First and foremost, the two sides are aware of the arguments that the other presents and provide a counter argument with their own thoughts on the matter. For example, Sowell demonstrates his knowledge of the Arizona Sentinel newspaper by bringing up the idea of Amnesty in his essay and countering what is said about it in the Arizona Sentinel newspaper. In the Arizona Sentinel newspaper, it asks the question, “but what’s wrong with granting amnesty to hard-working, tax-paying individuals whose only crime is immigration status” (Arizona Sentinel)? This is countered in Sowell’s paper when he says, “…illegal immigrants must "earn" their citizenship. But if an ordinary American citizen gets a traffic ticket, the law is not going to just forget …show more content…
Each paper while providing some very good evidence also has its fair share of less than great evidence. For instance, the Arizona Sentinel says that most illegal immigrants are law-abiding citizens other than the fact that they themselves are illegal. This claim not only contradicts itself as illegal immigration is a crime no matter how to look at it, but a further look shows that this may not be true. A person cannot simply just say that other than robbing or murdering someone they are a law-abiding citizen. In the essay, it even claims that illegal immigration is a crime. It does not help prove its point by saying that they commit crime to begin with. It also claims that because they are law-abiding they will help drive crime down. The claim itself makes little sense as just increasing the amount of people who do not commit crime will not result in less crime. The people who commit crime are still going to do it regardless of how many people do not. Also, the act of illegal immigration is considered a crime which would only make the crime rate higher. Even the statistics used to support the claim does not work very well. After doing some research on Politifact website, it revealed that illegal immigrants in 2014 accounted for up to 75% of federal crimes (politifact.com). The essay would leave one to believe that it was less than it is. Not only that, but the evidence only mentions the 14% in state prisons and 5% in federal prisons. This does not account for immigrants who have not been caught illegally entering the country. All the claims made underline one point, the fact that most illegal immigrants do not commit crime, but the argument falls flat. This is certainly one of the weaker points of the paper compared to the rest and with different wording and better evidence can make a valid
In “Illegal Immigrants Do Not Harm America’s Economy,” Brian Grow and his colleagues, reporters for Business Week, argue that rather than damaging it, illegal immigrants actually help the economy by paying taxes and advancing general economic growth. The writers are responding to claims that illegal immigrants receive unwarranted negative attention for supposed drains on public services. They also address the fact that, despite possible legal ramifications, companies hire undocumented workers in higher numbers than ever before while the government seems to turn a blind eye. They speak of depressed wages, increased spending, and ambivalent government policies. Grow and the other writers try to
10). On the other hand, in the document “Overview- Illegal Immigration,” states that “immigrants take on hard and dangerous jobs that citizens will not do... [so] immigrants’ labor and entrepreneurship help to revitalize American industries and create more jobs than they take”( par. 10). Immigrants don’t actually take jobs from American citizens, because many come to create their own businesses which create more job opportunities. Jacob G. Hornberger also said that “traditionally immigrants are among the hardest working and most energetic people in a society, which brings positive vitality and energy”(par20). People should be paid by their efforts, not by where their from. People also “believe that all illegal immigrants are, by definition, lawbreakers, and thus are more likely to commit other crimes as well. Others link immigration with the illegal drug trade”(par. 9), as stated in the document, “Overview Illegal Immigrants,”. Although immigrants are thought to be the bad guys, immigrant rights activist Anne Carr argues that “immigrants commit crimes as often as American citizens, a fact true of both legal and illegal immigrants” (par.8). In the document, Immigration is not increasing crime rates they inform us that, there have been dozens of national
When this project was first introduced, I already knew that I was going to do a topic on immigration connecting to the American Dream. Illegal immigrants, especially is a very sensitive, personal, and passionate subject for me due to my family ties. My father is an undocumented immigrant and would have been eligible for DACA, if the program was made aware to him at the time. I chose DACA to do my project on because it's a pressing issue that I've seen a lot of media outlets covering but did not really know what the program does or the current situation of it. It sparked my interest and I wanted a topic that I could learn more about.
Immigration policies have had a tendency to violate human rights. These immigration policies, along with others, resulted in the global apartheid in the U.S. Some policies required more patrol enforcement at the border which made the journey for immigrants to the U.S. more rigorous. This enforcement has caused for immigrants to actually not look into migrating to the U.S. Also, with the local law enforcement working together with the border patrol has resulted into a huge problem, racial profiling. In racial profiling, even though there are immi-grants from all over the world, Latinos are mostly targeted. The policies, while they have in-creased deportation rates, they have affected the deportee’s U.S. citizen children.
Even though all the stakeholders are concerned in solving the illegal immigration issues, there seems to be no agreement on the best strategy to be followed. However, all the stakeholders agree that border security needs to be enforced, employers of illegal immigrants punished and they also seem to agree that the illegal immigrants that have been in the country for some time now need to be allowed to work legally and pay back taxes and some fines to the government. The stakeholders listed for the immigration policy reforms include Senator Chuck Schumer of New York State and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida State, both from states with high percentages of the immigrant population. They were part of the eight Senators who drafted the comprehensive
Growing up in a mexican household, the topic of immigration has always been around me. It’s a more personal topic, having family that have dealt with the hardships to the path to citizenship and some that are still dealing with it. Many people in society have become prone to believe that immigrants will take all of their jobs in the United States. But the truth is granting illegal immigrants citizenship could actually benefit our economy and benefit everyone worried about this problem.
The next major issue addressed by a large number of Americans is healthcare. It goes without saying that a significant topic at the time of the Congressional turnover is the Affordable Care Act. This is another example of democratically legislative piece being pushed and opposed by a Republican voting body. Prior to the elections in November 2014, the President of the United States and the Senate acted according to Democratic Party ideology, while the sole source of power for Republicans, the House of Representatives, opposed their efforts in vain. Because Republicans only controlled one house of Congress, this meant that Democratic efforts were able to succeed and healthcare was opened up to many new citizens (citizens who had previously been
Due to the huge number of legal and illegal immigrants in the United States, there have been many debates and arguments about social effects that immigrants has brought upon the U.S. for instance, social services that immigrants can receive such as government benefits for low-income, families and individuals. After the attack on September 11th, the American public has been worried about what social effect that immigrants might have such as crime, national security, and other issues.
When Americans vote their choice for President, one would assume that these votes would be tabulated and the majority vote would win. But this is not the case at all. The Presidency is ultimately decided by the Electoral College, what William McClenaghan calls “one of the least understood parts of the American political process”(340). McClenaghan also defines the Electoral College as “the body that makes the formal selection of the nation’s President, from what the Framers intended into a `rubber stamp’ for the popular vote in presidential elections”(67). The original Electoral College did not succeed for very long, however; it only worked for as long as George Washington was President
They say in case of emergency situations you need to help yourself first then only you would be better able to help others. Getting time for one self and breaking the old patterns would be hard but what will happen to my family if I am not mentally, emotionally or physically healthy? I will reflect nothing else but only bad to them and this will make my condition even worse. The worse may happen when they will start making distance from me. Everybody likes people who are happy with positive attitude.
According to the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, U.S. immigration agents have targeted around 4000 Somali immigrants for deportation from the U.S. Most of these immigrants are not currently held in detention. Many who have now been targeted are those who have applied for asylum and whose requests for asylum have been rejected.
There are more than 10 million illegal immigrants living in the United Sates, and each day that number is increasing by 1,400 illegal aliens. An illegal immigrant is a foreigner who either illegally crossed an international political border, whether it was by land, sea or air, or whether it be a foreigner who legally entered a country but nevertheless overstayed their visa in order to live and/or work there. The two focal attractions that the illegal immigrants perceive in the U.S are superior job opportunities, and better living for their families. Several businesses in our Nation are eager to hire cheap, submissive manual labor from overseas. Such businesses are hardly ever penalized due to
There are millions of illegal immigrants in the United States, as Markon (2016) argues that illegal from South and Central America, Europe, and Mexico form the entire illegal immigrants between 10 million to 12 million in the United States. One of these illegal is my father, who came in 1996, he came to the U.S.A to work and searched the possibility to pay the many debts that he got in my country; in addition, my country had a big problem where there weren’t jobs and many banks had broken because the change from Sucre to the dollar. At that time, my father thought the only solution was coming here to get money and pay. Likewise, as my father, there are other undocumented immigrants that came from the same situation or by other reasons to this country. Present day, the actual president of the U.S is Donald Trump, who has been wanted that entirely illegal immigrants are deported to their own country since he made some line of attack against the illegal trough his campaign. Precisely Abdullah and Jaffe (2017) explain that the president Trump signed many executive orders in his first days of being president, one of these
According to the independent Center for Immigration Studies, in January 2000 there were 7 million illegal aliens living in the United States and the center estimated that number to grow by half a million a year (Peak, 2009, pg. 245). Based on this fact, the reality is that the minority has turn into a majority and has fulfilled the melting pot. Peak explains that ever since the incident of 9/11 the country has taken precaution and other measures to challenge in protecting borders. This even was a remarkable time of history for many citizens
“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is about Scout ( A naive narrator) who tells the story of her early childhood. This includes the story of a court case and about so told notorious icon. This book takes place in the 1930s in an old town called Maycomb, this town was nothing but perfect as it has a strong degree of judgment on appearance and what people were said to be. Through reading this book you'll understand not to judge people by their appearance, what they were said to be(rumor) or what they have done(action). You need to know them well before making assumptions about them. You might not know who they truly are unless you socialize with them for a while, judging people based on appearance or what they are said to be can impact the person who's being judged in big ways.Tom Robinson, Atticus and Arthur “Boo” Radley were all victims of judgment because of their appearance ,what people said about them or what they have done in the past or present.
