What Drives?
Determination was helpful in the characters in reaching their goal. It was what drove the characters from Demosthenes and Icarus and Daedalus to achieve their goals in the face of daunting challenges and seemingly insurmountable defeat. Determination was also the source of motivation, even inspiration, one would need in order to accomplish something or keep on trying.
In the myth, Demosthenes by John Haaren, Demosthenes’s determination toward accomplishing his goal of becoming a lawyer was critical. One way determination was helpful in Demosthenes trying to reach his goal was that he was able to overcome his oral difficulties. According to the text, it states that “…to improve his voice he spoke with stones in his mouth, and to

One way determination was helpful in Icarus and Daedalus trying to reach their goal was that the determination to accomplish this goal was what led Daedalus to build wings that they needed to escape. According to the text, Daedalus “…fashioned two great wings like those of a bird”, inspired by the sea-gulls outside who were “sure of [their] liberty”. Determination made Daedalus inspirited to innovate and find a way to escape. A second way determination was helpful in Icarus and Daedalus trying to reach their goal was that one of the factors that drove Icarus and Daedalus to fly away was determination. Without their determination, Icarus and Daedalus would not have been able to escape the tower, which would have resulted in a very different ending. For example, if Icarus and Daedalus did not fly, they would have stayed in prison until they died or the king instructed the guards to release them. A third way determination was helpful in Icarus and Daedalus trying to reach their goal was that determination was also helpful in the sense that it made Icarus and Daedalus have hope and the belief that they could succeed in escaping. As stated in the text, it was a challenge to escape: “… [He] managed to escape from his cell; but it seemed impossible to leave the island, since every ship that came or …show more content…
One way determination plays into the outcome of both plays into the outcome of both texts is that because of their determination (and the motivation with it), the characters were all able to accomplish their goal in the end. In Icarus and Daedalus, both father and son were able to escape, as stated in the text, “…quench the thirst of his captivity…” and in Demosthenes, Demosthenes was able to become more than a lawyer at the end; in the text, it states that “He soon acquired great influence in Athens and became one of the ten official orators.” A second way determination plays into the outcome of both texts in a similar way is that determination was what made the characters not give up until the end. Without the determination they had, both Icarus and Daedalus and Demosthenes would not have kept on persisting to push the limits that eventually made them succeed in fulfilling their goal (Demosthenes did this by doing hard training, while Daedalus did this by building wings). A third way determination plays into the outcome of both texts in a similar way is that determination was what made each character dedicated, which makes the end happen. In both stories, the determination of each character had an important role that led to the end of the story. In Icarus and Daedalus, both characters’ perseverance leads to them escaping but because of the small lack in Icarus’s (determination), he drowns,
One of the reasons that the main theme of this novel is perseverance is because it teaches you determination.
Determination oftentimes makes us who we are as a person. It is something that is embedded deep inside the human nature. Determination is essentially the “steering wheel” of a person. It is up to the “driver” whether they want to take the effortless street or the harsh road on the mountain. Those who take the more challenging road usually results into a better reward and feeling in contrast to the boring and usual road. Humans, like any other species, would prefer to take the path of least resistance. This is not the case in this topic, it is that humans should be determined to succeed in something, because without determination, nothing would be achieved.
Motivation is something that we as human beings all possess. There is obvious levels of motivation, these levels make a substantial difference between a regular Joe and a multi-billion dollar executive. What drives a person to reach his/her full potential is motivation, whether good or bad. Sometimes tragedy as awkward as it may sound will provide
| If a person is motivated by an interest in changing things and influencing others.
Determination is a driving force. For me, the determination to succeed has been my greatest ambition. I have strove to push my limits; to surpass even own my expectations. My determination to succeed has been the leading factor in everything I do for the larger portion of my life. I was determined to pass high school with fantastic grades. I was determined to ace every test and every paper. I was determined to get accepted into Arkansas State University. I am determined to become a doctor and help others. I am determined to be something bigger; to have something much greater.
You have to be determined to become successful and if you won’t be successful in life if you give up easily. Determination keeps you focused on the big picture and makes you excerpt all of your effort to reach your goal. Suzanne Collins uses characterization to set the theme of the story that you can do anything you set your mind to. Determination is what got all of the successful people in this world to where they are
Determination drives people to undertake a mission that could change their lives. Rikki-Tikki risked his life just to keep his new family safe from danger; Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg so that her mother and her can be free from Afghanistan, a war country; Cap walked the Klondike through cruel weather in order to keep a promise to a late friend. Farah Ahmedi was determined to escape the war in her city, Rikki-Tikki wanted to keep is family safe and Cap wanted to keep his promise in order to feel relief, they all had a mission to reach their goal.
With this quote, it shows Icarus’ immaturity, foolish and playfulness when it comes to his father’s inventions and his life. Icarus is a young boy which is evident from the quote above because he is playing with the wax and watching and admiring his dad. If it was an older boy, he’d probably be off by himself or helping his father with his inventions instead of playing with the wax in the wings. Icarus is an innocent boy who doesn’t understand the importance of being responsible. Not being responsible leads him to his death, which could have been avoided if he had paid attention to what his father had told him. Icarus got swept up in the moment when he was flying, and lost all of his thoughts which lead him to the mistake of flying too high.
Motivations are what create and drive the plot. In each plot type, certain motivations cause characters to act and this motivation is the basis of a story. Booker uses Carl Jung's theory of archetypes and symbols to support his project. Christopher Booker
“The truest characters of ignorance are pride and arrogance. This quote by Samuel Butler is truer than gold in the two greek myths Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus. The protagonists of both stories boastful, arrogant and prideful natures lead them to their agonizing deaths and downfall. The two myths would be lifeless and stale without the use of of literary elements like conflict, imagery, and and characterization. Conflict shapes the story,Imagery foreshadows and provides color, and characterization develops the characters personalities and behaviors. These elements are how the authors were able to teach the lesson in the theme. The two stories’ main characters, Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus share the same moral theme of a prideful disregard from those elder and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences, existing thanks to these literary elements.
The flaws in this story are many, but I will focus my efforts on six points. First, we learn that Daedalus was imprisoned and King Minos’ men carefully watched the land and sea. This, of course, led Daedalus to the brilliant idea to escape by flight. Momentarily accepting a human’s ability to fly, let us consider
Personal motivations allow people to do what needs to be done without the influence from other people or situations. Everyone has their own motivations that help them to accomplish everyday tasks. In the drama, Twelve Angry Men, by Reginald Rose, Juror Eight is motivated by his desire to know the truth and courage to stand alone.
In Daedalus, the author promotes the tone of mournfulness. As the story begins, the tone is shown by Daedalus personality. The author says:” The next instant, horrified at what he had done, he rushed down to the boy.” (1)As the story continues, the mourning tone is expressed through analogy. The author states:” The king was so afraid Daedalus would reveal the secret of Labyrinth that he would not let him leave the island.”(2) Towards the end, mournfulness is clearly shown by diction. The author describes:” There, on the lonely island which bears the boy’s name, Daedalus buried his only son.”(3) Overall, the author’s tone of mournfulness reinforces the idea that you can make poor choices and you can still be a good person.
Motivation is the reason or purpose behind action, or what causes one to act in
According to Tracy (2012), your character; one of ambition and drive to excel, pushes you on an onward path towards success because the more an individual desires to exceed, he will put into play the actions that will guarantee that level of success.
