Innovation in ICT and its impact on the society has been astounding. It is considered to be “crucial for economic activity” (Jorgenson and Vu, 2007) as it not only “increases productivity and boost economic growth,” (Jorgenson et al, 2008) but “generates complementary innovations that improve economies ' total factor productivity.” (Ceccobelli et al, 2012)
3D printing is where a “three-dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers of material that adhere to one another, creating a three-dimensional output.” (Kurt and Colegrove, 2012) It has the ability to “turn digital files created on a CAD or CAM program into physical objects.” (Hoffman, 2015) MakerBot Replicator is a typical example of a product that uses 3D printing. (Figure 1)
The Replicator uses 1.75mm polylactic acid (PLA) filament. Various colors are available, meaning that lots of flexibility is given as to the final look of the product that’s printed.
As its software, MakerBot Desktop software is used. This allows individuals to “save files in a personal Library that you’ve created, printed, or want to print; find new objects in the Thingiverse to print; and access instructional and troubleshooting videos.” (Hoffman, 2015) In other words, it’s software that enables you to manage and print objects.
Aside from the main software, individuals can also “print from a computer over a USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi connection, as well as over Wi-Fi from an iOS or Android phone or tablet with the MakerBot…
