women like this made me realize how important it was
One of my biggest projects the past two years was serving a committee member with the Soroptimist Club of Madera, California to help create the event “Dream it, Be it” This event has touched my heart because it shows girls that no matter your race, religion, or current financial status you can achieve your dreams. Many girls in my small town do not have people in their lives that support or motivate them. It was extremely important to me that these girls realize that they are more than statistics, that they have powerful hungry brains that are willing to take them to the next level with hard work. I wanted these girls to know that I believe in them and I am willing to put my time and energy in for them. Being a first generation college student myself, I knew that I needed to use my voice to help girls to go after their dreams, no matter how far off they may seem. I have been a key member in making this event come to life and through this event I have been able to speak to girls and motivate them. I have found inspiration through community service and I want to spread this fire in my heart. I have been able to use leadership as a powerful tool for growth in my community. In hopes that one day everyone will go after their dreams and desires and use these skills to benefit
The generosity from attendees of the event was incredible. Although I missed the first session, I felt that the event brought people together. It was more than just getting a bowl, it was about community, awareness and education and fostering conversations that emphasize social issues people face silently.
In April of 2014, The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault released a terrifying statistic; one in every five college students experiences sexual assault during their college career. My idea for the Innovation Challenge is to bring awareness to domestic abuse and sexual assault to the students at ASU. We could host a workshop to teach students how to stay safe on campus. In the workshop, we would hold a few different seminars such as hearing from actual victims, forming an on-campus support group, and learning about campus resources. The organization NO MORE allows for anyone to use their logo to raise awareness on domestic abuse and sexual assault, so we could use it to make shirts, bracelets, and other items to sell
The second group task completed was the company research project. To complete this we first targeted a business that was relevant to us. Choosing the right company is important to the success of the group because the work being produced is something the students are passionate about. After some research I stumbled upon MODthread, the company we than decided to research. Personally discovering this company provided me with the opportunity to take more of a leadership role within the group. I quickly took on the task of making all the connections that would eventually make the interview with the CEO, Paul Goncalves happen. As an entrepreneurship major, this experience was exciting as I was able to pick at the mind of an actual successful entrepreneur. From this I was able to obtain a lot of useful information such as knowing
As an incoming Junior, I perceived a need for a club that extended beyond a superficial clique of students gathering to foster their own entertainment. It became my aspiration to establish an enduring and meaningful organization that would produce graduates and a situation which improve our world. To make this idea a reality, I founded a service oriented club called Artisan's Aim. The purpose of the club is to encourage and organize students’ creative, material-based talents to meet community outreach needs. The club represents time spent organizing within the school bylaws, obtaining funding for projects, finding members and officers for the club, teaching the members to craft projects, and delivering the projects to those in need. Artisan’s
Through participating in all these events and volunteer activities, I don’t just feel good after helping, but I could feel the community grow and become more united. As a result , these activities helped the community really understand
Remember that one of GVAHEC’s missions is to educate underserved population about healthy behavior. One staff member attended excel training, she also shared her knowledge about how to protect their system from hackers. Another person attended community health graduation. GVAHEC provides support to healthcare students who have financial problem, so, some of their students have graduated. I think this meeting was very useful to me because I have learned some new things. For example, I have learned how to look for fund raising opportunity, so, in the future, if I work with an organization that needs sponsor, I think I can help. I have also learned through this meeting that when I will be working with this type organization, it is very important to learn new things from other organizations that will help my organization to prosper. On Wednesday September 13, I went to the Phoenix location. We have finished our project regarding St Mary’s food bank presentation. So, two weeks from now, we will be presenting. I have learned many things through this project. For example, in my future career, if I am asked to conduct a project to educate people on healthy behavior, I think I will feel more comfortable to do
The class as a whole chose to join with Firetree Place to promote the facility for adolescents to have a safe place to go after school, as well as to unite the community of Williamsport. Firetree Place is a community center for youth and has services such as mentoring. They are attempting to become a Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate. They’re clients consist of youth in the Williamsport area. Most of these clients come from low-income families due to the services that they provide. Firetree Place holds activities like movie nights, as well as other events that are similar to the community day the class conducted.
CMS Builders Club. Students and staff were challenged to perform an act of kindness and then
After graduating from college, I took a gap-year before attending law school where I worked as a team lead for an AmeriCorps program at the Exchange Club Family Center in Memphis, TN. As a team lead, I oversaw a team of three in compiling data reports and creating specialized events for the impoverished families that were in the various programs at the Exchange Club. One of the programs that we collaborated on was a city-wide conference for middle and high school students. The program invited teenagers to attend the event and learn about a variety of topics including self-esteem and college admissions. I was over the logistics for the entire event. I set the schedule, assigned tasks for the event, reached out to speakers and sponsor for the
The first presentation that I attended was given by one of the CORE Groups that had taken part in the Experience First initiative. The presenters in this group were Kayla Black, Mary Detering, Elsie Heckel, Becca McLemore, and Lincoln Siebert. For their project, this particular group was partnered with Eckert’s Farm and they were challenged to develop and pitch a series of proposals to representatives of the company for consideration. The goal of the project was to increase customer traffic at Eckert’s Belleville location during the winter season.
The main thing that I learned from this project was that advertising to your targeting audience is key to making the whole project a success. This is key and something that our own project lacked because, even though it was promoted, it was not promoted in a way that really caught the Syracuse students to be as informed as they should have been about the events being provided. This really helped me learned to apply these skills when I want to promote a public health event in a community. When doing so, I would have to think about the demographics that I want to target towards my program and how I will advertise it so that these individuals would be motivated to participate in the program and could see the benefits they would get from participating. This is a very important factor when it comes to
In the fall of my senior year in high school, as student council president, I was tasked with communicating with the school the importance of collaborative efforts in reducing negative contributions to the environment. I stood at the podium before the entire high school as my voice trembled and my leg took on spontaneous movements of its own. This would not be the most amazing speech that I would ever give, although it proved to me that leadership is possible, perhaps because of my introverted nature, not in spite of it. It signified tremendous personal growth, a revolution. Initially, all four members of student council had the option of presenting because we worked on the initiatives as a group. Unlike my experience with domestic violence prevention, I decided to be a leader in this cause. It was time for me to advocate for what I believe
The Charitable Organization that I picked to talk about is The Muscular Dystrophy Association, I picked this one because it seems very interesting to me, I wanted to know who can get it if adults can or not, and I wanted to learn about what it is, that not only that I, also wanted to know how you get it and how do you treat and know what their mission is and goals, and I wanted to learn more about it.
