Immediate Career Goal

My short-term career goals are to complete my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, become a Licensed Professional Counselor, and provide trauma counseling in either a private practice or community-based setting. As a graduate student, my primary goal is to learn a wide range of techniques so that I can develop a therapeutic style that is effective, meaningful, and empirically supported. Counseling approaches such as Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy were all compelling to me when I completed Theories of Counseling as part of my Psychology degree. Elective courses offered through the CMHC program such as Theory and Practice of Reality Therapy and Body/Mind seem fascinating and I would love to learn to incorporate these concepts into my future practice. Additionally, counseling techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are areas I plan to learn more about as I progress through my education. What are your specific career goals for the future? How does this scholarship fit into your plans to achieve these goals?

I am intrested in gaining my Masters (MS) in Psychology to extend my knowledge within this field and make an impact in society. Graduate school will llow me to understand the human mind and how they all function individually. I aim to teach Psychology and become a Academic advisor at a collegiate level. While choosing a path during my undergraduate studies, I knew that anything I decided to do would make a impact in society and that has become my passion. While taking a few Psychology classes during my undergraduate studies, I was very intrigued with my class Social Psychology as it seemed to involve both Sociology being my major and Psychology. Throughout my professional career, I have had the privilege of leading, supervising and managing teams on many occasions. In each case, it was incumbent upon me to inspire and empower a group of individuals to work together, and obtain the cooperation of many contributing offices and subject-matter experts to ensure the success of a given project or service initiative. My experience as a liaison professional, coupled with my personal diplomacy skills, enabled me to communicate clearly and effectively, negotiate differences, and achieve consensus on a regular basis.

Helping in impoverished communities has been a goal of mine for many years now. I go on mission trips to Jamaica for two weeks at a time, every year, for the past three years. These mission trips have shaped me into the person I am today and they have also carved out the path in which I want to lead my life. For many years now, I have wanted to work in a place like Jamaica and provide medical care. This is obviously a long-term goal, because who would let an 18 year old give them medical advice? Having said that, I have a plan on how I am going to accomplish this goal. Built into this plan is many different short-term goals, but in the end my long-term goal is to become a doctor and work in developing countries like Jamaica.

My career goal is obtain my doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy. I would like to work with geriatric population because they are more vulnerable to disabilities from chronic illness that results in them being put into nursing facilities. I want to specialize my education on physical disabilities. I have experience working with the geriatrics patients who are physically disabled and I hope to help them keep their independence. My goal is to help geriatric patients gain valuable skills in order to keep their independence and have the ability to live at home. As an occupational therapist, I will help patients do things they want to do through therapeutic methods of everyday living. I would teach them news ways of doing daily actives after suffering from a disability. For example, a patient who had a stroke, I would reteach this individual how to hold items, how to button shirts, and so on. I would prefer to work at patients’ home or in a clinic setting; however, I am open to working wherever my skills would needed. Since I want to work in patients’ home, my main goal is to evaluate and change their home, so it is easier for them to stay independent. I have an interest in working with patients who have developmental delays; however, I need to observe an OT specialized in that field to know for certain if that is something I would like to specialize in.

As I graduate from high school, and enter into the next stage of my life, I have many aspirations and hopes for the future. This fall, I plan to embark on a new journey and start my undergraduate degree in kinesiology. I am excited to learn about my passions, and in the future I am looking forward to being able to help others and benefit their lives in a positive way.
