In interviewing, Ms. LaRenda Harrison, director of alternative education program for the Brookhaven Public schools, I was given the following information pertaining to the training that is used to introduce MS Code of Ethics and Standards of conduct process for new teachers and to update career teachers, Ms Harrison stated that the MS Code of Ethics and Standards are covered in new teacher orientation before the beginning of the school term. Once school is in session, building level administrators are to review standards with new and career teachers. This review also provides update information to career teachers if any changes occurred. Listed below is a brief summary of the ten standards found in the MS Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct:
Standard 1: Professional Conduct- An educator should demonstrate conduct that follows generally recognized professional standards.
Standard 2: Trustworthiness- An educator should exemplify honesty and integrity and does not engage in deceptive practices regarding official policies of the district or educational institution.
Standard 3: Unlawful Acts- An educator should abide by federal, state, and local laws and statues, as well as local school board policies.

The code of ethics is for the state of Texas is found in the Texas Administrative Code under the 247.2 rule, more commonly known was the code of ethics and standard practices for Texas educators. The code of ethics is a guideline that tells the administraion how to conduct themselves in the work place. This is put into place to let teachers know how to behave in general and towards students and colleagues. All standards of the code of ethics are to be practiced regularly.
To establish a respectful professional relationship it’s important that we communicate well and offer each other help and support where needed. “You should use language that other adults (including parents/carers, colleagues, volunteers or students) are likely to understand, avoid using jargon or technical language unless you are sure they understand its meaning.”(T Kamen 2010 pg.71) Whether you are speaking to a colleague, parent/carer or someone from another profession it’s important that you are practical, you may be working with someone who is unfamiliar to the surroundings or need help to find things, also make sure you are informative, you may need to give information and support to someone regarding an issue or situation they know nothing about, act in a professional manner by demonstrating personal courtesy and integrity it’s never appropriate to “gossip” .Being Emotional have a sense of humour where appropriate being caring and understanding to peoples situation. Developing and promoting good effective relationships with the people you work with helps to maintain a positive learning environment for pupils, parents/carers and also staff.

It is important to establish appropriate behaviour and respect for others in order to fully realise the potential of all within and to ensure each student is safe from both physical and psychological harm. Appropriate behaviour must apply to both student and teacher. I, as a teacher, must follow a Code of Practice in order foster individual growth and learning. The principles of Good Practice are to treat people with care, respect and dignity. To recognise that I, as a teacher, am a trusted representative of my work place. I must ensure communication with students is open and clear and assess the risks to my students of the activities by carrying out a thorough risk assessment before each session.
There are five propositions that the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards has listed, which are Proposition 1: Teachers are Committed to Students and Their Learning, Proposition 2: Teachers Know the Subjects They Teach and How to Teach Those Subjects to Students, Proposition 3: Teachers are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning, Proposition 4: Teachers Think Systematically about Their Practice and Learn from Experience, and Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Learning Communities. The five propositions are similar to the code of ethics that are set up for teachers. The first proposition discusses the commitment that teachers are to have for their students learning. It’s main focus is that the student are treated equally and they are given the chance to learn. The National Board for Professional Teacher Standards (1987) stated “They believe all students can learn”. This statement is very crucial for teachers to understand, because if we give up on our students they will eventually give up on themselves. Proposition two discusses how teachers must know their content and how to deliver their content. Knowing your content is a must when you are a teacher, but if you don’t know how to deliver the information to your students you are back at square one. Effective teachers will also demonstrate appropriate planning, preparing and execution of content. Standard 5 is focused on Middle Level Professional Roles. Along with understanding and applying knowledge of young adolescents, as discussed with Standard 1, it is equally important to be an advocate for the students. By using professional leadership strategies, being an advocate for all young adolescents helps maximize their growth and learning. In order to be fully effective, working closely with family member and also with the community strengthen the ability to achieve this success.
