ISIS (Islamic state of Iraq and Levant) is an extremely well-known terrorist organization that is currently led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. ISIS is an organization that was founded in 1999, although since then has adopted many new names. In fact, it’s original name was ISI, and ISIS is just it’s most recent. It is estimated that there are about 17,000 members of the group, approximately one hundred of them being Americans (“An Overview of ISIS”). ISIS’s main mission is to create an Islamic state, or caliphate. After hearing just a few facts about ISIS some may ask themselves, “What really is ISIS, how did it come to power, and what is their true motive for violence?” The first concept that should be known is how this organization really began …show more content…

One of those characteristics is being sexist and not treating women and children the same. ISIS criticizes the rights that women of the western parts of the world have, specifically meaning the women of the United States. ISIS believes that women should be homemakers, wives, and mothers, and not be free to do whatever they please. Recently however, ISIS has been recruiting women to fight with them so they have more fighters (Saul). This definitely shows signs of ISIS coming around to letting women have equal rights. ISIS believes that children should be recruited for the “next fighters.” Many times members of ISIS will trick children into joining by telling them they would be pure muslims if they joined (“Children of ISIS”). Overall, ISIS knows that it is easy to use children’s innocence against them. Ultimately, ISIS …show more content…

Some of these attacks have been small, while others have been tremendous. For example, in November of 2015, ISIS attacked Paris. “In a series of attacks, bombers and shooters terrorized the streets of Paris, killing 130 people” (History.com). More recently, in May of 2017, a single ISIS member terrorized an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in England. This attack killed 22 people and injured somewhere around 250 people. To add on, in December of 2016, a member hijacked a truck and drove into a Christmas marked in Berlin. This killed 87 people including himself. In July of 2016, a terrorist drove a truck in the French Riviera town killed 86 people by mowing down a crowd of people. Although the list goes on and on, one other attack that ISIS committed was in June of 2016 when “a gunman opened fire inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., and killed 49 people” (History.com). Those are just a few of the attacks that ISIS has perpetrated but there is no sign that shows the world is anywhere close to being safe from these
