In Regarding Henry, Henry Turner, an established lawyer and unforgiving husband is shot twice during a robbery. He is shot in the head and the heart, cutting off some oxygen supply to his brain. Once he awakes from his coma, he really is transformed from a selfish, mean man when he was controlled by his id, to a giving and sweet man, now controlled by his super ego. Henry's natural state is his selfish, id state.
Beginning with basically the first scene, Henry shows many signs of his id controlling him. He yells at his daughter, and seems to have a super-ego scene where he feels sorry for her, but he's simply doing it out of obligation. He is very negative and rude and only cares about himself. It's found out later that the court case he won, he did it unfairly. He's deep into an affair. He is begging for a reality check.

Throughout his recovery he meets a new friend named Bradley and barely remembers anything, including his own family. Therefore, he gets a clean slate and gets to replace his personality with new experiences. The most influential person in his new life is Bradley. He is very pivotal in shaping Henry's new persona, now shaped by superego. He really cares for people and cherishes his family. Since he doesn't remember his old cheating, lying, rude ways, he's able to just be nice to everyone. He quickly learns what is socially desirable and practices those ideas. He also does a complete turn from his old habits. He quits his job because of their wrong ways of conducting business. He even lies about his memory of things and makes up something on the spot to comfort his daughter who is nervous about her school. He becomes selfless, and an example of good morality by society's
He is a very close character but he is also the leader of the debating group. Henry applies past knowledge to new situations, for example the way he was living and the struggle he goes through to create good arguments which help him, win all those debates. He also has a very sad side, another example is when he saw and African American being burned in the middle of the road which made him really sad and cause him to drink alcohol. His prior knowledge about the life he has makes him a great and intelligent
As previously discussed, Henry must make adjustments to his dreams as events pertinent to his life manipulate his goals. Henry never seemingly has the exact same life goal at any one point in the book, as he changes his mind from being a courageous soldier, to earning a red badge of courage, and so on. However, Henry never loses his ambition to continue and persevere through the hardships from his sacrifices. He subconsciously understands he will eventually achieve what he is looking for; he realizes it will take time and guidance from the realities of his life. Henry’s approach to life eventually allows him to achieve his dreams. “So it came to pass that as he trudged from the place of blood and wrath his soul changed. He came from hot plowshares to prospects of clover tranquilly, and it was as if hot plowshares were not. Scars faded as flowers” (Crane 130). This quote emphasizes the result of Henry’s life as he leaves his previous forfeits behind in order to finally obtain his goal inspiring happiness, which emphasizes the novel’s overall
This shows that Henry allows himself to now be a part of something bigger. This also shows that Henry lets himself become sucked in a bigger cause, to not to save himself but to but to save and help his other comrades. He loses his sense of being an individual completely, which cuts self-preservation out of his picture.
Regarding Henry is a film that introduces the effects and turmoil of physical trauma on the human brain. Henry Turner was shot in the head and chest by a mugger in a gas station. This altercation would completely reshape Turner’s outlook on his life. Henry began the film as a ruthless trial lawyer that was willing to do anything to help a client win their case. Henry’s natural state is his superego, but this is changed through his life experiences as a trial lawyer and dealing with the exhausting tasks of everyday life.
Regarding Henry is a movie about a successful lawyer who lives with his wife, Sarah and his daughter, Rachel. One night he goes out for a pack cigarettes and gets shot in his head, which causes him to lose all of his memory of everyone, even his family. He has to be put in rehabilitation to start trying to walk and talk again. This movie portrays the personality of Henry, the main character, fluctuating between his id and superego, and how he acts with individuals throughout the movie. In the beginning of the movie, Henry shows his id side; when his wife tells him to apologize to his daughter for yelling at her earlier for spilling something on his piano, but he never truly apologizes to her, he just lectures her about being a responsible
He first shows symptoms when Jan and Alex, his mother and his brother, come to visit him while he is away at school. They notice the early triggers such as his mistrust him clocks and technology, he takes his phone apart and explains how cell phones control society and he does not trust the use of them, along with clocks and telling time. He believes time is a false concept. Alex doesn’t see that his brother is not thinking clearly, and questions his logic with the clocks, explaining that they are just objects.Henry begins to get aggressive and confused. “Henry looked at them mushily, drawing his eyebrows together as if his mother and brother were in conspiracy not to understand him.”(Cockburn, page 17). Along with these triggers, he also heard voices from animals and trees telling him to do certain actions, Henry often felt forced to do things that he also didn’t want to do. Another example, the trees told him that he needs to strip down and jump down the Estuary, therefore he was actually never suicidal, but instead threatened by the inner voices in his head. Henry went through many episodes and was tormented by his symptoms and did many things wrong, even though he knew better.
Picture losing your memory after an incident that would change your life forever. That’s what Henry Turner, the main character in this book, went through. He’s a lawyer who undergoes change throughout his life when he survives being shot in the head and has to learn how to speak and do certain tasks again. In the beginning of the movie, Henry is a cold hearted person, but then transitions to being self-critical after the incident. Henrys natural state is Superego, because of his personality being so defiant.
Regarding Henry really is in many ways a psychologists wet dream. Being about a man who is a self-centered lawyer then is put into a coma and essentially reborn when he wakes up, becoming a completely different person in the process. Throughout the movie we very much see the childlike Id and societal Superego. The Id being shown through selfishness, playfulness and even acceptance. While the Superego is shown through responsibly, forgiveness and secrets. Henrys natural state, like all of ours according to Freud, is his Id.
In this movie, Henry Turner appears to be largely controlled by his id. One of the first big examples of this is when he leaves the house late at night by himself to go purchase cigarettes. Henry goes out at a dangerous hour because he feels the need for a cigarette and this is what results in him being shot. Another example of him using his id is when he lashes out at his caretaker, Bradley. Henry loves Bradley but when Bradley tries to tell him that it’s time to go back home Henry is overcome by emotions and lashes out. He screams at Bradley, which is very out of
The movie Regarding Henry is about an affluent, successful lawyer, named Henry Turner, that lives in New York City with his family. At the beginning of the movie, Henry is selfish and uncaring for others, however, one night Henry goes to a convenient store to get a pack of cigarettes. What Henry does not realize, is the the store is being robbed at gunpoint and Henry gets frustrated that the clerk will not give him a pack of cigarettes. Henry’s selfishness is what gets him shot twice, due to the fact that he is too greedy to not give up his wallet for his well-being. When Henry wakes up from his coma, he does not remember his family or his personality, which is the start of his transition from Id to Superego. As he continues to recover, his personality changes dramatically from what it used to be. He becomes caring for other people as well as for their feelings, and wants to help people instead of hurting them. All this leads me to believe that Henry Turner’s natural state is the Superego and that the Id was learned over time as he became a lawyer.
In the beginning of the movie, “Regarding Henry”, Henry Turner resembles this selfish, driven, and ambitious man who is wealthy and preserves very little happiness. After he gets shot by a man in the store and recovers, he develops this new personality and becomes this sweet and lovable person saving his relationship with his family. The id represents the reservoir of instinctual and biological urges and the superego represents the source of conscience that inhibits the socially undesirable impulses of the id. Henry portrays a simple contrast between the selfishness of the Id and moralistic of the Superego.
He shaped the new Henry from “birth” forming him into a new and caring man. The next scene is when Rosela the maid made eggs and he instantly said that he does not like them. This is a memory from the rehab center when Bradley makes eggs with hot sauce and peppers in order to make him speak. He does
Before being taught how to behave like what is socially acceptable, children and babies act almost solely according to their Id. As they grow older, they acquire more social interaction, and seem to slowly form a Superego based on what is socially acceptable, among other things they are taught. The same scenario occurred when Henry lost his memory. At first, he was influenced primarily by his Id. As the movie goes on, and Henry relearns these social skills and gains new life experiences which contribute to the formation of his Superego.
In certain scenes we share in henrys confusion and shock at the events occuring around him, a testament to lynchs direction and jack nances perfomace. for most of the film henry is a passive character, alowing things to happen to him without his intervention to stop them, by the end of the film however he determines to free himself and does so in one of the more disturbing scenes of the
Not only did he engage in these specific behaviors but his character was filled with atrocious deeds that not only affected those around him but also led to his own death. Through it all, Henry attempted to kill his mother by pushing her off of a ledge and then tried to kill Mark by pushing and fighting him near that same ledge. In the end, Henry caused his own death as both him and Mark were hanging off of the cliff and holding on to each of his mother’s hands. Consequently she chose to save Mark and Henry died by falling off of the cliff and into shallow water.
