As a new presidential team enters the White House, the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is an important issue that will require changes in strategy if American foreign policy hopes to successfully eliminate the threat of ISIS in the Mideast and beyond. The current policy of the United States on dealing with terrorism through military action emphasizes: utilizing allies, keeping American ground troops out of Iraq and Syria, and direct action through military strikes. This strategy has been relatively successful in the past in keeping ISIS in check, but the recent rising power of the radical state suggests this policy is failing to achieve the ultimate goal of eliminating the threat entirely. foreign policy, new measures need to be considered in order to defeat ISIS. Current President Donald Trump has promised to develop “a new plan to defeat ISIS” that is “foolproof” and will “absolutely crush” ISIS, potentially including “bomb[ing] the shit out of them”, taking their oil, and “tak[ing] out their families” (Quest 2017). Trump has yet to release this promised plan but any new plan needs to consider the option of the use of stronger military force and a greater military presence in the region. The current U.S. foreign policy was a good start, but a successful policy needs to be more aggressive in order to achieve the end goal -- the ultimate defeat of ISIS. Militarily, more U.S. troops need to be deployed to fight on the ground with partner forces that they have been trained and armed (Brands, Feaver 2017). This will allow for greater U.S. control over the actions of partner forces and give greater direct control over future missions and attacks on groups and territories. Once ground forces are stronger, it will allow for greater communication between forces on the ground and forces conducting drone strikes and other attacks and create a way for special operations to conduct raids to collect intelligence, kill or capture leaders, and reduce the amount of territory ISIS holds (Brands, Feaver …show more content…
The current foreign policy includes a military strategy of airstrikes, drone attacks, and training ally forces to fight on the ground. The ultimate goal of this policy is the defeat of ISIS. Unfortunately, current U.S. policy is failing to do so because it is not aggressive enough to stop the ability of ISIS to capture new land and gain new fighters. A more aggressive policy must be implemented that puts U.S. troops on the ground to fight alongside allied troops. A stronger military approach will give the United States more control over strategy and successes. Putting more troops on the ground will allow the U.S. to more directly advise missions, control attacks, and allow for greater sharing of intelligence. This will ultimately give the U.S. greater capability to capture and kill ISIS leaders and halt the growth of the organization. Unfortunately, this approach will put the lives of many more U.S. soldiers in danger and could require an indefinite commitment of U.S. troops in the Middle East. However, the potential cost of the lives of these soldiers will save the lives of many innocent civilians both in the present and in the future and both in the Middle East and the United States. Furthermore, regardless of the strategy adopted, including the current policy, fighting ISIS could go on indefinitely. After all, it has already gone on for three years with no end in sight. It is surely worth
During ISIS’s rise to power, there have been several key players, which have influenced the growth or decline of its movement. The center of Gravity (COG) for ISIS has been its ability to recruit volunteer foreign fighters from around to engage in its caliphate. In addition, local people from Iraqi, Syrian, and other Nations have been key players because of ISIS’s efforts promote fear and violence against their family or communities. Sunnis and Shia countries focused on regional power and security. Furthermore, the U.S. and its 70 Allies through Operation Inherent Resolve Campaign aim to defeat ISIS and promoting regional stability. The last key players are rival terrorist franchises or organizations like AQ, Taliban, Al Shabaab, and Hamas
Isis has 30,000 fighters( “Isis trail of terror”). February 2015, Isis had 20,00 more foreign fighters who had come to help( “Isis trail of terror”). Not including 150 from the United State. Isis is spreading into Syria, Iraq, and towards Baghdad tormenting the sick, and killing people till they decide to join their side ( “Isis trail of terror”).Obama said, “ Let's be clear about Isis, they have rampaged across cities beheading people in cowardly acts of violence.”( “Isis trail of terror”). Isis is growing bigger and bigger each second, and only we can stop it.
The United States, with its coalition partners, has committed to degrade and destroy the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This group poses a threat to the people of the Middle East, as well as to the United States, our allies, and interests in the region. If this terrorist organization is left uninterrupted, ISIL will grow, threatening the surrounding areas of the Middle East, our allies abroad, and the United States.
ISIS has been a rapidly increasing threat to not just the United States of America, but the entire world. ISIS has done countless brutal, sick, heart wrenching things that have caused a national and international uproar in the citizens of numerous countries. ISIS considers them the Islamic State, and they seem to have many motives. They basically want a large portion of the Middle east under ISIS control and for the rest of the world to accept their disgusting “traditions” as they claim they are doing, This threat has done some very unspeakable things; the problem needs to be solved. Considering the view the United State holds right now, there are a few actions that can be taken to reduce this threat that ISIS presents. ISIS has rapidly become an enormous problem for most of, if not all of the world. There are some very simple and some very complicated ways to solves this problem. The most efficient way is to simple go to war with ISIS and physically, mentally and emotionally destroy everything and everyone that is supporting this cause, another way is to give them what they desire to have, finally the last option is just completely ignore the foreign issue until it presents itself on U.S. soil. After an online video emerged on Tuesday, January 21st, 2015, showing ISIS threatening to kill two Japanese hostages, relatively little was known about the relationship between the two prisoners. But Reuters News revealed later that next day
I believe that the United States should use other military forces from other countries to help eliminate ISIS because not only are they becoming a serious problem, but the youth from many countries are leaving home and/or disappearing because they feel the need to help in this movement, and in reality they have no idea what they are signing themselves up for. So in turn the United States should turn to these other countries for help, in the best way
To understand this subject and cover all the aspects of it, we need to look to every simple and small details very carefully to find out what strategy will help us to win the war. Also, what make this effort success. It’s the view of administration on this war, can we end this endless war? When President Obama took the office, he wants to end this war. Changing the rule to more transparency, more ethical, and counterterrorism policies nimbler (Jessica Stern 2015-62). Since US army, military forces, agencies, and coalition forces left Iraq. There was a big gap in power, authority, and civil war going on. However, this wasn’t something new, it was going for ears but in small scale. Once US left Iraq in December 2011. That leaded to free movement of terrorist groups and fighter in middle east, especially Iraq and Syria. The military action is the cure for this vacuum now. “When the IS advance was stalled by coalition air strikes later this summer, IS militants and equipment melted into urban landscapes, operated at night, and distributed their forces into smaller tactical units, while limiting unsecure cell phone and radio communications. They deployed mines and improvised explosive devices to deny mobility and frustrate counter-offensives by Iraqi and Kurdish forces in Tikrit and Jalawla. Mines proved an especially effective means to passively control key areas because they are not vulnerable to airstrikes. Removal requires time-consuming and dangerous clearance techniques
President Obama’s strategic plan in Iraq and Syria is to continue Airstrikes to slow the forward progression of ISIS, while utilizing deployed U.S. service members to work with coalition partners to assist with partner building capacities. These partners include “Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and moderate Syrian fighters, and both Sunni and Shia militia groups.”3 To be successful in this endear as mentioned by Sec Carter, “the only way to have a lasting defeat of ISIL is to have someone who can govern and secure territory once ISIL is defeated, a local force on the ground. That 's why the strategy calls for the United States to help train and equip, and then help enable local ground forces.”4 Without basic security the Government of Iraq (GOI)
As of today, 6,845 Americans have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and over 900,000 Americans have been injured in both wars. (Goodman 1) Sending those troops over to these places to fight will just cause more damage. How much more lost lives does it take for the government to realize that the places they are sending these troops over to is not getting anywhere. The U.S just keeps going up a hill that never ends, instead of going up they are rolling down it. Digging a bigger hole for the U.S to get buried in. The great leaders in American history learned from the mistakes of the past. It is something we ought to remember when it comes to sending ground troops to remove the Islamic State group. Although ISIS needs to be defeated, the President should
In order to formulate a policy against ISIS, there must to be an understanding regarding how ISIS came to be and what its motives are. ISIS is a terrorist organization that began as al-Qaeda in Iraq. In time, ISIS split from al-Qaeda for ideological differences, mainly because ISIS wanted to control large areas of land in order to establish a caliphate. In the past year ISIS became increasingly violent, and started being stricter with the regions they hold under their control, such as beheading people, and burning them alive. Now ISIS controls an area roughly the size of the United Kingdom in Iraq and Syria. ISIS’ main objective is to establish a caliphate where they can follow Islam to its strictest interpretation.
They have people from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Northern American ISIS is a threat to global peace and people globally, that is why it not only up to the Iraqi and Syrian government to eradicate them. Although it is clearly not just an American problem, America still needs to step in and aid others trying to end ISIS. America should not launch a full-fledged military campaign, it would exhaust resources (Cronin). What America needs to do to defeat ISIS is continue with a limited military campaign and major diplomatic efforts. The only way to defeated ISIS is to contain them, they need to be suffocated of their resources, technology, ammunition, and weapons. Obama supports this thought, he stated although they were not a real threat right now, they could be if left unchecked. America needs to continue with airstrikes. They have proved effective, their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was deathly injured during an USA led in March this year. Although this would not kill ISIS it is a huge step forward. ISIS has lost plenty of land in Iraq, they are not completely disappearing yet though, but this is why America needs to continue to work with the Iraqi government and military. Recently, America held a meeting with world leaders to discuss what should be done to fight ISIS back. ISIS is not only trying to target America, they are trying to challenge international order, that is why America and worldwide leaders need to work together to stop ISIS. Every major government should stiffen the arms embargo on ISIS. The great news about this is that no government supports ISIS, they have made enemies with almost
Some believe that a long term solution to the ISIS threat can only be solved by trying to implement deep and lasting political changes in Iraq and Syria. Although at this point implementation of such objectives could not happen fast enough to answer the urgencies that surround ISIS's threat, an additional counter attack that could slow down the movement enough until a better solution can be devised. Such military strikes could start to provide moderate relief until ISIS can mount a counterattack. However, the considerable damage that ISIS will veritably endure will be sure to generate resentment and negative scrutiny against the United States. Another risk that the United State faces is the possibility of ISIS expanding so much that they take over control of the Middle East as a entire entity thus posing significant financial and military threats. If the United States does not plan to leave the Middle East completely and for good, they must find a way to quickly tame the beast that is ISIS. But if the United States does plan on keeping positive relations with any aspect of the Middle East they must face ISIS head
Imagine a country that is run by insane government officials with a military consisting of blood crazed and psychopathic soldiers who conquer land by force and murders anyone that does not agree with their values or beliefs. You might think that this thought could be the center of a suspenseful film, but sadly this is a case that takes place right now in reality. One could compare these actions to Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, or the Soviet Union but those countries are long gone and are not committing such crimes today. Right now, at this moment, today’s “Nazi Germany” is the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, more commonly known as “ISIS”, is the country that is committing war crimes, violating international law, and promotes rape and sexual slavery today at this very moment. Therefore, I believe it is the United States’ duty and moral obligation to launch a full-scale military ground force to fight and eliminate all forces of the Islamic State.
Something that the U.S. should do is dispatch more special operations forces and more aircraft. Having army rangers, selected trained military intelligence units, civil affairs, etc. over to defeat the Islamic state is going to be a lot more effective. There has to be an increase in the size of the U.S. force. It would be a united team of logistical, intelligence, and security force. They will all be working with the Iraqi security force. This method could have really good results but it also has its negative. By enforcing the military force and security in Iraq specially in Mosul, it will send a message to the people that they are not left behind. Also, the Islamic State will receive the message loud and clear that they are about to be defeated.
One of the most prominent issues in the United States is the ongoing war against ISIS. It is an issue that has earned international attention and has affected an extremely wide range of countries and their policies. There is no easy answer To solving such a complicated issue but it should start by looking at the past.
In December of 2011, the United States withdrew all remaining combat troops from Iraq. After eight years of war, the United States turned the responsibility for the defense of Iraq over to the Iraqi security forces. Iraq immediately saw the rise of sectarian violence among Sunnis and Shia. This nation also saw the reemergence of the insurgency known as Al Qaeda in Iraq in the northwest portion of the country. The problems in Iraq grew with the igniting of a civil war in the neighboring nation of Syria. This civil war allowed for members of Al-Qaeda in Iraq to spread to and develop in an unstable area and emerging as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS. Within twelve months, ISIS grew by creating of an organizational structure, engaging in violent military campaigns, developing an economy and establishing successful recruitment techniques. ISIS now controls large swaths of territory in both northwest Iraq and Eastern Syria. Political leadership in the United States is now debating what action should be taken to combat the terror group ISIS. To prevent ISIS from harming our national security, to stop the threat of international terrorism and to stop the destruction of Iraq and its people The United States should send ground troops to Iraq to combat ISIS.
