The groups that migrate to America have changed throughout history, but this nation has always had immigrants. In the past, it was clear that immigrants were vital to our country to grow our population and workforce. In recent times, however, immigration has become a controversial issue because it has been argued that immigrants are stealing jobs and driving up crime rate. This argument has been especially prevalent with our current presidential administration, which has prompted debates on building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, banning incoming Muslims, creating sanctuary cities, what we should do with the children from DACA, and so on. If nothing else, one thing an immigrant is assured to bring along with them is their unique culture and experiences. Corydon Ireland points out in his article for The Harvard Gazette that the circumstances which often lead to immigration-- poverty, danger, etc-- forces children to mature quickly, and leads to the development of mental toughness and creativity, among other strengths, which makes them valuable people to welcome into the country. He writes that “...these young immigrants bring their own cultural capital, facility in another language, perhaps, or a musical heritage, or a deep-seated admiration for education,” and he brings up former immigrants who found amazing success in America and made important contributions to our country, such as Albert Einstein. In his analysis of the economic impacts of immigrants for the World Economic Forum, Ian Goldin stresses the importance of both skilled and unskilled documented immigrants. He writes of the talent of the skilled workers who come here by informing his audience that over half of Silicon Valley start-ups are run by immigrants, and that “there have been three times as many immigrant Nobel Laureates, National Academy of Science members, and Academy Award film directors than the immigrant share of the population would predict.” He also explains that there has been research done that shows that “immigrants contribute significantly more in taxes than the benefits and services they receive in return.” This means that when we accept immigrants, many of them will be exceedingly accomplished members of society, without costing the country anything, as long as they pay their taxes.
