Editorial: ‘Immigration’ in a land that was never theirs
By: Lauryn Gibbs
Immigration is the double edged sword. Ask Donald Trump, and he’ll claim that immigrants are stealing jobs. Ask an immigrant, and they’ll say they came to America for a brighter future.
In the year 2014, 11.4 million immigrants were counted in the United States. Some people may view this as a threat, but immigrants take lower paying jobs, work longer hours and are often exploited.
Some people may say, “Immigrants don’t pay taxes!” Incorrect, every time an immigrant, legal or illegal, fills up their gas tank, buys a shirt or rent an apartment, they pay taxes. Their income may not be taxed, but the average illegal immigrant makes $24,000 a year.
Another person may say, “Immigrants bring gangs!” False. Ciudad Juárez, also commonly known as the ‘murder capital of the world’, is a prime example of why immigration exists, to escape. Juárez is known for slums, cheap labor, corrupt officials and vicious drug lords. People leave Juárez

Going to Greece, Germany, or Turley is not a summer vacation for them. Syrian refugees simply have no other place to go, and anywhere is better that where they came from.
Another argument against immigration, is the derogatory term, ‘anchor babies.’ A so called ‘anchor baby’, is a child that was born in the United States, but has foreign born parents, allowing the parent to stay in the U.S. However, immigration judges still deport foreign born parents. In 2013, approximately 72,410 foreign born parents with children born on US soil were deported. The child can petition for their parents to join them in the US after the child turns 21, but the process is long and difficult.
So, even after all this, why is ‘immigration’ such a big deal? In the 1990’s, half of all workers, on the low and high end of the skill set spectrum, were foreign born. Immigrants fill in jobs in key areas, start their own business and help the
In The Crucible Abigail actions shows that she is selfish because, In the first act when they were about to get caught for doing witchcraft ,she got the other girl to blame others for witchcraft. It shows abigail is only for herself because she really didn’t care if other gets hanged . She only cared about her being with john and making everyone else pay for it because he doesn't want her. In act two Abigail seen mary making a rag doll and stuck a needle for safe keeping so she seen it as her way to get Elizabeth out the picture and that was selfish of her. Abigail also showed villainous because she used all wicked ways to get people killed but at the end she was hurt because the men she wanted was hanged for something she did and she could
Approximately, at 1930hrs, August 13, 2017, during a baseball game event the Brandon stadium in Brandon, Florida was under attack, an active shooter entered the premises, causing chaos and casualties. The active shooter has no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Personnel must be aware of their surroundings and of any possible dangers. Notes of the nearest exits should also be taken. A contact team of four officers should be assembled, no officer should respond on their own; however, if a full contact team cannot be assembled quickly, the use of fewer officers will be permitted in order to respond to the incident in a timely manner.
There was a record number of unaccompanied child migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border the summer of 2014. These young people hoped to flee from violence, and poverty affecting their countries. This wave of migrants garnered a lot of attention due to the fact that in the first half of 2014, more than 57,000 children arrived in the U.S. This was more than twice the number of arrivals as the ones that made it to the U.S.-Mexico border in all of the fiscal year of 2013.
Globally, the United States has been known as "a nation of immigrants" almost from its inception. Beginning in the 1600s with English Puritans and continuing today, America is a melting pot of culture and ethnicity. In fact, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, immigration was the major source of U.S. population growth. Looking over our 200+ years we find that to clearly be true, with approximately 1 million immigrants coming to America during the 17th and 18th century. Almost 3 million arrived during the 1860s, and another 3 million in the 1870s. In the next four decades, the number of immigrants rose to over 25 million people, most from various European nations, most arriving in New York or one of the Eastern seaports (Damon, 1981). Despite the politicization, as of 2006, the United States actually was the number one country globally to accept legal immigrants into the country, with a current immigrant population of almost 40 million (Terrazas and Batalova, 2009). In fact, the peak of immigration was 1907, when over 1.2 million Europeans entered the country beginning a push towards legislation limiting immigration in the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1924 and the 1921 Congressional Quota Act. These immigrants came for two sociological reasons: the push factor (wars, famine, persecution and overpopulation) and the pull factors (jobs and the promise of freedom). Most came by ship, and a passage often cost the equivalent of an entire life's savings causing many
According to a study by the Migration Policy Institute, approximately 41.3 million immigrants were living in the United States in 2013, an all-time high for a nation historically built on immigration. Immigrants accounted for 13 percent of the total 316 million U.S. residents and adding the U.S.-born children of immigrants means that approximately 80 million people, or one-quarter of the overall U.S. population, is either of the first or second generation (Zong, Batalova).
There are millions of immigrants who live in the United States illegally who become citizens by first becoming lawful permanent residents of the United States and after five years, in most cases, applying for naturalization and be granted US citizenship. In many cases, when undocumented immigrants enter the US, they bring their families with them. When parents are discovered by immigration authorities and deported, this can create a family tragedy if the children are left behind.
Immigration has been a burning issue lately, particularly after Donald Trump’s immigration ban in the United States of America. It has been a topic that families discuss every morning with breakfast. Despite many concerns related to immigration, it has several positive benefits that mostly outweighs the negativity. People bizarrely argue when it comes to immigration, but these arguments are primarily based on facts and ideas that are outdated or inconsistent and blindfold the positive aspect related to immigration. Many immigrants in the United States are good workers who don't depend upon any public welfare and mostly help in the overall development of the economy. As a country made by immigrants, we must not forget the fact that immigrants have helped to build cities and create a path of development form Google to iPhones (Gray & Furman, 2012). These facts are secluded, and some related arguments with different content have been repeated for years and continue. Immigrants have a lot to give the United States rather than to take, especially when it comes to economic terms.
“According to estimates from the 2013 ACS, the U.S. immigrant population stood at more than 41.3 million, or 13 percent, of the total U.S. population of 316.1 million. Between 2012 and 2013, the foreign-born population increased by about 523,000, or 1.3 percent. U.S. immigrants and their U.S.-born children now number approximately 80 million persons, or one-quarter of the overall U.S. population.”People for in other countries that come to America are known as immigrants. They can be categorized as illegal or legal immigrants. Recently there has been a case (Texas v. United States) which corresponds with immigration in the United States of America. Now, it is seen as inhumane to break up families in the United sates, It’s illegal for states to sue the U.S., and the general public does not need time to react to the new program in motion.
One of the worst effects of deportation of parents and separation from their families is that many children are sent to foster care for long periods and are put up for adoption. However, these children are subject to not being able to see their ever again, meaning they are permanently separated from their parents. (p 408) After parental deportation, the intersection of child welfare and immigration enforcement is treacherous from all directions, even though, detention and deportation separates families on the front end, child welfare lacks on the policy to facilitate the reunification of children with their parents in other countries. (Wessler, p.414) The comparison of the articles is that undocumented people goes through so much to come to the United States, and it’s sad the government deports these parents back across the country causing their children to never see them
Immigrants come to America chasing hopes and dreams of someday having a life of wealth. The United States has this imagine that everything will be better and all your problems will be solved. However, in the last century we’ve had a raise of Illegal Immigrants in the country.
For example in paragraph 2 of the article “Unskilled Workers Lose Out to Immigrants,” the author states ”...as of November [2014], there were 1.5 million fewer native-born Americans working than in November 2007, while 2 million immigrants (legal and illegal) were working….” this shows that more illegal immigrants were working than Americans. Some people believe that this reason is because illegal immigrants take the unwanted jobs. Although they take those jobs they still take jobs that our people need to survive. Therefore allowing illegal immigrants to stay is hurting our own people
Immigration has always and will always play an important role in America’s history, along with the United States having the most open immigration policy in the world to this date. American history began with flocks of immigrants competing for lands to start a life, bringing over their vast traditions and values. Some brought nothing but determination. It’s disgusting to see our congress and lawmakers make these higher-end laws to keep foreigners out, yet our country is built off immigrants. Since the 19th century, America has been the leading destination unlike no other for immigrants to reside. No other country has such a wide range of races and population like America. Diversity is indeed, what makes this country so unique. America has always
Every year hundreds of thousands legal illegal immigrants flock to America. They hope to start a new life or escape civil wars in their countries. There are approximately 12.5 million illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. This number has grown significantly in the past years. This puts a major strain on the economy costing taxpayers three billion dollars each year. Immigrants are also taking the jobs from
No matter how strict the United States gets with here immigration policies, immigrants find a way in. Today there are over 42.4 million immigrants living in the U.S., 11.9 of which are undocumented (Soylu, Buchanan). Known for being the land of opportunity, the United States often sounds like the ideal location for migration when searching for a new life, with a new job. In fact, the U.S. was founded by colonist who migrated from Europe to the Americas (Dudek). However, nowadays, American is no longer so much of a "nation of immigrants", but a nation against immigrants. Generations down the line, people forget that everyone's family started out with one immigrant. This leads to inequity between citizens and immigrants, especially in the workplace.
