Throughout the whole novel, Charlie battle his internal thoughts, a result of the tragic accident of his Aunt Helen and the suicide of his best friend Michael. Whenever Charlie feels like he is accepted he then loses it all at once and throughout the novel he fears showing his true identity because he doesn’t to feel lonely as he had before. He constantly alters himself to be accepted by a group, but this is the first time in his life where his friends accept him for what he truly is. For instance, after he gets into an argument with his girlfriend and he has to leave his group of friends for some time he then claims, “I don’t know how much longer I can keep going without a friend.
