ISOLATION OF TRIMYRISTIN FROM NUTMEG
The purpose if the experiment was to extract the Trimyristan from ground nutmeg using extraction, distillation and recrystallization procedures. This experiment involves extraction and separation techniques that yield a purified product. The product was extracted and a distillation process was used to remove any remaining solvent. The recrystallization of the sample in turn produced a pure sample, which was proven using the known melting points of the isolated product. Our outcome led us to a 28 percent recovery of the product.

The remaining crystals were washed with ice-cold acetone and, once again, allowed to dry. The mass of the recrystallized Trimyristan was found to be 3.98 grams. An attempt was made to place the final product into a capillary tube to determine melting point. This proved a bit of a challenge, possibly due to moisture in the sample.
