The Impact of Immigration Policies on Communities and the Future of West Michigan “I’m 50% Dutch, 25% German, 15% Polish and a 10% mixture of others I can’t remember.” Does this sound familiar at all? These types of phrases were one of the first things to befuddle my perception of my new found West Michigan friends when our family first moved up to Grand Rapids from a small town in Texas in 2008. It perpetually amazed me as to how so many people had so many different “percents” and a few even impressed me more so by knowing them to decimal place. Many shared their heritage with a swelling pride, and I soon came to learn that this source of pride actually came from West Michigan’s history built upon immigrants which can be traced back all the way to the 18th century. From the huge mass of Dutch immigrants that brought us tulips to the Germans that brought us one of our favorite foods, hot dogs, immigration has had a significant impact in creating our West Michigan culture and industrializing our economy (Nickmanes). With immigration policies today, people from a diverse pool of nationalities such as Hispanic, Asian, Arabic, European and many others continue come to West Michigan and call it home. These immigrants today help develop our community and our economy, in ways that are sometimes overlooked, and leave an overall positive impact just like the many immigrants embedded in many of our genes (“New Americans in Michigan.”).

They work to preserve those traits and customs in order to claim uniqueness and to distinguish themselves from others. “Conversely, the values and behaviors adopted by descendants of immigrants can shift towards those of the majority population by means of school socialization, the media, and friends from the host culture” (Pailhé, 2015).
