The groups that migrate to America have changed throughout history, but this nation has always had immigrants. In the past, it was clear that immigrants were vital to our country to grow our population and workforce. In recent times, however, immigration has become a controversial issue because it has been argued that immigrants are stealing jobs and driving up crime rate. This argument has been especially prevalent with our current presidential administration, which has prompted debates on building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, banning incoming Muslims, creating sanctuary cities, what we should do with the children from DACA, and so on. There have been some questions raised about modern immigration, but although some immigrants drain …show more content…
If nothing else, one thing an immigrant is assured to bring along with them is their unique culture and experiences. Corydon Ireland points out in his article for The Harvard Gazette that the circumstances which often lead to immigration-- poverty, danger, etc-- forces children to mature quickly, and leads to the development of mental toughness and creativity, among other strengths, which makes them valuable people to welcome into the country. He writes that “...these young immigrants bring their own cultural capital, facility in another language, perhaps, or a musical heritage, or a deep-seated admiration for education,” and he brings up former immigrants who found amazing success in America and made important contributions to our country, such as Albert Einstein. Diversity strengthens a country because those with experiences different from our own …show more content…
In his analysis of the economic impacts of immigrants for the World Economic Forum, Ian Goldin stresses the importance of both skilled and unskilled documented immigrants. He writes of the talent of the skilled workers who come here by informing his audience that over half of Silicon Valley start-ups are run by immigrants, and that “there have been three times as many immigrant Nobel Laureates, National Academy of Science members, and Academy Award film directors than the immigrant share of the population would predict.” He also explains that there has been research done that shows that “immigrants contribute significantly more in taxes than the benefits and services they receive in return.” This means that when we accept immigrants, many of them will be exceedingly accomplished members of society, without costing the country anything, as long as they pay their taxes. It’s a win-win situation-- immigrants are granted opportunities, and America is granted the results that come from those
According to West, in the last fall would be hard to think Republicans and Democrats working together to fix the immigration system. However, now Democrats and Republicans announced their support of a bipartisan reform solution. Since the Senate is going towards action, House Republicans think the country should be open to immigrants, and the President Barack Obama is giving priority to the immigration reform. Thus, the country seems to be close to solving this important issue. Even there are still many steps to overcome; there were some changes in the politics of immigration reform in the past few months for instance in 2004, Romney got only 27 % of Hispanic Vote, down from Bush's 44 %. The poor performance of Republican Mitt Romney in the
There are an estimated 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the United States. With current far leaning politics gaining popularity and a republican controlled government the popularity of anti-immigration policies is at an all-time high. I believe amnesty is the only moral and logical solution to illegal immigration.
“With Asian and African undocumented communities comprising nearly 20 percent of the undocumented population” (Cho). Many people think that deporting Immigrants would make the United States a better place. Deporting Immigrants out of the United States would not only cost a lot of money, it would also cause a lot of casualties like reducing the population. People say that Immigrants are bad for the economy because they could only bring trouble to the United States. In reality Immigrants don’t do anything but working hard to provide food for their family and themselves. Many Immigrants are getting deported each day by the government. Imagine how our lives would be without a single Immigrant someday. We would not live without Immigrants because
There has been a lot of controversy on the issue of immigration lately, and probably will continue in the future. In this video, a young boy named Gaspar is struggling, but he is passionate about pushing forward for him to have a better life. He goes to school, and then proceeds to work an eight hour shift, leaving barely enough time to get any sleep. In my opinion, most Americans are not willing to put in that much effort in their life. America does provide assistance, which can be controversial; whereas, immigrants are willing to work because absolutely have to, for very little amounts. Furthermore, Americans basically get things handed to them, so how is it fair to not let someone willing to work, work? The Unites States is a privileged
Why do people dislike immigration and why do immigrants love it? Our country is very divided about his topic, some people agree with immigration and others don't. In this essay, we will talk about these two opinions and how both of these people affect each other. Altogether we will be discussing both of these peoples dreams and hopes.
Immigration has been a “hot button” issue since the founding of our country. We are a nation made up of immigrants, and yet the restriction of the very phenomena that created the United States is still debated. Especially since 9/11, immigration has been closely linked to terrorism; today the sealing of our borders is a “hot button” issue among presidential candidates. I would argue that when Urea states that immigration is a “white phenomena” he means to say that immigrating whites are accepted while other races or ethnicities are not. We see a similar situation today with religion and/or ethnicity tied to terrorism in the American scope, but refusal to label white acts of terror as the same.
All of us, every single person had to come from somewhere. So if that's the case, then how can we make immigrants today feel safe and welcomed. An immigrant should feel ok to eat the foods they used to eat in their country. Most of the time they don't.In just 15 years a man or woman can become obese just because they want to fit in.

The President’s Travel ban has been criticized even before inception for how well it actually protects national security interests and civil liberties. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, whenever the president finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may…suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate1. President Trump and his advisors have said time and again that the countries listed on the travel ban, which include, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, were identified by the previous administration
When people immigrate to the United States they are looking for an opportunity to use their potential that their home country may not be able to offer. A few main reasons for coming to the states is for an education, in hopes to find a good job, or to even start their own business. Immigration is a sticky topic in politics for obvious reasons like the economy and education but even more so in a state like Florida where it is surrounded by countries like Cuba, Columbia, and Haiti. According to Maptheimpact.org just over 19 percent of Florida’s population are immigrants and it is one of the fastest populating state for immigrants. When people see these kinds of growing numbers, it can put some natural born citizens in a panic.
”Another way of indicating the importance of immigration to America is to point out that every American who ever lived, with the exception of one group, was an immigrant himself or a descendent of immigrants,”(Kennedy, 2). The United States is a nation of immigrants. There are, however, many Americans who are not accepting of the fact that immigrants were the reason why this country is able to have a population, economy and democracy. To ignore immigrants, is to ignore our history and how America is the way it is now. The immigrant culture of America is relevant to not only every individual US citizen, but also every person living across seas.
It seems as soon as Americans forget their own immigrant origins they start to feel that immigrants are bad for this country. From the Irish coming to escape the potato famine, to the Chinese coming in from the west to find work, and now Mexicans and Central Americans coming to the United States for a better life, many people have felt immigrants would take jobs from hard working U.S. citizens, but this is not true. America needs immigrant workers. Immigration benefits America because immigrants work hard, do the jobs many Americans do not want to do, and they add to the melting pot that is American culture.
Think of all the different food choices we have in the United States, we are all able to go eat Chinese, French, Italian food, mostly anything, because people from those countries immigrated to the US and they brought their cuisine and culture with them. Other places in the world don’t have the access that US residents do to all this variety of food. For them to get, let’s say, Japanese food, there probably wouldn’t be a Japanese restaurant right across the street like there is for people in the United States. However, food isn’t the only thing that immigrants have contributed to the society; they have also shared some very valuable and important knowledge with us.
My darling mother has raised me with politics, and always makes sure I’m kept up to date with current matters. Out of many controversies I’ve always been interested in immigration. All of our ancestors have came to our country, unless your ancestry is from a native American tribe, from another country. People say that since we came here as immigrants we should give others the same opportunity, which I have no comment on, but I believe that there are multiple problems that we have that involves immigration. The two largest problems have to do with amnesty and what illegal immigration is actually doing to our country. People believe that the borders are one of the largest problems facing our country but are they really?
Some people wants to live in United States for money to feed their families. So they come to the states illegally. According to merriam-webster.com immigration means “ A person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence.” Parents want children to live a better life. But since Donald Trump is the new president he want to sent all the illegal immigrants, who seek a better life, to the place they were born. Donald Trump thinks we are the ones who do bad stuff and thinks we are a bad influence. According to Donald Trump on ontheissues.org he said , “I want to build the wall. We have some bad hombres here, and we're going to get them out.” But no, he doesn’t even have a clue why we are here. And the reason we are here
