Is America really a land of opportunity? The United States experienced major waves of immigration during the colonial area from the 1880s to the 1920s. Many immigrants Came to America seeking greater economic opportunity, while some others such as the pilgrims in the early 1600s arrived in search of religious freedom. The first significant federal legislation restricting immigration was the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Throughout history America has been a land of opportunity but also a land of struggle because yes there were many jobs opportunities and freedom from deportation but people struggled with living conditions and unfair treatment. First of all America allowed immigrants many job opportunities. The Irish Immigration document …show more content…
Document H from the Immigration Executive Action packet states, "They would qualify for legal status under his plan. Ms. Ledezma sat quietly and cried. But Mr. Pina jumped to his feet. They both could now obtain legal documents and gain permits to work legally in the United States for the first time." This demonstrates that finally America has given an opportunity to those who just want to work hard and support their family in the best way without being deported and being able to work legally. The Executive Action gives hope for people like Ms. Ledezma and Mr. Pina to stay in America. In conclusion America is a land of opportunity because now undocumented immigrants can stop fearing deportation and work …show more content…
Document 3 from Living Conditions in Cities shows, "In rainy could let weather, and at night, the door must be closed, and then half dozen victims enclosed must breathe over and over again the poisonous air until they are themselves poisoned." This confirms that even though they had jobs, immigrants were still suffering with diseases from the tenements they lived in. Another piece of evidence comes from Italian Immigration to the United States, "The living conditions for the Italians tended to be overcrowded and filthy all over the U.S. They lived in dirty, cramped apartments and shared rooms." This clearly shows that immigrants were struggling with housing, they were living in disgusting apartments had difficulty living with numerous families. In all even though America has opportunities immigrants still struggled with living
Every person, or group of persons, has an identity and a culture tied to them from the country in which they grew up. An identity is the image someone present to the rest of the world, and culture is the image which one has of his/herself. Countries are similar to a person; over its history of being influenced by other countries, it has formed an identity and culture for itself. It has been stated that the worst act performed by others on another is to take away their identity, and deny them of their culture. Immigrants in America experience the loss of cultural norms/ values, cultural practices/ traits, adjustment to a new culture and changes in identity and concept of self. It is important to note that most immigrants are from minority groups.
Immigrants. America accepts about 1.5 million immigrants per year, creating 13.3% of our nation’s total population. Not surprisingly, these increase of immigrants is a good thing, with open arms we allowed the immigrants to have a better life than what they had before. Albert Einstein, a well known Physicist, emigrated to the US around the 1930’s from Germany after being a targeted by the Nazi’s. If America did not welcome Einstein into our Nation, he would have been killed and not be known as well as he is today. Yet there is two sides to this situation, America does live up to its ideal of “opportunity for all” or America does not live up to its ideal of “opportunity for all”. I believe America does live up to its ideal of “opportunity for all” because, America is
There are millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States, many of whom are Latinos. Americans today tend to believe that undocumented immigrants are: rapist, drug traffickers, live off the welfare and come to the United States to take American’s jobs. Indeed, American employers are hiring, so jobs are there, but the American people are not doing them. Therefore, someone must do the hard labor that no one wants. Many Latinos immigrate to the United States looking towards a better future for their families. They come with a positive perspective that their children are going to have a better life and are not going to experience any injustices. For many decades, white Americans have oppressed and marginalized undocumented immigrants because
Traditionally immigrants are faced numerous challenges on a daily basis. America is known as the place where there is a chances to succeed, a place where you can be free. Numerous Immigrants came to America with the goal that they could have a more noteworthy plausibility at prevailing in life. Settlers went out on a limb a when coming to America, for some it worked out well however for others they had a troublesome time here. Regardless of the battles that the outsiders experienced, for example, emerging from others, being isolated from their families, and breaking their way of life, the settlers are as yet thankful to be in America since they were in preferable conditions over they were in their country.
The drastic increase in immigration was seen as a problem for the Americans because they thought that the immigrants are stealing their jobs. This resulted into racial discrimination ranging from work to the personal lives of the immigrants. The labor at the industries consisted of skilled and unskilled laborers. Immigrants took the jobs that required unskilled labor as they were in financial need and do not have any experience working in the industries. No regulations were placed by the government for the treatment of laborers by the employers. So, the immigrant laborers worked in bad working condition and for low wages. Due to the low wages, the entire family, including children, had to work so that the basic necessities are fulfilled. Some jobs actually required for the children to work as they could perform small labor. For example, when Chairman asks Thomas O’Donnell about the mandatory child labor for employment of parents, he states that “There are so men in the city to work, and whoever has a boy can have work, and whoever has no boy stands no chance.” (Chairman, p.69). This shows how it was challenging for the immigrant parents to work without making their children work. The bad working conditions for laborers were great problem as well. The safety of laborers was put in jeopardy due to bad working
Day in and day out many immigrants enter the United States of America in search of greener pastures. This greener pasture includes higher educational prospects and lucrative jobs. However, life usually does not turn out as many of them usually anticipate. The expectation they usually have prior to their entry to the United States is partly due to the all rosary and nice things they hear about America. They hear such nice things from the media and also from diaspora’s who return from America to their homeland who usually don’t share their entire experiences with them. There have been quite a number of reports and research findings that outline the various challenges that are faced by immigrants in America. I personally share some of these issues as an international student in a foreign country. Prior to coming to Metropolitan State University, I had colleagues who told me about the school and their excellent environments that facilitate learning. Also other friends who were in America made me aware of the opportunity to work alongside schooling which made me more interested as I needed financial aid. With all these palatable information in mind, I did apply for the school and even though the tuition fee was quite expensive considering my socio economic background, I did apply having the mindset of working to meet up certain financial needs. Upon arrival in America, I realized that I was given a fraction of the entire picture. I wasn't allowed to work outside of campus,
One of the many reasons immigrants have moved to America is because of the large amount of job opportunities available to anyone looking for work. Which explains why America is called the land of opportunity. In “America and I” by Anzia Yezierska, a story about a woman moving to America to fulfill her dream of starting the life that she always wanted to live, she says “In the golden land of
Immigrants that came to America were pursuing a secure life for themselves and better lives for their children or future children; they envisioned America as the land of opportunity and a prosperous country in which to pursue any endeavor they chose, but no one recognized what was happening to the other half of the country and its citizens--the reality of the thousands of people living in the streets and going months without work--until they arrived. The idea was to come to America and find the American dream, but no one realized just how hard that would be until it was too late. There has always been a false premise of the American dream and the land of opportunity, and the immigrants discovered this the hard way.
In the past year, there has been a lot of coverage in the media about illegal immigrants coming into the United States. Illegal immigrants crossing the border into the United States became one of the topics mentioned in the recent presidential campaign. President Trump told his supporters that Mexico is dumping thousands of “bad people” into the US because they are drug dealers, rapists, and murderers (Walker, 2015). President Trump cited a recent murder of a young woman living in California as evidence that all illegal immigrants are bad. The woman was murdered by a man who was deported five times because he had a criminal record. Trump told his supporters that Mexico sent the man back into the United States
what is considered to be an immigrant to the united states? It 's a person that crosses the border illegally and that isn 't allowed to be part of the unites states unless they have permission to be here with a Visa. Society has given these people so many racial labels that 's beyond hurtful names they 're referred as wetbacks, Alien, and illegally immigrant, but what 's the right way to call these people without referring to them with all these racial characteristic and names that society has given them over the years. Society shouldn 't be labeling someone with racial names no human is an illegally. Yes, many of these people have come to the united states illegally. Many came from eastern and southern Europe such as the Irish, Germans, Italians and Polish. Immigrants came to America with hopes and dreams of prosperity, freedom of religion, freedom from fascism and dictatorship with the possibility of wealth and security. Many if not all of the immigrants encountered the complete opposite. Hard labor, poor living condition, low wages and illnesses were the problems often faced by the
During the course of society there are many social issues that arise within the community. As New York City is one of the most diverse society in population and cultures, many of our communities are facing issues that often affect the development of the society as a whole. Like many people who experience difficulties and need help, this help is provided by a network of agencies and organizations in the field of Human Servcices. Many Human Services organizations advocate for their community and their people to help provide efficient services for those in need. Workers in the Human Services field offer assistance in their community to help fight social issues as well as helping them cope with or solve everyday problems. In this paper I'll discuss a social issue among the immigrants in New York city. In that same case, a visited a Human Services agency that advocates and provide sources to help regarding this issue in the community for immigrants in New York City.

Not a long time ago, I came across an article in The Washington Post about a recent law introduced in Arizona in September 2012. According to the article, this new law obliges police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the country illegally. The article includes a report by the National Immigration Law Center, in which specialists agree that such policies create an “environment of racial profiling.” The idea that you can have your documents checked just because you may look or sound foreign is really controversial.
We all come from different places and ethnicities, and because of having a dream, people fled away from their home to seek for something to make their life better. Going to a country like United States, is not only a dream but also, an opportunity because many people think that America is the best place to settle in, where work, and education are an easy access. Though this statement is partly true, it is not that easy. Everyone envied because America is a great nation because it's a country of opportunity, but a part of it also is a mixture of feelings that are hard to explain especially if you are immigrant. Every day in your life, you are fighting for something in order to fit in and survive. However, in the process of fitting in or blending to a certain place, people, and culture, it requires a lot of personal choices and a lot of effort as an immigrant. It does not only affect you as a human, but also it draws a lot of attention, conflicts and tension between the government and community. Most immigrants have a harder time to adjust or assimilate even though they speak fluent English and eat American foods. Whenever you see a person of white complexion, people assumed that blue eyes and blonde hair are the characteristics of an American, though these are how we perceived American long time ago, this are still the standards of a few now and doesn’t make a big change at all. The judgement of how a person look physically and how they
