Medea, a play developed by Euripides, depicts a woman who has been betrayed by her husband. The main character whom the play is named after, Medea is a known sorceress who obtains her revenge with little compassion and a storyline that will leave the reader in disbelief. I chose Medea because she reflects not only feminism, but dedication. Often, women in this era were expected to stay at home, live punitive lives, and be at the will of their husbands every need. She does not do this, instead she stands up for her beliefs and as a character in the time period this play was composed showed that women can be strong as well.
What does Medea want? As a female character, Medea is typically expected to want nothing, yet she supersedes this social expectation in seeking revenge for what she has lost. Jason, her husband, was the center of her live and the one thing she desired. In the background portion of this play, the reader learns that Medea uses her powers to assist Jason in various adventures and later flees her home of Colchis to be with Jason and in the process, takes her brother’s life and that when they get to the home of Jason in Iolcus, they are banished because she used her powers to manipulate the princesses into killing the king. Medea gave up her old life in order to be with Jason and after learning about his affairs with King Creon’s daughter goes ballistic. From the beginning of the play the conflict between good and bad where Medea and Jason are concerned has been ambiguous. Both characters have done terrible things in order to attain what they want. Nothing could stand in the way of them including Medea’s father, whom Medea betrayed and to pile on the grieve she kills her brother and drops parts of him into the sea so as to delay her father thereby ensuring that Jason and his Argonauts could fulfil their quest to attain the Golden Fleece. Once she learns that Jason has married another woman, Medea's personality turns completely around. The strong loving wife turns into a barbarian huntress in search of revenge. After plotting and changing the course of her revenge a few times, she perpetrates an attack that will certainly kill the new bride. Her method is focused on the woman, but it may or may not affect others around her target. Medea knows that the poisoned dress and head adornment will be lethal to Jason's bride, but she cannot possibly know what will come of Jason, their children, or the king. Her rage knows no bounds and she sends Antigone and Ismene on with the poisoned gifts. Which is what led her to the conclusion of killing her own children, knowing that this will hurt Jason the most, even over being murdered. Because men primarily care about family lineage and Medea ended Jason’s family forever with this heinous act. All these events portray Medea as a fearsome sorceress that will not tolerate being taken advantage of. Her traits of power and strength come during the scene when she is about to kill her children and is indecisive; but in the end her anger towards Jason overpowered her love of the children and she murders them. In the last scene of the play when she is above Jason in a godly chariot pulled by snakes the audience gets a sense of her cleverness and how she is different from other female characters. She will not risk being captured and was always two steps ahead of Jason the whole time. This is far different than what is usually expected, because the hero is defeated by a woman and she leaves without any sort of punishment.
